HAPPY MONTH - DANCE CLASS Dancing is the joy of movement and the heart of life. As we know this year turned upside – down, we still managed ourselves with new entertainment and activities. Firstly, I would like to thank my teachers for making this year awesome. It was interesting when school started naming the months like - July Project, August Rising, October Mantras and November is called Happy month. In this Happy month we did many activities like dancing, drawing, crafts and many more. Let us know about dance in the happy month. We had many dance activities during the happy month (November). Every day in the breakout session we had one activity. But one day when we heard that the activity was dance, the girls were excited. But whereas the boys were feeling sad as they did not like dancing. But the boys also had a good opportunity to present the music. Soon all the boys lined up raising their hands to present. But even some boys liked to dance so they got an extra opportunity to present and dance. Finally, I would like to say that dancing is fun. We loved it and dancing is a good exercise. GEETANSH KARTIKEYA ARGENTINA, GRADE V HUMAN CALCULATOR COMPETITION Human calculator is a competition judging our speed and accuracy. It started late this academic year because of the pandemic. We were quite happy when it started again in the month of November. It was conducted either through kahoot or google forms. We had winners every week. HAPPY MONTH - GAMES A game is a structured form of play. Usually, games are for entertainment and fun but sometimes an educational tool. There are 4 main components of a game - goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. In few of the breakout sessions we played games like queen of Sheba, tombola, etc. In the queen of Sheba, one person chooses a topic and others to ask questions about the topic to figure out the term the former is thinking about in the form of yes or no questions. The person who identifies the word will be the next queen of Sheba. There is also another game where the teacher asks the students to find a few objects, whoever finds the object first is the winner. The games conducted were very fun and refreshed our minds. KRISTAM ARYAN BRAZIL, GRADE V SANSKRIT LANGUAGE Sanskrit is the mother of all Indian languages. COMMUNICATION IS POWER – SPEAKER@SO Those who have mastered its effective use, can change their own experience of the world and the world’s experience of them. Speaker@SO helps the acorns of Silver Oaks to master out communication skills. Let me walk you through Speaker@SO and its advantages. A general or subject related topic will be given to speak in 2 to 3 minutes every week. We will be given some pointers to build our speech. Each student will participate effectively to gain confidence and to come out of stage fear. We will be judged based on the criteria - topic relevance, pronunciation, voice modulation, audibility, body language and confidence. Speaker@SO not only improves our speaking skills, but it also improves our presentation skills, thinking skills and listening skills. We usually present our speech in our classroom one after the other. So, while our peers give their speech, we listen carefully, we respect and get to know multiple perspectives. We prepare our speech with the help of the pointers given and present our speech with proper introduction, main content, and a conclusion. Speaker@SO builds good communication skills which includes (listening, friendliness, open mindedness, confidence, and gestures) at a very young age. We also gain the ability to appreciate other’s thoughts with open mindedness. In the month of November 2020 (Happy Month) the topic for Speaker@SO was “Our favorite animal or plant”, in which each of us has chosen a different animal and plant and spoken about its specialty, origin and few facts about it. From this we gained more knowledge apart from our academics. I strongly believe that “Good communication will help in getting - better response, more productivity, strong decision making, quick in problem solving, consistency in the workflow and better control”. SAANVI COSTA RICA, GRADE V
