gatha Christie’s Miss Marple Story, A Murder is Announced, was publishedA in 1950. It is, as with most of the MissMarple stories, set in a sleepy English village, not long after the war. During one scene,a villager bemoans to Miss Marple that thevillage is changing. Before the war, everyoneknew their neighbour and no-one would moveinto the village without a letter of introduction. Now anyone could move in, and no-onewould know who they are, with the result thata murder could happen and no-one have theslightest suspicion as to the perpetrator. Thestory is an interesting exploration of the angstof a community where no-one really knowsthe identity of their neighbour.Sixty years on, and we have moved well October/November 2013beyond letters of introduction. Most of us Delivered free to 5,250 homes in S8don’t know who lives the other end of our The Caring Societystreet, let alone in the community around us.Without wishing to idealise the pre-war English village – a place wheremurders could certainly happen, along with every other vice – it is certainlythe case that for a variety of reasons the cohesion of our communities, and our ability to care for one another, has fallen into disrepair. It is not all, however, doom and gloom. One of the encouraging partsof my role is, perhaps surprisingly, the conducting of parish funerals.Often when I learn about the life of the person whose funeral it is, I willfind out about all the people who have cared for them in their old age.Sometimes they will have had no blood relations to care for them andyet neighbours will have looked out for them – cleaning their house, shopping for them, taking them on trips into Derbyshire, running them to hospital. This is certainly one of the differences that I have noticed between Sheffield and London, where such acts of neighbourliness were much rarer. The answer to the very difficult problems of caring for our neighbour lies not in trying to get back to an idyllic 1930s village, but in keeping an eye out forthose closest to us, and making it known that weare willing to help out when we can. It’s not rocket science and it won’t change our world overnight. But perhaps it is just one way in which we can follow the Bible’s command to “love our neighbour as ourselves”. Thanks to a range of funders, includingthe Sheffield Church Burgesses Trustand English Heritage, the cathedral hasbeen able to plan for a new nave floor, new heating, new lighting, a new levelentrance, new seating and a whole rangeof other improvements which will enhancethe experience for worshippers and visitorsto the cathedral. This has been a time ofmajor upheaval for all those involved in thework and ministry of the cathedral, but weare very confident that is will all be worth itin the end. The building and conservation work isbeing carried out by an expert team ofcraftsmen who specialise in the restorationof fine and historic buildings.
