When it comes to decoys: our field is full of HIGDON, MOJO. You want a good hunt? Buy good tools. Have a great season! Come On, “Getcha Some!!” 2

FOUR GENERATIONS Tim Grounds Bill Grounds John S. Moore, my grandpa, was the firstJohn S. Moore to take me goose hunting when I was 5. Hunter Grounds “POP” Pop was all in for a good time, especially when it came to pestering the little ones. He had me in the field one day and said, “Go pick up that goose.” I did not know a wounded goose is nothing to mess with.I was just a little guy and that old goose with a broken wing got me down, and I can still remember how POP laughed.Wildfowl Magazine printed that story which you can read a copy of on page 66. From that day on, I knew I wouldlearn to get them in close enough to kill. Just another lesson learned, taught by the best. My dad Bill used to carryme on his shoulders into the bottoms to hunt ducks, and he was my dog when we hunted rabbits. Since he was two,my son Hunter has been my best huntin’ buddy. He has made me very proud for many reasons, but most of all forthe fact he knows how to treat people. I am a blessed man. 3

“Hunting was always my passion, the goose calls were a sideline, sorta came with the package.” TimTim Grounds is an entrepreneur, designer, teacher, caller, hunter, fisherman, friend, father, son, brother, businessman. This year, 2015, marks his 40th yearin the goose call business. Tim earned a reputationof being a man of his word and always willing toshare his knowledge. While hunting on the CrabOrchard Wildlife Refuge in the early 70s, his callingwas so good they asked him to be a guide just for thetips. Some guys were apprehensive about havingsomeone so young in the pit with them and the gamewarden would say, “Just give him a chance.” Well, very soon they all began asking for the ‘kid’ becausehe could set the geese down right in front of them.He and his son, Hunter, have set a high bar in theirfield, honest, hardworking, loyal to a fault. Thisfather/son duo has gained much and has givenmuch back to their sport.

WORLD HISTORYEaston, MD WORLD 2007World Goose 2005 World Goose 2005World Goose 2003 Jr. World Goose2003 Tim won the WORLDSean Mann congratulates Hunter inin 2003 and 2005 1988 1992 1994 6

From this at age 2 To this And on to his 3rd WORLD win at age 20Hunter Grounds has a phenomenal history: He has been winning gooseand duck calling contests since age 7. Yes, he has had the best teacher nearhim daily, but he had a drive and love of the sport that pushed him to win. After winning locals and nationals, he went to Easton, MD in 2000 (age 13),and won the World Jr. Goose . He went to Stuttgart the following week andwon the World Jr. Duck. Hunter is the only person to hold both theseWorld titles in the same year. In 2001 he won the World Intermediate Duckin Stuttgart. Going back to Easton in 2003, he won the WORLD SENIORGOOSE, the WORLD JR GOOSE, and the JR MASON-DIXON DUCK,all three on the same night. The record of the three in one night may havebeen a good feat, but he was the youngest at 16 to ever win the SR WORLDGOOSE, making it all the sweeter. To cap off those wins in Easton in 2003,he took the World Intermediate Duck (for a second time) the followingweek in Stuttgart. Hunter was retired from the World Senior Goose afterhis wins in 2005 and 2007. 7

“ LEGENDS OF THE OUTDOORS HALL OF FAME”Tim was inducted into the \"Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame” October 9, 2004, in Nashville, TN. The 'Hall of Fame' wasestablished to recognize men and women that have set guidelines for their sport. Master of Ceremonies and coordinator of the eventwas Garry Mason. Hunter Grounds was presented the Hall's first \"Youth Legacy Award\" for his many accomplishments at such an earlyage. Very emotional night for the Grounds family. 8

At age five I shot my first goose, and I was hooked. I began goose callingin one of the world’s most dense populations of geese for that time, CrabOrchard Wildlife Refuge. By sixteen I was guiding professionally andconstantly improving my skills on the Olt A-50. Met Abe Lewis out atCrab and he took a likin’ to me and offered to show me how to make alittle extra money by modifying that Olt A-50. For several years I boughtparts from Jim Olt and made my own calls. When I put together ateaching cassette, Jim did not receive that well; he thought it gave up toomuch information, and he discouraged me from putting it on themarket. I thought it should be available to help my customers learn toblow the flute, so I went ahead and sold the tape with my modified OLTcalls. In 1988, on the advice of my dad, I drove to Evansville, IN, andcontracted to have the Variable Tone Honker and the Guides Bestmolded. Good friends, Keith and Charlie Hess, developers of the short-reed calling system, taught me how to modify my best-selling flute call, the Guides Best , into the Half Breed. The real ‘short reed craze’ wasborn ten years before other call makers even had a call on the market. The short-reed goose calling system is responsible for the Illinois Staterecord for geese killed. Burns Hunting Club on the south side of CrabOrchard Refuge took an incredible 2724 geese in that 93/94 season. Iassume that Illinois record still stands. ~ Tim 9

“VARIABLE TONE HONKER”™ This is the oldest Grounds flute call still on the market. Thousands of these have been sold. It is so versatile and easy to operate. You can easily change your tone by removing the bell making the call into the Guides Best, so you are really getting two calls for the price of one. This call takes very little air and is very mellow. Anyone can cluck and moan on it. Remember, you must blow the air through a flute call. On the short reed system, you need to ‘pop’ the air into the call. ABS green, $35 Made in the USA. 10

