HAPPY MONTH - GAMES A game is a structured form of play. Usually, games are for entertainment and fun but sometimes an educational tool. There are 4 main components of a game - goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. In few of the breakout sessions we played games like queen of Sheba, tombola, etc. In the queen of Sheba, one person chooses a topic and others to ask questions about the topic to figure out the term the former is thinking about in the form of yes or no questions. The person who identifies the word will be the next queen of Sheba. There is also another game where the teacher asks the students to find a few objects, whoever finds the object first is the winner. The games conducted were very fun and refreshed our minds. KRISTAM ARYAN BRAZIL, GRADE V SANSKRIT LANGUAGE Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages. COMMUNICATION IS POWER – SPEAKER@SO Those who have mastered it’s effective use, can change their own experience of the world and the world’s experience of them. Speaker@SO helps the acorns of Silver Oaks to master out communication skills. Let me walk you through Speaker@SO and its advantages. A general or subject related topic will be given to speak in 2 to 3 minutes every week. We will be given some pointers to build our speech. Each student will participate effectively to gain confidence and to come out of stage fear. We will be judged based on the criteria - topic relevance, pronunciation, voice modulation, audibility, body language and confidence. Speaker@SO not only improves our speaking skills, but it also improves our presentation skills, thinking skills and listening skills. We usually present our speech in our classroom one after the other. So, while our peers give their speech, we listen carefully, we respect and get to know multiple perspectives. We prepare our speech with the help of the pointers given and present our speech with proper introduction, main content, and a conclusion. Speaker@SO builds good communication skills which includes (listening, friendliness, open mindedness, confidence, and gestures) at a very young age. We also gain the ability to appreciate other’s thoughts with open mindedness. In the month of November 2020 (Happy Month) the topic for Speaker@SO was “Our favorite animal or plant”, in which each of us has chosen a different animal and plant and spoken about its specialty, origin and few facts about it. From this we gained more knowledge apart from our academics. I strongly believe that “Good communication will help in getting - better response, more productivity, strong decision making, quick in problem solving, consistency in the workflow and better control”. HINDI IS THE REPRESENTATION OF INDIA Hindi language is just like the backbone of India, it is said to be the 2nd most spoken language, we the acorns of silver oaks learn many languages like Spanish, French, Telugu, Sanskrit, and last but not least Hindi. We acorns learn Hindi, firstly to enhance our speaking skills and secondly to show gratitude and respect towards our nation. To make learning more interesting our Hindi teachers, make us do some activities to learn faster and understand the concept. One of the activities was Hindi word hunt, where you were given a few hard words and you had to find them in the grid. Through these activities we also enhanced our skills, and we were not only given activities for learning but also were given activities to enjoy ‘Happy Month’. During such a wonderful time in happy month, we all dance, sing, dress up like some characters….are Hindi teachers also did some contribution in making happy month even more exhilarating. In every breakout session we used to wait for the Hindi activities, the activities were mostly puzzles and riddles. Though all the puzzles and riddles were in Hindi we still enjoyed solving them. We had to do a lot of brainstorming to solve those riddles and puzzles. We too played name, place, animal, and thing, and that was our favorite activity. We spent quality time with our Hindi teachers, and we thank them for keeping up our enthusiasm and making every breakout session great. We all love learning Hindi. Aradhya Cuba, Grade V FRENCH LANGUAGE I learn the French interactively along with my friends and teacher, French is interesting because there is much to explore in it and it is a new learning. This new learning will benefit us in the future in many ways. I feel the French language is wonderful, but a little hard to remember the grammar but all the hard work is worth it in the end. I want to express that .........French is one of the 6500 languages in the world. It has its own beauty of the language, and I appreciate it very much because I am learning French, I am daily exploring new grammar, words, sentences, and it makes me feel like an inquirer! “Learn Telugu Love Telugu” Telugu has its own script and is among the ancient native languages of India with history of more than 1500 years old. Telugu is considered as “Italian of the east” as each Telugu word ends with vowels, making it a beautiful poetic language. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort. Activities help students to have a better learning environment in the class. Activities would also help students to sustain the effort they have put in learning the language. They provide practice to the language in various skills - Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading . They would also improve the creative and thinking skills of students. In this academic year we had many activities to make our learning, Telugu, more interesting. Here are some such activities : Picture Stories: We were asked to interpret a story based on a picture sequence. Creative writing helps students in the development and presentation of thoughts in a structured way. It can develop students’ confidence in writing and improve students’ vocabulary, thoughts and ideas. Drama and Role-play: We did a skit virtually based on the story book “పిల్వల ాడు డప్పు “ and showcased our acting talent. Drama provides an useful and enjoyable medium to discover language. Acorns could express themselves in a variety of ways and each one of us enjoyed doing this activity. Draw a Story: We were asked to create a Picture Story based on the lesson “నాన్న బళ్ళో చేరడం “from the model book. Drawing a story helps students to practice storytelling and gain confidence in the depth and quality of their ideas. Neethi Padyalu ( నీతి పద్యా లు ) : We have recited some beautiful moral poems along with its meaning in Telugu. Moral Stories:
We learnt morals from our lessons like “చేతనైన్ విద్ా “and “అవును నిజం “. Moral stories are the best way to teach students moral values and life lessons. It also inculcates good manners, social behavior, and respect for elders. Transdisciplinary Language (Telugu) : We made connections to different Transdisciplinary themes through Telugu language. We have explored aspects of civilizations and the components of music by integrating with Telugu Language. CHARACTER FIRST AND COMPETENCE NEXT – A TALK BY PRINCIPAL MS.SEETHA MURTY Principal's speech - take away - character first and competence next-: The first step into our schoolhouse is Character First and Competence Next and we implement it by using inside out approach. The Inside Out approach can be explained as, how we control our inner emotions, & thoughts, and how we are going to express it through actions in the out approach. To build character and competence, learner profile acts as a backbone. The learner profile has different attributes which are Inquirer, knowledgeable, open-minded, thinker, communicator, principled, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. For example, when I am being principled, I am naturally developing character and also competence. Competence can help us finish the finish line, but it always will not help us cross the line, again and again, that's the reason we should build both character first and competence next. RAM ARYAN AUSTRIA, GRADE VI READING FOR FLUENCY A book is a man’s best friend. Reading is very important for us as it expands our mind and helps us evaluate ideas and creativity. It also increases our vocabulary and comprehension skills. Our school helps us in reading by having “reading for fluency” practices in our classes. We get our novels, and our teacher conducts it. We improve in reading day by day with this engagement. It not only develops our reading skills but also our knowledge on a particular topic. Our teachers have a criterion -volume, clarity, fluency, expression, and posture which determines our reading ability. Not only English but we have reading in language, social and many more subjects. Our school has this culture called “culture to read” where it says, we learn to read and read to learn. It also boosts our fluency levels. We use books, newspapers, articles, or any reading material to extend our reading skills. Our school strongly believes that reading is the only treasure which accompanies its owner everywhere and it is right. Our aim is to achieve good fluency in our reading! RUTWIKA DENMARK, GRADE VI
PROCESS OF PYP EXHIBITION First, we had an orientation with our head wing Shobha mam and came to know about the PYP Exhibition. Then we had chosen the different global issues to inquire about and were divided into groups. We have then started inquiring into the global issues and have chosen 2 different art forms to present our global issue as the theme is How we Express Ourselves. After we choose the art forms, we have integrated different Languages and connected them to the Global issues and even The 17 sustainable development goals. We have framed our lines of Inquiries and inquired. These lines of inquiry contain all our research work on our issue. Then we have connected the 17 sustainable development goals to our global issue. We have acquired different skills and also gained the learner profile while we are inquiring. Then we made a slideshow on our learning throughout the PYP Journey and Finally explained it to our parents and teachers. MATH MARATHON LEVEL 3 Just last year we started this wonderful thing called math marathon. It is a series of 4 levels. Each level gets more and more trickier and less time is given. It helps us improve our logical thinking as the math marathon is not only about math but also about logical solving. There are different types of sums in which, some questions can help us in real life and some questions help us in math and to improve our brain. Most of the sums are logical sums. People who got selected in the 1st marathon and people good in human calculators get selected to the 2nd round and from the second round we get selected to the 3rd round. ARJUN BELGIUM, GRADE VI CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS Christmas is a special day. It is celebrated worldwide as a festival but mostly celebrated by Christians. Well other people wanted to join in too and there was nothing wrong with it. So there started a tradition of celebrating the 25th of December as Christmas day. If Christian or not, its a happy day for everyone as its a festival for everyone. So in our school we had prize changes, fun activities and many more before this pandemic arose. Now we are all in front of devices and seeing our friends and teachers virtually instead of physically which was a little bit less exciting. But we managed to scrape off good knowledge like this too through online classes. This academic year (2020-21) we needed to attend classes online on devices like laptops, phones, iPad etc. This action was taken due to the ongoing pandemic of covid-19. This Christmas we had a pleasantly vacation and many fun online activities. We have made badges for our friends. Well almost. We made them in happy month but it bought us a feeling that it was for Christmas. We had kahoots which made the day fun but also gave us knowledge. Well if we keep all of this aside we had a very fun and pleasantly Christmas. YASHASVI PORTUGAL, GRADE VI
