Articles Editorial It’s a dream come true. Our TMN magazine was released on May 10, 2022. What a great pleasure to get released by the hands of a wonderful human being, a great inspiration and motivator, Gopinath Muthukad, who has retired himself from the magic field (very sad for us and his audience) and devoted his life to bring up the differently abled children. My heartful thanks and gratitude to the members of the TMN and our other magician friends for supporting so wholeheartedly the launching of this magazine especially Magician Chandrasekar Chaudari & Magician B.S. Reddy for sponsoring Rs. 5000/- and Magician Bala for sponsoring Rs.1000/- for the magazine. My sincere thanks to Mr. Sam Dalal and other senior magicians without whose expert advice I could never have attempted to enter the magazine field. I once again thank Mr. Narayanamurthy without whose unstinted co-operation I could never release the first issue of our magazine in time. My thanks to the contributors and more particularly, to my friend Nahul Shenoy for his enthusiastic foreword. And to all the senior magicians, whose kind wishes and blessings for the magazine have given me so much pleasure and encouragement. I extend my heartful thanks to all my readers who have, either in writing or verbally, expressed their appreciation of the first copy of THE MAGIC NEST. The reception given to the first issue has exceeded my expectations; I am very grateful and can only say that I will do my best to deserve a continuance of the support of all my friends in magic. Readers will be glad to know that I have in hand articles by magicians of repute, from all over the world, and that I have also received many promises of help in the future. All this is very gratifying to me, and, therefore, I am sure of my readers. Further, I would remind all the manufacturers, dealers & magicians, who have any apparatus which they wish to sell or to exchange, that they will find the magazine a very good medium for their advertisements. I am well aware that there is nothing perfect in this imperfect world, but that is no reason why I should not try to make this magazine as nearly perfect as it is possible to make it. That is my ambition, and readers may be assured that I shall spare no effort in my pursuit of it. We invite the magicians to contribute articles, news items, tips, tricks and anything related to magic that will be of interest to the rest of the members. We will also be pleased to receive any suggestions you have to offer on how we can improve this publication and make it more interesting. Articles, tricks, tips, patter and anything of general interest for publication, will greatly be appreciated. If you want to walk faster, walk alone; But if you want to walk far, walk together. - Ratan Tata So let us walk together and walk farther. With Love, Balu THE MAGIC NEST 7 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

Remembering Our Roots – The Great Appadurai Magic Kalai Kavalar, Mayakalai Maamannan, the Great George Parkins Appadurai's interest in the Art of Magic began when he was 14. After his college days, he joined the Government Revenue Service, he was Tahsildar and Executive Magistrate in the Tamilnadu Government. At the end of the day, with the close of his office, a change like that of Clarke Kent took place. What emerged was a magician extraordinaire with more to his credit than many full-time professionals. It may be said he was a pioneer in bringing magic from the streets of this country to sophisticated stages. His first magical excursion, at age 26, was by way of a public show in connection with W.H.O. Day in November 1954. He had conducted shows for many worthwhile and charitable causes ever since. Over time, he had earned many honours and titles including those of Kalai Kavalar and Mayakalai Maamannan. His interest was further stimulated by his meeting with the Mysterious Bhaghyanath and Prof. A.S. Pillai in 1957. His wife is a magician's dream. Not a little of his success was also due to Mrs. Grace Durai who has edited his monthly MAGIC WAND magazine, assisted with his other activities, and served as Ring Reporter for Ring 206. THE MAGIC NEST 8 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

Appadurai was the first to found an organization for magicians in this Indian State. He was also the founder of three very active other groups; the Indian Magic Hobby Assn. (f. Oct. 1969), Ring 206, the Great Appadurai Ring (Dec. 1970), and a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians [FCM] (Sep. 1989). He was a founder of the Intl. Chamber of Magicians and an Honorary member of many other magical groups. In addition, he was a founder/president of the All India Magic Circle, Tamiinadu, having been installed during the AIMC Magic Congress in Bhopal in 1969. A Rotarian for some 15 years, he founded the Rotary Club of Avinashi. In 1971, he was elected I.B.M. Intl. Vice Pres. for India and was elected for succeeding terms until 1974. He was elected Terr. Vice Pres. in 1983 and, in 1989, was again elected Intl. Vice Pres., with re-elections occurring ever since. He also served as Special Representative for the FCM in Asia. During his long magical career he become acquainted with a great number of well-known magicians including the late Sorcar, Sr. and John Calvert. Appadurai was a showman, a mentalist, and a performer of considerable repute known for his generous performances on benefit shows for various causes as well as government sponsored programs. His colourful, fast-moving show, was spiked with excitement and humour, and his mystifying magic had his audiences gasping in amazement. Little wonder his name is preceded by the word \"Great.\" He had a commanding personality yet with polite manners, a pleasing nature, and a winning smile. Endeared by all who knew him, he was accessible to those who would seek his counsel whether they be professional or amateur magicians. THE MAGIC NEST 9 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

