WRITTEN BY BEATRIX FERNANDEZ PHOTOS BY BEATRIX FERNANDEZ INTRODUCTION Dear Reader, It is my pleasure to introduce myself. My name is Beatrix Graecia C. Fernandez. I am born and raised in the Philippines. I have done my schooling in Saint Louis University. Currently, I am pursuing my last year of the K to 12 Basic Education Program. I am set to take an Aviation Program for my Bachelor's Degree. Every person has the right to participate in the decision-making processes that impact them and interests them. This includes a freedom to express their views. I advocate for climate justice. I also adore the aviation industry and dream of a future wherein the number of male and female pilots are equal. I'm also fond of eating delicacies and dishes. Lastly, I also find comfort in making art,. Art then piques me to create sketches, doodles and graphics. All of these are reflected in this portfolio. Also, provided within this portfolio is my mastery of concepts and skills that I have learned in the subject, English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP). The subject has given me additional time to focus on critical reading, reasoning, writing, and research skills. It has also developed my communication skills in preparation for academic and professional interactions which I believe qualifies me for tertiary education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

FOOD REVIEW By Beatrix Fernandez Photographs by Beatrix Fernandez When the sun sets in the afternoon and my face is a figure that can’t be painted because of overestimating myself, my father cooks homemade mashed potatoes and garlic chicken. It seems only fair. A plate full of rich flavors that fortifies against my bad condition. My father’s version of mashed potatoes and garlic chicken wings mirror the same amount of love and support my family embraces me with. It was my Father who first introduced me to proper mashed potatoes, made with potatoes, margarine and salt water only. Before, I had no notion that mashed potatoes could be anything more than the disappointing combination of potatoes and salt which was only meant to be fed to infants. But one weekend morning, a few years ago, the sun just risen by five o’clock, he walked into the kitchen and saw me finishing a presentation. “Did you sleep?” he asked. “I’m going to make you breakfast. I watched as he pulled chicken from our refrigerator, and then few ingredients from the pantry. The hefty meal came together quickly, simply, just boiling the potatoes and frying the chicken. When he handed me the plate, I admire the sight in front of me. The taste of the mashed potatoes and garlic chicken is electric. Garlic chicken simmers under a blistery rain of carrots. Its spice-bombed fragrance, lightened by the potatoes, infuses the room; our neighbors must have turned their backs to smell the aroma. It was architecturally sound, built on a salty, smooth textured potatoes. And it had a restrained, mellow flavor, carefully tempered with umami. The dish immediately brings a smile upon my face, both of dimples appear and lifts my spirit up. He has been making me this meal ever since. This is the kind of meal where, once you learn the basic proportions you prefer, you really don’t need a recipe to make it at all. The recipe can be scaled up to serve a crowd. If there are children in the bunch, make sure to add gravy. Personally, I dislike gravy and just want to savor the unique taste of the mashed potatoes and garlic chicken in my mouth. Alternatively, I will not judge you for sneaking few tablespoons of sauce on your plate. This meal is delicious even without the dollop of lettuce and carrot garnish, but the latter looks fancier, doesn’t it? I also do not add any sauce for me to dip the chicken into, because the sharp combination of garlic and soy is rich enough for me as is, but if you want to add a tangy and fresh, feel free to stir in some ketchup and soy for a dressing. Although it’s one of my favorite meals that surely brings me comfort, I’ll never wish for it to be served upon the table every day because that only means I went through a rough day.

Women must try to do things men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others. - AMELIA EARHART PHOTO BY FRANK GOODYEAR

