salutations I pay my respects to Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles and make the work a success. Then, to the Goddess Saraswati to inspire me to write out the work. Then, to the Gods; Brahma, Vishnu and Shankar - the Creating, Preserving and Destroying Deities respectively. Then, to my tutelary Deity Narayan. Then, to the Rani Sati Dadi, into whose gotra (clan) I was born and also to various Rishis, Yagyavalakya, Bhrigu, Parashara, Narad, Vedavyasa, Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatkumar, Shuka. Shounak, Vishwamitra, Vasistha, Valmiki, Vamadeva, Jaimini, Vaishampayan, Nava Yogindra etc, and also modern Saints such as Nivritti, Jnanadev, Sopan, Muktabai, Janardan, Ekanath, Namdev, Tukaram, Kanha, and Narahari etc. I also pray to Sai Nath Maharaj, the greatest saint of all times to bless me and help me complete this collection for my near and dear ones. Lastly but most importantly to my Gurudev H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar who has imbibed in me the various practices created by Lord Shiva which has therein made me worthy of making an attempt to compile the great stories and facts about Lord Shiva.
preface The plot revolves around the story of Lord Shiva. This mesmerising story of Lord Shiva and his all avatar, traces his journey from being an ascetic to a family-man. Shiva never took birth on Earth but has existed in principal form since the beginning of eternity. He exists as air, water, earth, fire and space. Even though he himself was never born, there are a number of holy places that have been created by the power of Shiva and his beloved wife, Sati which still have its doors opened to all those seeking to merge with the divine. This book is a collection of facts and places where the divine with his grace has blessed us by manifesting himself in the form of Shivlings. Each holy place has its own significance and special history behind creation which has been briefly summarised.
Holy Places related to Lord Shiva
KAILASH Mahadev's abode on earth mansarovar It’s in Kailash. Favourite spot of Mahadev and Devi Parvati for leisure. Here a pair of Swans are seen which signifies togetherness of married couples. Only pure hearted people can see this himalayas Goddess Parvati's parents -Parvatraj King Himavan and Queen Nainawati were ruling here. All their sons had turned into mountains and daughters into river for social work. amarnath cave Lord Shiva did penance here for long after death of Sati. Kamadev was burnt here as he tried to break Samadhi of Lord Shiva. In return Kamdev's wife Devi Rati had cursed Parvati that she won't be able become pregnant and Also Indradev that his throne will always be insecured. Goddess Parvati did tapa here to please and get Lord Shiva by removing her previous impurities left during Sati's birth. After completion of penance, Lord Shiva accepted her.
Also Lord Shiva and goddess parvati joined their energies by meditation to produce Kartikeya. Here 2 pigeons had witnessed penance of Goddess Parvati and she being accepted by Lord Shiva hence Goddess Parvati granted boon to them to be there for ever. Devi Parvati had erased all post memories once, which was revived in her by Mahadev thru Ashtang Yoga. Mahadev brought Devi Parvati to Amaranth for completing last stage \"Samadhi\" of Ashtang Yoga. pahalgam Mahadev and Devi Parvati had left their devotee bull Nandi to wait here, on way to Amarnath for birth of Kartikeya. gangotri River Ganga daughter of Himavan was by Brahmadev to sanctify heaven which was made impure by demons. She was brought by King Bhagirath for relieving souls of his ancestors. She touched the earth from Gangotri. As her force was too strong, Lord Shiva controlled on his jata. narmada River Narmada originated from Madeva’s ansh to purify Ganga due to curse of Goddess Parvati. mandarachal parvat This mountain was used for Ocean Churning. Also Mahadev and Devi Parvati stayed here when removed with all deva's from Kashi by King Ripunjay- Devdas until they were invited back by the emperor with guilt.
kumbh mela It's organized at 4 places- Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nasik and Ujjain. Indradev had tough fight with Asurraj Bali when he forcefully took Nectar from heaven. During tussle, drops of nectar fell down at these 4 places where Kumbh mela is organized every 12 years. kashi Favourite place of Mahadev and Devi Parvati. Mahadev assured to be in every part of soil here for ever. Important facts- - First Shaktipeeth and second Jyotirling Vishwanath made after Sati's death. Here Goddess Parvati had dropped her earring during earlier birth as Sati. Goddess Parvati had visited after marriage with Mahadev at last after visiting all Shaktipeeth. This time she kept her second earrings after which bank of river was called Karnikaghat. Moreover Dakhs Prajapati was relieved from curse here in Vishalakshi temple. If anyone does worship in Vishalakshi then will get blessings of Mahadev and Goddess Parvati both. - In Kashi Veda's composition into music, initiated by Mahadev and completed by Raavan. - Shaileshwar/Ratneshwar Mahadev Shivling was constructed inside the palace offered by King Himavan to Mahadev in Kashi. Mahadev assured to stay with his ansh forever here. Devi Parvati granted boon to devotee to be treated as their own child, whoever worships Shaileshwar Mahadev daily.