His philosophical outlook of taking everything in stride, without fear or favour, enabled him to carry on his determination to bring smiles and happiness to others through the Art of Magic. His achievements were due primarily to hard and untiring work and dedication. Yet he unassumedly said, “Doing magic is just my hobby\". With his retirement from government service in 1986, he devoted his time to that \"hobby\". He had appeared in the cover page of IBM’s Linking Ring Magazine. He had published few books on Magic in English and Tamil. He had appeared in the Tamil movie “Unakaka Ellam Unakkka”. THE MAGIC NEST 10 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

INSPIRATION Chris Wardle One of the things I often get asked after I have lectured at a magic club or society is from where do I get my ideas and inspiration? I use a variety of methods to spark creativity, the one I use most often is to read three unrelated effects from three different magic books last thing at night. Often, this mix of ideas will spark something in my mind and in the morning, I can sometimes wake up with a new idea - although I do have to check that I haven't just remembered one of the tricks I read the night before! Another method is to seek inspiration for plots and effects from sources outside of magic. Use your other hobbies and pastimes, as well as watching films, TV, listening to music, etc. as these can all spark creativity. Bouncing ideas around with like-minded friends is another useful method, as is seeing what else can be done with known principles. Being creative in other (non-magic) activities is also helpful as this creativity and flexibility of thought will cross-pollinate into your magical thinking. Experiment and see what else can be done with a material or a known gimmick. Can a close-up gimmick be developed for a stand-up effect or a stage principle scaled down for close-up? Studying the work of other magical creators and looking for the common themes and methods to which they often return. For example, the ingenious Ian Adair, who has come up with so many clever effects using just the paddle move alone! You can then identify your own favourite methods and see if you can exploit them in similar ways to get more out of an existing method. Sketching and drawing 3D doodles of everyday items and shapes is also a useful approach. This can often alert you to THE MAGIC NEST 11 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

possibilities for pockets, angles, flaps and ways to use a familiar object in a new way. Asking yourself ‘What if?’-type questions and thinking about what you wish you could do with your magical powers if they were actually real is another useful starting point. How would you get out of a situation or solve an everyday problem in a magical way? These questions may lead you to a new effect. Also studying and adapting an everyday item which you could replicate as a gimmick to produce a magical surprise (using a plastic bottle that appears as glass for example.) However, my absolute favourite method is to browse stationery, toy and hobby/craft shops as different containers; stationery, glues, pads, magnets, toys and accessories can all initiate ideas for gimmicks or effects. Browsing online just isn't the same as you need to hold, study and test items, which you cannot do virtually. I am not alone in this method. The late Barry Murray once told me that the great Ali Bongo used to spend many hours browsing the unusual items in toy and stationery shops. So, I feel as though I am in good company - if Ali did it, then it must be worth doing as his ideas are legendary. If you are interested in methodology and creativity and want to read further strategies as well as fifteen example effects, refer the book 'Creating the Impossible - Methods for Magic', released by James Ward and myself in 2018,which is available from all major dealers. Good luck in your magic-making! THE MAGIC NEST 12 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

HOW TO BE AN UNIQUE PERFORMER Mhelly Bhumgara They say there is only one room that always has extra space .That is the room of improvement! This couldn’t be truer than in the field of magic! No matter how good a magician one is, there is always room for improvement. I am sharing few tips and ideas to improve one's act that will not only take it to the next level but also give a wonderful feel-good factor and a high degree of self-satisfaction . The cardinal truth is that a magician feels joy in his heart only when he himself enjoys his performance along with the audience . 1. Routinising your act This is the starting point of self-improvement. Routinising is the stringing together of various effects to make a smooth transition from one effect to the other. A good routine is when there is an interesting flow of the magic and the magician’s act unfolds like a story. Routinising is the most challenging part for any magician. Making a routine takes a great deal of creativity, tons of practice and years of adjustments and changes. So how does one make a routine? Firstly the magician must have a broad idea of what he is good at and how he is going to present it. He has to see where the focus of his magic will be. For example, is it going to be a dove act, a manipulation act, a comedy act, illusions, or a speciality act? Though there may be multiplicity of effects there should be some co-relation between the effects. The magician will have to focus on his skills and try to make one effect blend into the other. This means the end of one effect must be the start of the other effect. Just to give an example, a THE MAGIC NEST 14 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