“GUIDES BEST” Goose CallThis old flute call won the WORLD in 1988 and has helped kill more geese than I can count. It is the most reliabletool in my arsenal. It is old fashioned and easy to blow. All my early wins came with this old flute call. It is, andalways has been, made in the USA. “Half Breeds”™After winning the Nationals at the Executive Inn, Paducah, KY, in 1986 and 1987 on the modified A-50, Keith Hess approached me and said,“You have a lot more in that call than you realize, let's get together and let me show you some ideas” (words to that effect). Over a two yearperiod, Keith would come to Johnston City and work with me on developing a new sound. I had not met Charlie at this time. Keith was thecaller, and Charlie was the master machinist. In the meantime (1988), I had the Guides Best molded because the demand for my calls was sogreat I could no longer manage to do all the hand work it took to modify the OLT. The Half Breed name came about because we took half theHess call and half the Guides Best, thus “Half Breed” was on the market. Keith did not want any money for all of his help. His only requestwas that I blow the Half Breed in contests for the next two years. How do you ever repay such friendship? I give the Hess family all thecredit for the short reed success. “PRO SUPER MAGS”™ Tim Grounds ‘Pro Super Mag’ is another success story. It has the same profile of the Super Mag but with a lengthened, more open insert. This insert enables the caller to create less back pressure. It comes equipped with the innovative drop gut system and also a shaved reed. In 2003, 2005, and 2007, Hunter Grounds won the WORLD Goose Calling Title using this versatile ‘PRO Super Mag.’ When the Triple Crown guts became available, Hunter added those to his stage call. This call has won contests all across the states, from the World, World Open, Bass Pro, Sportsman’s, International, Liv for a Cure; it is Hunter’s stage call of choice. It has a great, quick reed response. It will go from the deepest guttural laydowns to the most powerful triple clucks. Hand tuned by Tim or Chart/pearl Hunter. KELLEY POWERSKelley Powers has little left to prove in thewaterfowl world. He has won the ‘World GooseCalling Championship’™ and the ‘World GooseChampion of Champions’™ forcing him to retirefrom this pinnacle calling event. In Jan. of 2003,he won the International, followed by theMasters, and then the World Open.Collectively winning all these major contests, inone year, is a feat that has never been achievedby any other individual. Kelley helped designthe Triple Crown Worn-in™ gut system. Hetook his guts out of a Super Mag he had beenblowing for years and together we ‘tweaked’them until we thought they were better thanany ever on the market. They went back andforth to be reworked many times before Kelley,Hunter, and I would approve the sound. Whenwe were satisfied, the guts were absolutelyawesome and could give a caller everything heneeded to get the best sound out of a goose call,I had them molded. Kelley and his brothers, operate FINAL FLIGHT OUTFITTERS in UnionCity, TN, and he works for Higdon Decoys. Thisyoung man is an excellent family man, businessman, and all around good person. Iappreciate his representing me for so manyyears. The Triple Crown™ goose call was madein Kelley’s honor. 24

“TRIPLE CROWN”™BEMaple Chartreuse M O pearl TN Crush Chart/blk Blk Cherry Pearl/chart Gold Nugget Tim Grounds ‘Triple Crown’ goose call houses the guts duplicated from those in Kelley Power's winning Super Mag, his secret to success. Kelley is the only person to have won the 'TRIPLE CROWN' of goose calling. Being so proud of him, I felt it only fitting to create a call bearing his name. The Triple Crown call is the first to come with the \"Original\" worn-in Triple Crown gut system which produces the fullest, most powerful top end to the deepest low end guttural honks. Remember, when putting a Tim Grounds Triple Crown in your hands, you can be first on stage, or first in the field! MADE IN USA $200 Flat black BacotePearl and black Electric Blue 25

Butch and Hunter in the fieldAside from the fact that ButchRichenback was the best duckcaller/teacher ever, he was asweet, kind man. As I sat in hisfuneral service this year (2015),I was reminded of thetremendous love he had for thekids and how he was so willingto share his knowledge; not aselfish bone in his body. Oh,how he will be missed! Butchmade Hunter the duck caller heis today. After working with him,Butch would say, “Now put it inyour pocket and go out thereand win.” It was because of histraining that Hunter won oneWORLD JR Duck and twoWORLD Intermediate Duckcontests. ROBBIE IVERSON $200 This very talented young man, Robbie Iverson from Ottawa, IL, has won the SENIOR WORLD Goose Calling contest in Easton, MD three times: 2009, 2012, 2014. Hunter and I are so very proud of him and grateful for the fact he chose to use our call. Robbie has captured many, many titles in addition to the WORLD. I have designed this call in his honor, “Robbie’s Secret”, aka, “R I Secret.” It comes in Electric Blue with a pearl insert or the solid Electric Blue. This call will do it all, folks That is not the end of the story: Robbie went back to Easton in 2015 and won the Champion of Champions. To be retired one year and win the C of C the very next, highly unlikely. Because the Champion of Champions comes around only every five years, that record will probably never be broken.