- Vygreshshwar Mahadev temple is in Kashi. A demon Dundubhi (maternal uncle of Prahlad) attacked Mahadev's devotee in form of tiger and was killed by Mahadev. On request of all devotees, Mahadev agreed to stay in Shivling \"Vyaghreshwar\" worshipped by them. - Devdasheshwar Mahadev in Kashi relieves from proud and ignorance if worshipped. Once a Kashi Emperor Ripunjay had obtained control of all five elements as boon after great penance of Brhamadev. Brhamadev called him \"Devdas\". He removed all Deva's including Mahadev from Kashi, as he believed only on hard work for success and not on any divine presence. Kashi had economically grown due to his control on five elements but society lost sensitivity and King's son involved in stealing without any realization of fault when questioned. King was extremely disappointed and was explained cause of insensitivity due to absence of Deva's by Lord Ganesha who appeared as Astrologer - Dhudiraj. After realizing Devdas worshipped Mahadev by forming a Shivling, which was blessed by Mahadev and named \"Devdasheswar Mahadev\".
shaktipeeth 52 Different body parts of sati fell down on earth after her body was destroyed by Sudershan Chakra. All parts were converted into pind and pran pratistha was done by Saptrishi, Markandey in presence of Mahadev so that Sati's soul gets free to take birth as Parvati. After marriage with Goddess Parvati, Mahadev had visited with her and worshipped in all 52 Shaktipeeth last hault at Kashi. Mahadev is present whenever Devi Parvati is worshipped in any Shaktipeeth. sabarimala Temple of Harihar Putra Lord Manikantan named Lord Ayappa by Mahadev. Aya means Vishnudev and Appa means Mahadev. Lord Ayappa was born by merging energies of Mahadev, and Vishnudev in Mohini form. This temple was constructed with support of Lord Vishwakarma and Deity of Lord Ayappa was created by Lord Parshuram. Mahdev granted boon that energy of Lord Ayappa will be present in Sabarimala to bless and protect devotees.

somnath - first jyotirling Somnath made by Chandrarev (Moon God) as he was relieved by Mahadev from decay due to curse of Prajapati Daksha. Mahadev had given shelter on his forehead with condition that decay will continue for every fortnight betwee Poornima and Amavasya and reform back between Amavasya and Poornima. Later Mahadev and Devi Parvati had done rituals here to grant additional boon here. Devotee doing Jal Abhishek wishing for heaven with pure heart, will get there. kashi vishwanath or vishweshar After death of Devi Sati, this Jyotirling was made by Mahadev himself with first Shaktipeeth. Vishwanath or Visheshwar means Lord of Universe and Kashi is ancient name of Varanasi hence named as Kashi Vishwanath. tryambakeshwar Rishi Gautam was blessed here. The pond impured by Rishi Gautam's enemies, was sanctified by creating Jyotirling with abhishekam done by new name of river Ganga as \" Godavari\" ujjain mahakaleshwar Mahadev had destroyed Tripur loka created by Tarakasur from here. This place is significant for Victory.
ghrishneshwar Mahadev had granted life to dead son of a sensitive devotee lady as she did not even agree to attend last ritual of her own son before completing Puja of Mahadev. This lady's son was killed by her own sister as she was first wife of same husband and was jealous of their good relationship. Mahadev was extremely pleased when devotee lady requested to forgive her killer sister and only remove jealousy from her. Nageshwar Lady demon Daruka was misusing boon of goddess Parvati and had taken Daruka forest in ocean and tried to do construction by torchering humans who depended only by chanting name of Lord without any other required effort. Mahadev clarifies the freedom of following any dharma to demon lady Daruka cautioning her not to misuse boon of Goddess Parvati. and significance of Karma to humans with slogan \"God helps them who help themselves. This Jyotirling is near Dwarka and it is said that Lord Krishna use to do Abhishekam here. rameshwar A Shivling was made and worshipped by Lord Rama, on way to war with Ravana. Mahadev personally appeared during worship and converted that into Jyotirling. It is very auspicious to do Abhishek of this Jyotirling with Gangajal.
