Welcome to the Riso intro guide! A Risograph is a fantastic machine with a variety of options for creating exciting prints. This is a basic overview of how to properly utilize Riso to create new and unique looks for your work. Riso means ideal in Japanese. The Risograph was invented in 1986 by the Japanese company RISO Kagaku Corporation. You will be able to print up to two spot colors at a time. You can achieve similar print textures like you would with screen-printing but at a fraction of the time and cost. If you still have questions after reading this, please see one of the DIC staff members who will be able to assist you. Let’s get started! 4

Riso 101 What does a Riso Printer Do? The Riso Machine creates a ‘digital’ stamp’ of individual colors (which are incredibly vibrant!) and together they create a colorful image. How does a Riso Work? When you scan or upload an image to the machine, it first makes a paper stencil and wraps this around the ink drum - these are called masters. Paper is placed on the feeder and passed through one or two of the ink drums. Below are a few basic tips to get the best out of your designs for Risograph printing. We’ll look at setting up your files in Photoshop, turning your colors to grayscale, and then how to save them. 5

The Risograph works by burning your image as a stencil, the master, which is wrapped around the Ink drum. The paper then is fed through the ink that goes through the Master onto the paper creating a print. You will have to run several prints for the ink to be fully on the paper. The master will be on that ink drum until the you clear it or the next master is made. How to clear the master: 1. Click home, 2. Click dual tone on the screen 3. Clear the master of your choosing. 4. Run prints through until ink is completely gone on page. You will burn through a lot of paper. Make sure to print proofs before you print on your actual paper. You can input how many proof copies on the pinpad in the control panel. · About Riso Ink Riso Ink is absorbed into the paper. If you are putting the print through the riso more than once to use a third color you need to wait 15 minutes or more until dry enough to put a second layer. You will want to lay darker ink (such as black) last, Feel free to experiment with different layering methods, but always give it time to dry. RISO INK also smudges very easily. If you get a smudge you can take a rubber eraser to pick up some of the smudged ink. You will have to run several prints to take away ink from a previous master and to make sure the ink fully comes down onto the page. What colors do we have? Teal, Medium Blue, Black, Bright Red, Yellow, Green, Fluorescent Pink. · (Get hex codes for these colors) Switching ink drums. 1. Open the front printer door. 41

RISO AT A GLANCE The Risograph printer is similar to screen printing. The risograph uses single colors to print designs from a master stencil. It uses wax paper to create a stencil called the master and soy based inks to print. File is sent from Computer or Scan Bed Master is created for each color by burning a negative image onto a waxed sheet. The master is wrapped around the drum. The ink is forced through the voids of the master. The paper runs flat and the drum rotates at a high speed to transfer the ink onto the paper. It takes 48 hours to complete a two color Risograph for a SINGLE sided print. Add 24 hours for each additional color! 49

ANATOMY OF RISO Before You Print 1. Wake the Riso by pressing the button 2. Switch the ink drum to the color you want. 3. Insert paper 4. Clear previous master To Clear Previous Masters 1. Click Home 2. Click dual tone, 3. Clear master on the drum of your choosing. 4. It will take a while for the ink to clear from the previous master. 50