HINDI IS THE REPRESENTATION OF INDIA Hindi language is just like the backbone of India, it is said to be the 2nd most spoken language, we the acorns of silver oaks learn many languages like Spanish, French, Telugu, Sanskrit, and finally Hindi. We acorns learn Hindi, firstly to enhance our speaking skills and secondly to show gratitude and respect towards our nation. To make learning more interesting our Hindi teachers, make us do some activities to learn faster and understand the concept. One of the activities was Hindi word hunt, where we were given a few hard words and you had to find them in the grid. Through these activities we also enhanced our skills, and we were not only given activities for learning but also were given activities to enjoy ‘Happy Month’. During such a wonderful time in happy month, we all dance, sing, dress up like some characters…. our Hindi teachers also did some contribution in making happy month even more exhilarating. In every breakout session we used to wait for the Hindi activities, the activities were mostly puzzles and riddles. Though all the puzzles and riddles were in Hindi we still enjoyed solving them. We had to do a lot of brainstorming to solve those riddles and puzzles. We too played name, place, animal, and thing, and that was our favorite activity. We spent quality time with our Hindi teachers, and we thank them for keeping up our enthusiasm and making every breakout session great. We all love learning Hindi. ARADHYA CUBA, GRADE V FRENCH LANGUAGE We learn the French interactively along with my friends and teacher, French is interesting because there is much to explore in it, and it is a new learning. This new learning will benefit us in the future in many ways. I feel the French language is wonderful, but a little hard to remember the grammar but all the hard work is worth it in the end. I want to express that .........French is one of the 6500 languages in the world. It has its own beauty of the language, and I appreciate it very much because we are all learning French, we are daily exploring new grammar, words, sentences, and it makes us feel like good inquirers! RAM ARYAN AUSTRIA, GRADE VI
“LEARN TELUGU LOVE TELUGU” Telugu has its own script and is among the ancient native languages of India with history of more than 1500 years old. Telugu is considered as “Italian of the east” as each Telugu word ends with vowels, making it a beautiful poetic language. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort. Activities help students to have a better learning environment in the class. Activities would also help students to sustain the effort they have put in learning the language. They provide practice to the language in various skills - Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading. They would also improve the creative and thinking skills of students. In this academic year we had many activities to make our learning, Telugu, more interesting. Here are some such activities: Picture Stories: We were asked to interpret a story based on a picture sequence. Creative writing helps students in the development and presentation of thoughts in a structured way. It can develop students’ confidence in writing and improve students’ vocabulary, thoughts and ideas. Drama and Role-play: We did a skit virtually based on the story book “పిల్వల ాడు డప్పు “and showcased our acting talent. Drama provides an useful and enjoyable medium to discover language. Acorns could express themselves in a variety of ways and each one of us enjoyed doing this activity. Draw a Story: We were asked to create a Picture Story based on the lesson “నాన్న బళ్ళో చేరడం “from the model book. Drawing a story helps students to practice storytelling and gain confidence in the depth and quality of their ideas. Neethi Padyalu ( నీతి పద్యా లు ) : We have recited some beautiful moral poems along with its meaning in Telugu.
Moral Stories: We learnt morals from our lessons like “చేతనైన్ విద్ా “and “అవును నిజం “. Moral stories are the best way to teach students moral values and life lessons. It also inculcates good manners, social behavior, and respect for elders. Transdisciplinary Language (Telugu) : We made connections to different Transdisciplinary themes through Telugu language. We have explored aspects of civilizations and the components of music by integrating with Telugu Language. We created the video, and we exhibited our project to our parents, teachers, and friends. Our teachers were very helpful and were our guides. They were also a part of our project. They took every step with us. The month of November was very nice and wonderful. We all students enjoyed every minute of this activity. It took a precious place in our hearts. SAMYUKTA SWITZERLAND, GRADE VI BEST STUDENT CERTIFICATE AND BEST HANDWRITING CERTIFICATE Every month in each of our classes, our teachers select the best student of the class, best English handwriting of the class and best handwriting in 2nd language. There is a particular criterion we need to follow to get them. For the best student, it is the student- who turned in the work in time by completing it, who is well behaved in the class and who is regular to the classes with the camera on. Meanwhile, for handwriting, it is legible and neat handwriting. When students are selected based on the above criteria, on 15th of every month, HRT’s post the certificates for everyone to see it for the corresponding student. It is an amazing thing, and everyone can get the certificates if they try. This is kind of motivation to improve ourselves. AMAY GERMANY, GRADE VI