mahakaleshwar This is only \"South Facing\" Jyotirling near Shipra river in Ujjain. Mahadev had killed demon Dooshan to save his sage devotee here. Anybody with pure mind and faith will get blessings of Mahadev. In this Jyotirling, Mahadev's energy will remain for ever. baidnath dham Raavan tried to take Mahadev in form of Shivling to Lanka, against wishes of u Mahadev's family & Tridev. Mahadev allowed to carry himself in form of Shivling on condition that if Raavan keeps Shivling on floor during travel, Mahadev will stay back there only. Lord Ganesha in form of Baiju, compelled Raavan to keep Shivling on floor in Deoghar. It was converted into Jyotirling by Mahadev. Malikarjun Only Jyotirling where Mahadev and Devi Parvati are jointly present. They both assured to visit this Jyotirling every Poornima & Amavasya. Lord Kartikeya's marriage was finalized here. Mahadev and Devi Parvati spent lot of time to convince Lord Kartikeya for being present in younger brother Lord Ganesha's marriage which was proposed and finalized prior to Kartikeya. Later situation changed as Brahmadev appeared and proposed her manas Putri Devsena for Lord Kartikeya.
Pratikeshwar Kapileshwar Kumareshwar Jyotirling Lord Kartikeya was under wrong impression that his parents Mahadev and Devi Parvati don't love him. This was due to sin committed unknowingly by killing Tarakasur who was demon but also Mahadev's devotee. Lord Vishnu suggested purification to Lord Kartikeya by worshipping Shiva Linga, made with stone by himself. Due to unpredictable confused behaviour of Lord Kartikeya, Mahadev tried to test him before allowing him to worship. In this process of testing, Lord Kartikeya had to make Shivling 3 times. After passing all tests, Mahadev was happy and converted all 3 to Jyotirlings. Anyone praying these Jyotirlings will be freed from sins and confusions of life.

Total 5 Shivlings were created by Devi Parvati with the help of Devi Ganga, Panchtatva Deva's and also of Vishnudev, to transcend the anger of Mahadev after he was dipped in sorrow and then in anger after reviving Devi Parvati from unconsciousness due to loss of energy during custody of Panchtatva Deva's by Arunasur. Devi Parvati had balanced all 5 tatva's in Universe during absence of Panchatatva Deva's. All Five Shivlings listed below were named by Vishnudev. Ekambareshwarar Mahadev of Prithvi tatva has special significance as was worshipped by Devi Parvati in form of Akhilandeshwari Devi. Jambukeshwarar Mahadev Signifies Jal tatva, located in Trichi-Tamilnadu Annamalaiyar Mahadev Signifies Agni tatva, located at base of Arunachala hill in b Thirunnamalai- Tamilnadu. sri kal hasteswar Mahadev Signifies Vayu tatva, located in Srikalhasti, Andhra Pradesh. chidambaram natrajan Mahadev Signifies Aakash tatva, located in town- Chitambaram, 78 km south of Pondicherry- Tamilnadu. ekambareshwar mahadev Signifies Prithvi tatva, located in Kanchipuram- Tamilnadu.

details of creation & 3 births of devi adishakti
Devi Adishakti was detached from Mahadev upon request of Brhamadev to support him in creating Universe. Due to this Adishakti lost her memory and Mahadev became recluse leaving responsibility of Tridev. Therefore Vishnudev and Brhamadev decided to create a new post of Prajapati to draw Code of Conduct and implementation on humans till return of Mahadev. Out of 2 Contestants- Rishi Angira and Daksh, post was granted to Daksha. His Rajyabhishek was done in presence of Vishnudev and Brhamadev who requested him to take blessings of Mahadev by doing Abhishek on Shivling. sati rahasya After Ceremony Brhamadev requested Prajapati Daksh to undergo penance of Devi Bhagwati to take birth as his daughter so that he can get her married with Mahadev and complete them both. Boon was granted to Daksh by Devi Bhagwati on condition that she would leave Daksh if disrespect anytime, and she was born as Sati. - In order to get Mahadev out of reclusion, Brahamadev attempted to draw his attention by criticizing Veda's from his fifth head but in return Mahadev beheaded and left Brhamadev with only four heads. - After knowing, Daksh became biggest enemy of Mahadev and excluded Mahadev's worship in Daksh Sanhita.