A CORNER IN THE SKY FOR HER Since the earliest years of my childhood, I have always dreamed of becoming a pilot. I have a passion for aviation. The fact that an aircraft can defy the basic principles of physics to soar high above the clouds astonish me. My goal is to be able to commandeer an aircraft myself and understand the complex inner workings that make an aircraft take flight. However, it surprised me to know that female pilots still account for a small portion of the pilot population. (Description, Cause & Effect) Female pilots make up about 7 percent of all pilots. 10 years ago, statistics show that it was only 6.2 percent. Professional pilot ranks are even less diverse with only 4.3 percent of women holding professional pilot certificates. Depending on how you look at it, these numbers are either an absolute improvement after years of stagnation, or a dismal record that is being overshadowed by industries that are certainly male dominated. (Description, Cause & Effect) A lack of mentoring and positive role models also comes forward as a significantly bigger challenge. It is easy for men to imagine themselves in the cockpit as they see male pilots in movies, at the airport, and on an airliner, but for women those sightings are not frequent. The under-representation of woman and girls in aviation creates unconscious gender bias. People do not even realize that they are part of the problem. Instead of creating the necessary solutions. Society dictates a story that women cannot fly and that male pilots are better than female ones. (Description, Cause & Effect) The lack of female representation roots from sexism that is still a characteristic of the aviation industry. Women involved in aviation have countless stories of facing some form of harassment or discrimination during their training, at the airport, or as part of their career. Several studies have shown that female pilots tend to be judged more negatively when they make errors and that they are often ridiculed for not being able to take criticism from their instructors. (Description, Comparison & Contrast) While other industries, such as the medical field and law enforcement, have enjoyed a marked improvement in female representation, aviation is still struggling. There may be a progress in the recent years, but it is not enough to suffice real representation. The hindrances for females to get into aviation are too many to count. There needs to be a change in the social paradigm for people to see female pilots as being just as competent as male counterparts. Although it is going to be a slow and difficult process and it will take the collaborative effort of industries communities, and individuals, it will be worthwhile. WRITTEN BY BEATRIX FERNANDEZ PHOTOS BY BEATRIX FERNANDEZ #FUNDTHEFOREST I. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND As we transcend into a more develop and advanced society, our natural resources are being compromised. Mountain ranges turn into dams, trees being cut down to build buildings, and mountains are being holed up. Mining, illegal logging, deforestation, and pollution are some of the long lists of environmental issues experienced in the Philippines. Sadly, we are already feeling the effects of these issues. From low-pressure typhoons, it has evolved into super gales with some incidences of tornadoes. Monsoon rain warning elicits fear as it can bring flash floods. Temperatures rise, and our heat index has increased dramatically. However, environmental strikers and organizations Youth Advocates for Climate Action in the Philippines and Greenpeace Philippines are fighting and demanding a climate emergency because they firmly believe that nature's splendor is the legacy of every Filipino to the future generations. If these issues are being left in the open, there would be no future for the next generations. Environmental awareness is not only a movement about planting more trees and marching in the streets. According to Pachamama Alliance, it means being aware of the problems and understanding our environment's fragility and the importance of its protection. Furthermore, it is doing even the smallest of things to begin fixing the issues that threaten it. Lawmakers in the Philippines passed Republic Act No. 9512 on National Environmental Awareness and Education Act, 2008., which states that it promotes environmental awareness through environmental education and reminds and educates citizens of their responsibilities as stewards of the environment. This act leads various programs and organizations to rise, such as the World Wide Fund, Greenpeace Philippines, and Bantay Kalikasan, to protect and save the environment and our natural resources. #FundtheForest is a way to make a step and action to save and protect every Filipinos' source of food, protection, and livelihood, even in the simplest of things.

II. PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES The primary goal and purpose of #FundtheForest is to become an online response to the threats of global warming, climate change, food security and the preservation of biodiversity in the Philippines, all for sustainable development. An advocacy invites individuals most especially the youth, to become more conscious of the importance of trees in sustainable development. Through the advocacy the you will become more environmentally aware be mindful of their actions in the struggle of climate crisis. They will be able to educate themselves, impart their knowledge to the community and society, and making a difference for the future's betterment, and saving the environment's natural resources and living legacy. III. PROJECT DESCRIPTION A. SET ACTIVITIES 1. SHARE YOUR ECO-STORIES The pandemic has stolen most of our daily routines, but it surely did not steal our voices. With the given situation, webinars, blogs and online videos and forums are possible ways to promote awareness. These activities will be done through the official website of #FundtheForest. The website will be the main tool, in order to join the advocacy. Registering through the website will allow you to share your own struggles because of Climate Change through an online forum. Some may also suggest ways on how to solve these struggles. Webinars, videos and other online materials will be posted in the website and all will revolve around the meaning of environmental awareness and the possible ways and activities you and your community can do to participate in #FundtheForest. Through this activity, individuals are also encouraged and allowed to voice their thoughts, suggestions, and experiences in the comfort if their homes. With this, we are all able to educate ourselves, each other and use our voices to raise ecological awareness.