flash silk appears, it turns into a ball, the ball turns into a card, the card turns into a fan of cards, the fan disappears, then single cards are plucked out from thin air, then a fan appears again, the fan is thrown into the air and a dove appears. The challenging part is how to string the effects together. Don't we normally see magicians picking up a wide variety of props displayed on a table, perform them one by one and put them away! This is nothing but a \"Dealer Demo \" and not a professional magic act. It would be boring, unimpressive and fail to grip the audience. One of the secrets of Routinising is to keep in mind the age- old magic principle of \"one Ahead\". When one hand is doing an effect the other hand is getting ready for the next effect (like taking a load) so that there is no time gap between the two effects. This takes the audience by surprise as they don’t have time to think about how it happened. The magician can achieve a maximum number of surprises in his act by the one ahead principle. Another tip to keep in mind is to exploit the opportunity of dumping and taking a new load at the same time. Each time you go to the table to dump some item it is an opportunity to secretly pick up the next prop. This way two birds can be killed in one shot! 2. Magician'sTable This in fact is the second most important point of improving your act. If you don't carry your own magician's table to a show, you will portray an unprofessional look and will not be able to deliver an entertaining act . Even before a magician makes an entry on the stage, the audience observes his table and will make a first impression of the quality of the performance they are going to see. THE MAGIC NEST 15 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

Many magicians go for a show and ask clients for \"any table\" (or if table is not available even a chair will do !) for spreading their array of props! Nothing can be more unprofessional than this blatant display of props. It is imperative that not only the magician has his own table but also that the table is tailor-made to the specifics of the act .There is no standard magic table suitable for every magic act. One size does not fit in all. In other words, the act is first designed and then the table is made accordingly, and not vice versa. Keep in mind that the table should be foldable, elegant looking, serves as a dump box , and contain the props securely for easy access during the performance. Care must be taken to see that the props are not visible to the audience because that kills the element of surprise. The audience must never know what is going to come up in the act . For example, if you are doing a dove act and have a display cage above your table, then keep the cage covered with a cloth till such time as the first dove is produced. If the audience sees the dove cage before the act, the appearance of the dove will not have a surprise impact! Try to utilise shelf space behind the table so that you get maximum secret space that is not visible to the audience. 3. Stage Craft The audience will enjoy a performance when the magician is himself enjoying it while performing. Pleasant smiling expressions, neat costumes , shining props , courtesy to volunteers and continuous eye contact are important aspects to focus on a magic act . In this respect, eye contact is one of the most important factors. Not only must the eye contact be continuous but also be spread all over the audience so that each and every member of the audience thinks you are only performing THE MAGIC NEST 16 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

specially for him . Many times eye contact is lost at the time of picking up props from the table or dumping items, picking up fallen props or focusing your eyes on the props while handling them. This should be completely avoided. If you lose eye contact even for a few seconds you can lose the audience's attention. Another mistake that many magicians make is facing their backs to the audience when going to pick or drop off props .This looks extremely unprofessional on stage and also against basic stage etiquette. Never let the audience see your back! Another point to note is that pacing up and down the stage or dancing during the act is a thing to be avoided. The audience's attention will be diverted away from the act if the magician moves about on the stage. In fact, any unnecessary movement on stage must not be done. Every action on stage must look natural and there must be a justification for doing the same. For example if a silk is to be transformed into an appearing cane there is no need to wave the silk a hundred times and bore the audience to death before it finally becomes a cane ! I will even go to the extent that waving it 3 times is much too much ! Just one wave is good enough for the cane to suddenly appear! I don't know why, but there seems to be an unwritten law in magic that every magic must happen on the third action! This is so cliche and predictable that you are actually intimating your audience that a surprise is going to happen and thereby dampening the surprise! Haven't you heard magicians say \"Watch this ...1,2…3……! \" Just think, where is the element of surprise when it is actually hinted? Another way to improve your act is to observe video recordings of your real life act. Many flaws which you never realised or knew would come out by this and corrective steps could be taken appropriately. THE MAGIC NEST 17 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