- As Devi Bhagwati had taken birth as Sati, Daksha Prajapati had kept a close watch so that she doesn't get to know about Mahadev anytime. - Rishi Angira requested Daksh Prajapati to send Sati to his kingdom for participating in Yagna but on way she was lost and happen to see Mahadev in forest. - Mahadev returned to Kailash in Recluse form and on request and support of Brhamadev and Vishnudev, he restored his energies to participate in responsibilities of Tridev. Devi Sati had noticed from distance, and was very confused. - After her return, Prajapti Daksh could guess about her meeting with Mahadev. Using all powers he performed Yagna and reversed time cycle to restart prior to Mahadev- Devi Sati's meeting and erased the memory of entire universe, for that period. - Mahadev was very lonely even after joining Tridev. Vishnudev somehow managed to invoke sensitivity in Mahadev towards world. - Devi Sati was repeatedly getting attracted to Mahadev and ultimately married Mahadev against willingness of her father. She had very troublesome married life as she was married to Mahadev before redeveloping herself to Adishakti level. - Prajapati Daksha had purposefully organized yagna to insult Mahadev by not inviting. Devi Sati forcibly went but couldn't tolerate insulting words of Daksha Prajapati and burnt herself by creating yogagni. - Mahadev was extremely angry and instructed Veerbhadra Dev
and Mata Bhadrakali to take disastrous step against Prajapati Daksha. Veerbhadra Dev ransacked empire of Prajapati and beheaded him. - Mahadev went to collect mortal remains of Devi Sati from Prajapati's palace. Upon repeated requests of Devi Prasuti, Mahadev fixed head of Goat and made Prajapati alive. - After creating 52 Shaktipeeth with mortal remains of Devi Sati, Mahadev went for long penance.
Other forms of devi adishakti
devi kali Whenever anger was invoked in Devi Parvati, she took form of Devi Kali to destroy evils. Agry Form (Ugra roop) of Devi Parvati. Mahadev had to take lots of efforts to bring down anger and normalize whenever Devi Kali form was taken by Devi Parvati. Few incidents are narrated below: a) Devi Kali had chopped Demon Raktabeej by not letting fall single drop of blood on floor. Raktabeej was granted boon to be killed by a female and his every drop of blood if falls on floor, would create another Raktabeej. As Devi's anger continued, Mahadev had to lie down on floor. After putting her leg on chest of Mahadev, Devi realized and her tongue came out. After this, Devi Parvati cursed herself not to be worshipped in front of Mahadev ever. b) Devi Kali Form was taken when her son in law was attacked by demons. As Devi's anger continued, Mahadev had taken form of a child and constantly cried to generate motherly feeling in Devi to calm her down. c) Devi Kali form was taken to attack Shivansh Andhak. Upon repeated apology, Mahadev forgave Andhak but Devi Kali remained extremely angry. After failing in all attempts, Mahadev took form of Aghori and controlled Devi by tantra. Devi calm down upto some extent and returned to Kailash but not in total normal state of mind. This tantra was later used by Aghori's to control Devi and misuse her powers.
d) After return, Mahadev cautioned everyone about Devi's mental state. Once Devi became jealous with Devi Ganga when she indicated her attachment with Mahadev. Out of anger She left Kailash and was captured by Aghori Devotees-Malha and Mani by same tantra used by Mahadev. They kept Devi confined in a Yantra, and misused her powers. This time Mahadev in form of Aghora, had to make another powerful Yantra worshipping at 4 places and set up in Akash Ganga so that she cannot be captured in any Yantra in future. Aghori Devotees Mallah and Mani repeatedly request Devi not to leave, but she left after assuring that only once she will come to help when they are in trouble. e) After releasing Devi, Aghora Mahadev was in war with Mallah and Mani. To fulfil commitment, Devi appeared in Kali Form and swallowed Mahadev. She further continued to swallow entire Universe. Lord Vishnu was called to calm her down after she dressed as widow. Devi realized and released Mahadev and all part of Universe swallowed earlier. Out of guilt, Devi refused to return Kailash before repentance and taken human birth as Mahlsa in Maharashtra. Mahadev had taken form of human Martand and married Devi Mahlsa after killing Aghori Mallah and Mani, who were attempting to capture Devi again. devi baghula makhi This form was taken, when Devi left Kailash out of anger on Devi Ganga. She killed 2 demons by taking this form, who were trying to overpower seeing her alone. This form of Devi is worshipped by Tantriks to control or damage enemies.