CHARACTER FIRST AND COMPETENCE NEXT – A TALK BY PRINCIPAL MS. SEETHA MURTY Principal's speech - take away - character first and competence next-: The first step into our schoolhouse is Character First and Competence Next and we implement it by using inside out approach. The Inside Out approach can be explained as, how we control our inner emotions, & thoughts, and how we are going to express it through actions in the out approach. To build character and competence, learner profile acts as a backbone. The learner profile has different attributes which are Inquirer, knowledgeable, open-minded, thinker, communicator, principled, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. For example, when I am being principled, I am naturally developing character and competence. Competence can help us finish the finish line, but it always will not help us cross the line, again and again, that is the reason we should build both character first and competence next. RAM ARYAN AUSTRIA, GRADE VI READING FOR FLUENCY A book is a man’s best friend. Reading is very important for us as it expands our mind and helps us evaluate ideas and creativity. It also increases our vocabulary and comprehension skills. Our school helps us in reading by having “reading for fluency” practices in our classes. We get our novels, and our teacher conducts it. We improve in reading day by day with this engagement. It not only develops our reading skills but also our knowledge on a particular topic. Our teachers have a criterion -volume, clarity, fluency, expression, and posture which determines our reading ability. Not only English but we have reading in language, social and many more subjects. Our school has this culture called “culture to read” where it says, we learn to read and read to learn. It also boosts our fluency levels. We use books, newspapers, articles, or any reading material to extend our reading skills. Our school strongly believes that reading is the only treasure which accompanies its owner everywhere and it is right. Our aim is to achieve good fluency in our reading! RUTWIKA DENMARK, GRADE VI
PROCESS OF PYP EXHIBITION First, we had an orientation with our head wing Shobha mam and came to know about the PYP Exhibition. Then we had chosen the different global issues to inquire about and were divided into groups. We, then, started inquiring into the global issues and have chosen 2 different art forms to present our global issue as the theme is How we Express Ourselves. After we chose the art forms, we have integrated different languages and connected them to the Global issues and even The 17 sustainable development goals. We have framed our lines of Inquiries and inquired. These lines of inquiry contain all our research work on our issue. Then we have connected the 17 sustainable development goals to our global issue. We have acquired different skills and also gained the learner profile while we are inquiring. Then we made a slideshow on our learning throughout the PYP Journey and finally explained it to our parents and teachers. NV ADITYA AND SUSHANTH CYPRUS, GRADE VI LAUNCH OF PROJECT GRADUATION In this academic month of February, we can view and assess the knowledge and skills gained by us in this academic year in a more appealing manner. We all thank our dear principal, teachers, and staff to make this graduation project a unique one. ARYAN CHILE, GRADE V
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS Christmas is a special day. It is celebrated worldwide as a festival but mostly celebrated by Christians. So there started a tradition of celebrating the 25th of December as Christmas day. If Christian or not, it is a happy day for everyone as it is a festival for everyone. So, in our school we had fun activities and many more before this pandemic arose. Now we are all in front of devices and seeing our friends and teachers virtually instead of physically which was a little bit less exciting. But we managed to scrape off good knowledge like this too through online classes. This academic year (2020-21) we needed to attend classes online on devices like laptops, phones, iPad etc. This action was taken due to the ongoing pandemic of covid-19. This Christmas we had a pleasant vacation and many fun online activities. We have made badges for our friends. Well almost. We made them in happy month, but it bought us a feeling that it was for Christmas. We had kahoots which made the day fun but also gave us knowledge. Well, if we keep all this aside, we had a fun filled and pleasant Christmas. YASHASVI, PORTUGAL GRADE VI GEARING UP FOR PROJECT GRADUATION From the month of February to March, we had sessions with our homeroom teacher and these sessions helped us to recollect everything we did in the inquiries. From all the sessions that we had, we made running notes which would