One of the mistakes many magicians make is wearing a top hat throughout the show. This not only looks silly but the shadow of the hat hides the eyes and facial expressions of the magician which is so important for any act. A hat must be only used for a short time on stage and then put away. 4. Don't be a messy performer It is not an uncommon sight when a magic show is over, the magician leaves behind a floor with a complete mess! Litter in the form of confetti, paper streamers, torn newspapers, tissues, playing cards, mouth coils, water puddles, coloured liquids and the like? If another artist comes to perform after the magician he will probably curse and say \" oh no.... the bloody magician was here!” For God's sake magicians must learn not to desecrate the stage on which they perform. Please don't go to a show without a dump box and avoid messing the floor as much as you can. Even if a bit of mess is made, ensure that you or your assistant clears it immediately after the act. I am unable to understand why Indian Magicians have this craze of loading tons of confetti into appearing silks, umbrellas, cages and other appearing items? Wouldn't a pinch of confetti be more than enough to give a magical touch and at the same time look more appealing? We have witnessed several magic convention competitions and gala nights where the entire stage is filled with confetti and other magical mess ! It is therefore important that we as magicians ensure that we leave the floor clean just as we entered. THE MAGIC NEST 18 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

5. Respect to volunteers If you want to be loved and respected you first have to give respect to your audience. Be courteous to your volunteers, especially kids ! Don't ridicule and manhandle them on stage! If you are doing comedy with a volunteer make sure that he is not belittled in front of everyone and is actually laughing along with the audience. Have we not observed many times when a magician asks for a volunteer, there are no takers? Why is that? Could it have been that the people have experienced ridicule at the hands of some other magician at some other show? Each one of us as magicians have a revered responsibility to ensure that magicians, as well as magic art are loved and respected. We should promote magic as the most enjoyable, friendly and amazing entertainment. We should ensure that no one is offended by our actions or language and that people love to see magic again and again. The depth of magic as an art is like a bottomless ocean . It takes years of hard work, dedication and practice to make one’s act near perfection. Improving ones act is a continuous process. It is a joyful process that leads to inner happiness and satisfaction and brings out the best magician in you. The commercial gains will naturally follow through. THE MAGIC NEST 19 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Magician Mhelly is a magic addict since his school days. He is obsessed with magic and walks, talks, eats, drinks, sleeps and dreams magic ! He has successfully used magic as a medium for corporate product launches and has done product based magic for over 150 different companies. His speciality is closeup strolling magic and mentalism. During the lockdown Mhelly and his daughters produced a threesome virtual mentalism show called MIND BLAST which they did over 200 shows on zoom ! LIFE IS BACK! – GOOD DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!! Prakash Savkoor The world is coming back to good days again. Ever since the dreaded Covid 19 stuck us, the entire world was locked in pandemic mode. And with it many an industry & sectors lost business & livelihood. THE MAGIC NEST 20 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

The entertainment field is one which got severely affected. Magicians lost business, were jobless & with it grew despair, depression & financial constraints. No live shows, no events, no conventions, no dealer demos, no competitions & no magic. What a pathetic situation we had to face, isn’t it? I am sure everyone in the magic industry might have faced this. It only tested our patience & determination. But with the global lockdown, few good things happened too. The Magic field saw something which was unheard before – ONLINE MAGIC SHOWS! Many of our fellow magicians took to this new emerging branch of opportunity. Zoom Shows or online Magic shows had lot of new benefits & opened a new Pandora’s box to us. Online shows enabled us to perform from the comfort of our homes, minus the troubles of traffic, travelling to the venue, setting up props & the time. Magicians around the globe, started doing Zoom shows & this had many benefits for the audience too. Spectators could watch Magic shows from their homes, with all in the family for a small fee. Magic which was not so appealing on live stage started getting nice feedback from the audience, thanks to the Zoom show advantages. Magic dealers started promoting props saying, “Ideal & apt for Zoom shows”, which was a welcome bonus! Those who adapted to change quickly designed their online show. Magicians who were from the old school of thought & resistant to change, grumbled about the birth of online shows, its disadvantages & how it is leading to lost opportunities! Thankfully we are seeing “achhe din (good days)” back again! THE MAGIC NEST 21 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