lORD kartikeya Also known as Lord Skanda. Elder son of Lord Shiva appointed as Commander in chief of Deva's to kill demon Tarkasur. Lord Kartikeya was trained by Mahadev to fight war. His mind used to remain unstable after killing Tarkasur as Taraksur was Mahadev's devotee also. He could be relieved after worshipping self made Shivalinga with guidance of Lord Vishnu with help of Lord Ganesha. Later shifted to South India to save that area from repeated attacks of demons and named \"Murugan\" there. He returned to Kailash after Vishwa Vijaya Abhiyan, after Lord Ganesh was born. dev sena Manas Putri of Lord Brhamadev married to Lord Kartikeya. Their marriage took place in Brahmalok and Devguru Brihaspati performed rituals of priest. ashok sundari Daughter of Lord Shiva & Parvati born in Kailash under Kalpataru. She realised significance of penance after meeting Kartikeya and went for it in very young age to get married to Nahush. She shared her feeling with Lord Shiva that tapa should be done in young age before opting for grihastha as followed. She was married to Nahush ji. nahush Prince whose prematurely grown beyond time zone by Devi Parvati to get married to Ashok Sundari. A demon was repeatedly attacking Nahush as demon was destined to be killed by Nahush after marrying Ashok Sundari. Later he was selected as Indradev by Saptarishi after death of Jalandhar.
veerbhadra Created by Mahadev out of anger from his Jata- hair after knowing Sati's death due to insult by Daksha Prajapati. Veerbhadra had 8 hands and was extremely powerful. He killed Daksha Prajapati after slottering his army. bhadra kali Created by Mahadev from his Jata to clear out confusion of Veerbhadra whether to encounter the weapon rope of Lord Vishnu, when he came to rescue Daksha. kaal bhairav Created by Mahadev to protect all Shaktipeeths Veerbhadra and Bhadrakali were Ingla and Pingla Nadi of Lord Shiva. sudarshan chakra Its the kundalini shakti of Lord Vishnu and used as his main weapon. nandi Nandi was bull and most loved Devotee of Mahdev. Lord Kartikeya used to practice techniques of war with Nandi. Mahadev granted him boon that any prayer made in Nandy's year will reach Mahadev directly.

lord vinayaka Devi Parvati was feeling lonely when Mahadev and Ashok Sundari went for long penance. She created Vinayak with turmeric paste applied and removed from her body. Due to adamant attitude, Vinayak was beheaded by Mahadev. Later another head of Elephant Gajasur was fixed on Vinayak. Gajasur was granted boon by Mahadev to become most intelligent with chance to leave in Kailash with him, so this served the purpose. important facts - Ganesh ji was granted boon by Lord Vishnu to be most intelligent. -Immediately after his head was changed, auspiciousness covered entire universe. -Once Lord Parshuram was stopped by Lord Ganesh, when he tried to meet Mahadev in middle of Meditation. Lord Parshuram had attacked with his weapon \"Parshu\" given by Mahadev but Lord Ganesh didn't try to stop as respect to his father's weapon and his left tooth was broken, due to which he is known as \"Ekdanta\". Lord Parshuram realized his mistake and granted him boon to write a very important scripture by his broken tooth. - Lord Ganesha is accepted to be worshipped first by all Hindu communities. Once there was a controversy for this position. A competition was organized by Mahadev with condition to complete 3 rounds of earth. All gods including Sun, Air participated. Lord Ganesha tried to compensate for all gods, to keep balance in Universe and he took 3 rounds of his parents considering them earth. This selfless attitude made him to be worshipped first.
-Lord Ganesh had touched Supari when he was worshipped first in his sister Ashok Sundari's marriage. After this Supari is also being worshipped as Ganesha by Hindus. - Lord Ganesh had helped Mahadev in getting back partially lost memory of Devi Parvati. Mahadev acted as Adiyogi and Lord Ganesha as Bal Yogi. Due to sincere effort of Lord Ganesh, Mahadev was pleased and given him name \"Nattesh\". -Lord Ganesha was married to daughter's of Prajapati Vishwaroop- Siddhi and Buddi. In return Daksha Prajapati cursed Sage Narada to remain mobile entire life without any permanent shelter. ahilya Daughter of Brahmadev married to Rishi Gautam. She was cursed by Rishi Gautam to become stone as Lord Indra had disturbed her purity in unethical manner by taking form of Rishi Gautam.