help us make our website. So, for a few days, we organized our information and put it on our website. After completing, we sent the website to our homeroom teachers. Then, we were given a few days to prepare for our presentation of our website. So, for our presentation, we showed what knowledge we gained from UOI, Math, English, language, science big ideas and social. We are gearing up ourselves to talk about our extracurricular activities and all the skills that we developed while doing them. Next, we will present our overall reflection and what all we understood throughout our 6th academic year. Finally, to assess us, the audience would fill out a Google Form to give their valuable feedback on our presentation. It is really going to be a nice experience to have the freedom to show all our understandings in our own creative and fun way. ABHIRAM, ITALY GRADE VI
MATH MARATHON LEVELS 1 AND 2 Level-1 In level one of the Math Marathon, we answered the google form given to us by the teachers in the time duration of 40-45 mins. Once everyone submitted the form within 2-3 days, we got the results. From each class 5 students were selected to go to the next level. Level -2 We were given a particular date and time to join a link. Once we joined the link our teachers instructed about the essential agreements of Level - 2. We were supposed to finish the google form in 45 minutes. Once all the participants have submitted the google form in the span of 1-2 days, we got our results. And the students who performed well got filtered to the next level. NISCHAYA AND LOCHANA SWEDEN, GRADE VI MATH MARATHON LEVEL 3 Just last year, we started this wonderful competition called Math Marathon. It is a series of 4 levels. Each level gets more and more trickier and less time is given. It helps us improve our logical thinking as the math marathon is not only about math but also about logical solving. There are different types of sums in which, some questions can help us in real life and some questions help us in math and to improve our brain. Most of the sums are logical sums. People who got selected in the 1st marathon and people good in human calculators get selected to the 2nd round and from the second round we get selected to the 3rd round. ARJUN, BELGIUM GRADE VI MEGA MATH MARATHON The Mega Math Marathon was interesting. It showed us a completely different meaning of Math. In it we had 3 rounds, the first two in the morning and the last one in the afternoon. The teams- oneers, irates, Ⲫighters, Number ninjas, Number kings and Xecuters. INTERESTING STRATEGIES FOR LEARNING We used many strategies in class for learning. The strategies were very exciting, engaging, and enjoyable. We were alert and listened to ma’am carefully to be on track and not miss any strategy...Here they are: 1.Strategy used on understanding of the topic: This strategy where ma’am asks us how much we understood the topic and if we are very clear, we give crystal clear. If we are not that clear, then we give a hand sign of medium. If we are not at all clear, then we give a thumbs down… 2. In this strategy, we have to group ourselves and then brainstorm upon all the 15 animal laws. We must pick any 5 of the laws and pen down our conclusion of . This is called think, group, and share strategy. Through, we developed communication skills and social skills. 3. This strategy is about cause and effect of conflict. In this strategy, we are supposed to form groups and then discuss kinds of conflict and their cause and effect. We chose a graphic organizer and noted down the important/key points. Example of a cause: Limited natural resources… 4. This strategy was used to learn geometry more clearly. We had to cut out arcs of different degree angles and paste them. We developed an understanding of the common standard – communicating mathematics though this activity. SAATVIKA FRANCE, GRADE VI
COINS FOR THE COUNTRY-ME AND MY COUNTRY WE GROW TOGETHER Me and My country we grow together is a mission driven into the hearts of the students and staff at Silver Oaks International. The school inspires by emphasizing on how each one of us can play a role in nation building. Just like every drop makes an ocean, every coin can help the country grow is the belief behind the initiative of coins for the country. The school believes that meaningful education can better the country. Children from 4 to 17 years are encouraged to save or earn coins in the earthen pots. Coins for the country this year was creative and nice. We were able to continue our school's tradition of coins for the country. Instead of using pots this year, we had used homemade pots or piggy banks to store the coins in a container. Every Friday, our class would drop money inside their pots. We were very excited to see how coins for the country would go on this year. PAVAN GERMANY, GRADE VI