Mankind managed to tackle covid, gates reopened, people came back to work, routine life restarted & with it also thankfully opened new hope for us Magicians. Live Magic shows are here again. Magicians can be in limelight again. So, get ready, polish your props again, practise, mend your costume, reach out to your past clients & get started once again. Though the live magic show market is just blooming back, online shows are here to stay. Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo, Netmeds, Big Basket has revolutionized the buying patterns of the consumer. Brick & wall stores are now competing with these new biggies. Similarly, we Magicians must get used to online entertainment, customize to people’s needs. Movie watching in cinemas is unfortunately coming down. People are switching to newer platforms like OTT – Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. Will this mean movie theatres will close & people will watch movies at homes? The answer: You have the photo or idol of your favorite God at home. Yet you go the temple to pray! Likewise…… !!!! ABOUT THE AUTHOR Prakash Savkoor, is our guest columnist for TMN Magic Nest. Tricks for you VISITING RING Rajamoorthy Impromptu effects with visiting cards are often reputation makers. Here’s one such effect that is easy to do and yet is strong enough. EFFECT: The magician draws a ring behind his business card and hands it over to the spectator. He then causes the drawing to jump from the spectator’s card to his in a visual manner. The card is finally handed over with a lasting impression. WHAT YOU NEED: 4 Business Cards, a marker PERFORMANCE: Take four of your business cards, turn them face down and on the blank surface of the top card, draw a ring as neat as possible. Spread the cards to show that the other three are indeed blank (fig 1). As you close the cards, hold a pinky break under the top two cards. Your right hand then holds the top two cards as one using a ‘Biddle grip’ and slides them to the right. The top two cards are now gripped between your left thumb on top and your left index, middle and ring fingers underneath (fig.2). In one continuous movement, turn your left hand face down and at the same time your left thump will slide the ‘Ring card’ back. Pull out the protruding card (actually blank on the back) and keep it (print side up, of course!) on the spectator’s hand. THE MAGIC NEST 25 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

When done smoothly, this is a move that helps you to switch cards without any suspicion. Ask him/her to cover it with their other hand. Take the remaining three cards in your right hand and fan them (the ‘Ring card’ is now on the bottom). Remove the middle card and turn it blank side up and place it back in the middle. Now it’s time for the visual appearance of the ring. Make a wide fan with the three cards. Your right thumb and index finger pinch the three cards on the right bottom corner. Your right middle finger rests along the bottom short side of the middle card (fig. 3). Wave the three cards above the spectator’s closed hands. As you wave, your right middle finger will push the bottom two cards causing them to flip over ending in a flash appearance of the ring (fig. 4 and 5). Start with a moderate speed as you wave the cards and gradually slow down once the ring has appeared. The stunned spectator will now open his/her hand and see that the ring has ‘disappeared’ from between their hands and reappeared visually in between two other business cards. https://youtu.be/jo_Q9SmFZgg THE MAGIC NEST 26 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

PHONE PIN REVEAL Shameer Salim There are many apps with which you can unlock a phone. Cipher is my absolute favourite. There are some ingenious no-app solutions put out by Michael Murray which doesn’t involve any app. Check out his works - Calculated Risk, Cal-Ender, Code Breaker on the same. The following technique shows a one-ahead principle to get the passcode. THE MAGIC NEST 28 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

History I was with a couple of friends and I happened to peek (shoulder look) at one of my friends phone pin. He was an iPhone user. I kept thinking how to make the best out of it. I could either mind read him and reveal his pin or do something even better. I decided to use this to reveal an Android phone user’s PIN. Performance For the sake of understanding, Isaac has an iPhone Akhil has an Android Phone Mentalist: “Akhil, Keep your palm over mine. Good.. now focus on each and every number in your phone passcode. Hmm.. I am sorry, I am having a hard time reading your thoughts. Your thoughts are scattered all over. Let me try something else. I would need another person’s help to get to your thoughts. Let's pick one more person.. Let's see.. Shijin.. or you know what.. Isaac, please join me here...” Mentalist: “Akhil, open the calculator app on your phone and enter your PIN. And hit PLUS (+) Have you done that? Great.. Isaac, can you add your pin now to that number? Now you have generated a completely random number. You can show everyone now what number you have generated. Akhil, think of a number between 1 and 50 and multiply the result with the total. Have you done that? Perfect.. Now it's even random. You can show everyone the total if you want.” “Akhil and Isaac.. I want you to look at the number on the screen and read it in your mind at least 3 times. You don’t have to memorize it. Just read it 3 times in your mind. Great.. I want you to clear everything on the calculator. Hit AC, 0 to make sure there are no traces. Now lock your phone.” THE MAGIC NEST 29 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