2. LIVE THE TREE LEGACY The main purpose of #FundtheForest program Is to become an online response to the threats of global warming, climate change, food security and the preservation of biodiversity in the Philippines, all for sustainable development. However, we would also like to aim to commence with the reforestation of trees and plants to restore trees in the local communities in the Philippines. Planting will be encouraged to participants. They will also be encouraged to use their biodegradable wastes as fertilizers. Moreover, using recyclable wastes as their pots and decors helps decrease pollution and lessen the vast amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This activity will not be hard to implement since many people are engrossed in planting since the pandemic. We are also encouraging everyone to post their planting activities and use the hashtag #LivingtheTreeLegacy to persuade and influence others to do the same 3. WORK YOUR WASTE 4. LOVE YOUR LOCAL In the website, #FundtheForest will be #FundtheForest will be supporting local encouraging everyone to engage in proper shops who are selling eco-friendly items, most especially sustainable products. Some waste segregation in their homes and examples of these are clothes made from recycled fabric, reusable containers and neighborhood. We, #FundtheForest will post organic food. This way, we are helping locals a suggested Waste Management Plan for with their small business and are also able to participant. This will help participant become decrease waste. more conscious in disposing their wastes. Improper waste management has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems. However, this activity will encourage the participants that they can save money while potentially creating a new business opportunity for themselves. Having a proper waste management can result in the availability of valuable materials to reuse and can improve public health.

B. EXPECTED OUTCOMES When the activities are implanted, the outcomes are as follows: 1. Every individual that decided to join the #FundtheForest program has joined any of the set activities listed above and become more aware of knowledgeable about environmental issues. It is also expected of them to take urgency towards climate action and that they are able, to impart the environmental knowledge with their family members, friends, and community. 2. The activities, such as planting, recycling, and avoiding using plastics, become a routine and practice for everyone to reduce pollution and decrease waste. 3. The #FundtheForest advocacy will draw the attention of local government unit (LGU) and/or administration and will support and help the advocacy promote environmental awareness nationwide. C. INDICATORS OF ACHIEVEMENT Increased number of participants in the website will be one of the indicators of achievement in this outcome. However, the real indicator of achievement in this outcome can only be evaluated by the individuals themselves. They should evaluate themselves whether they have become more environmentally aware, if they have put into actions the lessons they have learned in the website and as well as if they were able to share their learning to their communities Increased number of participants in the website will be one of the indicators of achievement in this outcome. Another is the increase of people using the hashtag #LivingtheTreeLegacy when posting their planting activities. More environmental awareness regulations and policies will be implemented by the government, may it be locally or nationally. Another is that there will be climate emergency that will be issued so that there will be collective and urgent action towards deforestation.

SYNTHESIS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF GRANT PROJECT WRITTEN BY BEATRIX FERNANDEZ PHOTO BY CALVIN STILLER. What is happening in our environment, not only in the Philippines but across the globe, is alarming. According to, Fostering Education & Environment for Development (FEED Inc.), a non)- stock, non- profit, non-governmental organization registered with the Philippine Securities & Exchange Commission, by destroying Earth's natural forestation we threaten our existence. Educating ourselves, using our voices, and taking action to save and protect our environment and the future of many generations, there is no doubt that we can ease and prevent alarming and worrisome events. We can eliminate issues that threaten it. The environment is not only about the water, air, land, and animals, but it is also about humans too. We depend on our natural resources to protect us from natural calamities, to provide us food, shelter, and livelihood. We need to take a step and action to save our natural resources on which we depend on and our legacy. That is why #FundtheForest is an advocacy not only to save the environment but as well as to save our own lives.