(And then you borrow Akhil’s Android phone and unlock the phone) Method You know the iPhone User’s Passcode, which is 2006. After Akhil sums up his passcode with Isaac’s passcode, you just have to subtract Isaac’s passcode from the total. In my case, Isaac’s passcode was 2006 and it was easy to subtract with the help of a calculator. Akhil’s Pin code = Total – 2006 OR Akhil’s Pin code = Total – 2000 – 6 It is easy to subtract when you put it like that. Multiplying the total with a random number between 1 and 10 was one deceptive way to make it look even random. FINAL THOUGHTS During a pre-show, You can either use an app like Cipher or Michael Murray’s principles to get the PIN of one user. Later when you can bring in a freely chosen spectator on the stage, call up the pre-shown, person and execute the effect. You don’t have to touch their phones at all in this case. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shameer Salim - A Software Engineer by profession, who found his love in magic a few years back and never turned back since then. WHERE IS MY CARD Dindigul Sundaramoorthy EFFECT: A selected card from a mixed deck is revealed. WHAT YOU NEED: A full deck of cards. PERFORMANCE: A shuffled deck is given to a spectator who cuts it at any place and deals SEVEN CARDS face down in a line on the table. He then looks at any of these cards, remembers it, takes up the other six and mixes his card among them. He hands the packet to the magician, who looks through the cards and removes one of them, tabled it face down. The spectator is asked to name the card and when the performer turns over the card, he holds it proves to be the same one. SECRET: The secret is the Si-Stebbins Stack. Now a days magicians have forgotten the stacking systems in their card work. The following is a beautiful effect which seems to be hard to do in practical but in real, it is very easy to do. In this effect the cards are not marked. He has not seen the face of a single card until the packet of seven is handed to him. Then how? The pack is stacked in the Si Stebbins order and the magician retains this order in the false shuffle with which the routine begins. If seven cards are dealt from any position of a pack so stacked, it is not difficult to rearrange them in their original order THE MAGIC NEST 31 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

after they have been mixed. But doing this will take a time of over half a minute and this would be fatal to the effect. So, we use a simpler way to solve this. Wherever they come from, the seven cards consist of four of one colour and three of the other. Ignore the four cards of the same colour. Take the remaining three cards of the other colour. Among them, two cards will have the same suit and the remaining single card will have the other suit. (That single card is the 4th card of that line). Subtract 9 from the value of that single card (if it is already less than 9, add 13 before making the subtraction) and that gives the value of the first card in the line. Everything else stems from that. (eg.1) Let’s say the 7 cards are 8C, JH, AS, 4D, 7C, 10H, KS. The spectator looks the 5th card, 7C. Now, the seven cards are mixed and cards are in your hand in the order AS, 10H, 7C, 4D, JH, 8C & KS The first thing is to sort out the colour represented by only three cards, mentally as below: AS 7C 8C KS à All black JH 10H 4D à All red The next is to find the single card among these three. Here the single card is 4D. Add 13 to the value of the card (i.e.) 17, subtract 9 and the result is 8 (4+13-9=8). So 8C is the first card of the line. Hence the line is 8C, JH, AS, 4D, 7C, 10H, KS. Since you noticed at what position in the line lay the card at which the spectator looked, you are in a position to name it. THE MAGIC NEST 32 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

FINAL THOUGHTS: Suppose if the single card in the group of three cards is 10 or J or Q or K (which are greater than 9) you simply subtract 9 from these values and get the result. There is no need, of course, to rearrange the seven cards physically, but knowing the card with which to start you can do this very speedily. AMAZING CANDY MYSTERY Dibya Guha Effect: The magician shows three candies of three different brands: JUZT JELLY, PULSE & ECLAIRS & places them inside a cup which is sitting in full view on the table. He then covers the mouth of the cup with a plate. Next the performer introduces 3 cards on which are the pictures of the 3 candies which he had just shown. A spectator chooses one of the cards & the picture of the selected candy is noted. The magician makes a magical snap over the cup & asks the spectator to lift the plate & tip the contents of the cup into his hand. Surprisingly, it is seen that the actual candy kept in the cup which has been chosen by the spectator has disappeared from within its wrapper & has ended up in the magician’s mouth! The remaining 2 candies may then be consumed by the spectator himself or taken home as souvenirs. Materials Required: a. 4 candies, two of which needs to be Juzt Jelly or any other of that sort which has a jelly like soft appearance. The remaining two candies may be simply of two other brands & may not be jelly like. For these two other candies I use PULSE & ECLAIRS. b. 3 cards bearing pictures of the 3 different candies (i.e. JUZT JELLY, PULSE & ECLAIRS). c. A plate to cover the mouth of the cup. Setup: Remove one of the JUZT JELLY candies from within its wrapper & when you have done so seal the mouth of the wrapper with glue. You need to place this JUZT JELLY candy in your mouth & hold it between your teeth & cheek just before performing the effect. Since the JUZT JELLY candy is soft & jelly like much of a bulge will not be visible. The empty JUZT JELLY wrapper will be placed inside the cup which is placed on the table from the very beginning. The other JUZT JELLY candy along with the other two candies are placed in your right side coat pocket along with the picture cards Performance: While performing, bring out the candies from your pocket & display them in your right palm. The JUZT JELLY candy at this point of time must be the one closest to the base of your right-hand fingers. Now execute a Shuttle pass from your right hand to your left hand. However, during this maneuver you secretly finger palm the JUZT JELLY candy in your right hand. Place apparently the 3 candies in the cup & cover the cup with the saucer. Casually place your right hand which conceals the JUZT JELLY candy in your right-side pocket & dump the candy in the pocket at the same time bring out the cards bearing the pictures of the candies. Force the card containing the picture of JUZT JELLY on to the spectator. Now magically snap over the cup & ask the spectator to pour out the contents of the cup. He/she will be surprised to find the empty JUZT JELLY wrapper. Open your mouth dramatically to show that the JUZT JELLY candy has magically transported from its wrapper & ended up in your mouth. https://youtu.be/nA7mA6XL86Q THE MAGIC NEST 38 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

FINAL THOUGHTS: The spectators need to be seated a bit away from the table so that they cannot look directly into the cup which contains the empty JUZT JELLY wrapper. Discover The Magician in You Book review by Johan Robertson ( U.K) Overall The structure is impeccable. The format of an engaging narrative, technical breakdown, and essay that ties together the two, is perfect. Overall, the author has put together a very engaging and entertaining book. That is not easy to do in any genre. Equally impressive is the storytelling. The author knows how to build a narrative structure. The technical breakdowns on magic is where the book shines. It is clear that Clifford is a master of his craft. He explains techniques and methods in a way that is engaging, accessible, and easy to understand. I’ve tested most of the tricks I had the necessary props for, and while I’ve never tried magic, I felt that with practice it wouldn’t take me very long to be able to try them on family and friends. I also found the fact that Clifford included a reference to the history of the trick and credited the inventor, when possible, which is very admirable. THE MAGIC NEST 45 Nest-1 / Egg - 2

As a whole, this script is very well thought through and Clifford has done a great job putting it together. Overall, this book is terrific! Review With this book, Illusionist Clifford Parakh, sets out to inspire you to discover the magic in your life. The tricks themselves are not the focus here, rather it’s on the effect that they have when you perform them. Through a set of entertaining anecdotes, the magician vividly illustrates how a little magic can add value to your life by entertaining others. Like the flight captain who woos his co- pilot with a hot card, or the doctor who calms his patient’s mother with his 52 assistants. Throughout, Illusionist Clifford Parakh provides the reader with decades of insight, guiding the reader towards daring to engage with one’s surroundings and be entertaining. The instructions for the eleven tricks included are all described in a manner that is easy to follow for beginners. Illustrative photographs help you get the hang of all the little nuances of the different techniques. The variety makes it easy for anyone to pick one that feels compelling to them and get to work. The tricks vary from card magic, predictions, and mind- reading magic. As Clifford mentions in the book the tricks are simple to do but very effective. The reason for presenting the author with easy tricks is to encourage them to pick up magic as a hobby and in turn reap the benefits of this fascinating art. But, as stated, the tricks are not the focus. At the end of this book, you will have learned the basic tools for how to engage an audience and not only make them pay attention but give them something in return. https://dl.flipkart.com/s/B0U5vxuuuN THE MAGIC NEST 46 Nest-1 / Egg - 2
