SPARKLING of the year WINNER THE ORORA GLASS TROPHY Bream Creek Vineyard Tasmania Blanc de Blanc 2015 WINEMAKER: Liam McElhinney COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: This wine shines with a bright straw / gold in the glass. A complex bouquet of white stone fruit, almond croissant and Meyer Lemon is supported by a palate that is both rich and balanced, showcasing lime pith, green apple, lemon sorbet and yellow peach. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Tasmanian smoked salmon blinis or roast Marion Bay Chicken with Tasmanian truffle. CELLARING: 2021-2030. VITICULTURE: Bream Creek Vineyard is planted on a north-east ridge overlooking Marion Bay and the Tasman Sea on Tasmania’s east coast. This combination of a gently sloping site, coastal location and maritime influence provides optimal ripening conditions for premium quality grapes. The long, mild seasons feature cool frost-free springs, long sunny summer days with gentle sea breezes to moderate the summer heat and an extended autumn ripening period to enhance flavour development. Soils are deep and range from brown to black clay loams with a little small stone on the higher ground. All vines are vertical-shoot positioned, with most of the management, including pruning and picking, done by hand. With both small berries and quite small bunches, the very modest yields enhance the typical varietal characters – perfect for truly cool climate winemaking. The chardonnay grapes for this wine were drawn from D Block, located at the bottom/eastern side of the vineyard. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Produced in the traditional Champenoise method from 100% chardonnay grapes and aged for over 5 years on lees. Alcohol: 12.5% Dosage: 3.5g/L TA: 7.6g/L Disgorgement date: 1-2 June 2021 Use of oak: Nil – stainless steel ferment to preserve freshness. Time on lees: 5 years 9 months (from September 2015 to June 2021). SAUVIGNON BLANC of the year WINNER THE REES HOTEL (NZ) TROPHY Yealands Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2021 WINEMAKER: Natalie Christensen COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Pale lemon. Lifted notes of blackcurrant bud, passionfruit, guava and sweet pea, underpinned with citrus notes. A generous palate with pure, concentrated fruit flavours balanced by a deliciously long, crisp mineral finish. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Enjoy with seafood such as prawns, mussels or fish. CELLARING: Enjoy now, or cellar up to 2 years. VITICULTURE: The 2021 harvest was our earliest on record. There were late spring frosts in Marlborough and some challenging weather over the flowering period, which resulted in moderate crops throughout the region. These moderate crops, coupled with a warm and stable end to the growing season, set us up for an early start with stunning fruit. We had clear warm days throughout March, so we could pick at our leisure, without any pressure from the elements. The resulting wine is showing the wonderful hallmarks that our Awatere vineyards are known for – highly concentrated fruit flavours, with underlying purity and minerality. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Carefully selected parcels of sauvignon blanc from our Seaview vineyard in the Awatere Valley were used to create this wine. The perfect weather conditions allowed the fruit to be harvested with ideal ripeness and flavour. At the winery the fruit was gently pressed, and juice settled to remove solids. The clear juice underwent fermentation in various temperature controlled stainless steel tanks using a range of selected yeasts to capture and enhance the wine’s varietal characters. The wine was then blended, stabilised and filtered in preparation for bottling. CHARDONNAY of the year WINNER THE SMEG TROPHY Church Road Grand Reserve Hawke's Bay Chardonnay 2019 WINEMAKER: Chris Scott COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Pale straw. A fuller bodied chardonnay balanced by gentle, fresh acidity and a spine of slate-like minerality. Fresh zesty citrus and citrus blossom notes are to the fore this year with riper, richer stonefruit underlying and providing extra depth. The fruit is overlaid with complexities of roasted nuts, toasted brioche, and a wisp of struck flint and gun smoke. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: Great with a range of seafoods including richer dishes such as scallops or crayfish. It also works well with poultry dishes and lighter game meats. CELLARING: Should mature gracefully for 6 or more years from vintage date. VITICULTURE: Grown predominantly in the Tuki Tuki Valley, a cooler sub region well exposed to afternoon sea breezes. Clay soils with a hard calcareous clay pan, derived from limestone outwash. Fruit from this sub region retains good freshness and acidity along with a mineral edge that brings another dimension to the wines, trained to two cane VSP. We employed extensive shoot and fruit thinning, along with bunch positioning, declumping, close canopy trimming and some removal of leaf through the fruit zone, to ensure a balanced, evenly spaced and well exposed crop. Soil moisture was monitored regularly to regulate a deficit drip irrigation programme. This keeps the vines in a functioning yet low vigour state that promotes optimal ripening and concentration. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: Hand-harvested and hand sorted, the fruit was gently whole bunch pressed directly to French oak barriques without any clarification or additions. Wild primary and malolactic fermentation. 30% new oak was used to aid to further enhance the depth of the wine without dominating the fruit. The wine was matured on full yeast lees in barrel approximately 11 months with only occasional yeast lees stirring. To avoid any unnecessary stripping effect, the wine was unfined and only lightly filtered for clarity prior to bottling. COP166663 A helping hand in crafting fine wines In the modern, dynamic wine industry the hand crafting of great wines is often overlooked. Whilst only 2% of the world’s wines are made using new oak barrels, a high proportion of the ‘great wines’ of the world are handcrafted in them. For almost two centuries the cooperages of the Tonnellerie François Frères Group have been producing barrels for these wines. The TFF Group has evolved from humble beginnings to now having its brands internationally recognised throughout the wine world. Through its Demptos Research Centre at the University of Bordeaux, it has over the last 20 years quantified the science to explain why new oak barrels provide that added dimension to allow very good fruit to realise its full potential. Classic Oak, on behalf of the TFF Group, is proud to lend a helping hand to the premium programs of many Australian and New Zealand producers. GRENACHE of the year WINNER THE HENSON LLOYD TROPHY Z Wine [AUGUST] Barossa Valley Grenache 2020 WINEMAKER: Janelle Zerk COLOUR, BOUQUET, PALATE: Medium cherry red. Cherry, strawberry and Turkish delight aromas are balanced with trademark gamey, earthy, violet & floral notes. Musk & white pepper aromatics are also intermingled in the bouquet & are important drivers in lifting and enhancing the fruit aromatics. Silky tannins with some earthy complexity enhance the beautiful ripe red fruit characters. The white pepper and cinnamon spice add subtle complexity to an otherwise deliciously drinkable wine. Turkish delight flavours linger on the finish. FOOD SUGGESTIONS: My absolute favourite food pairing with the [AUGUST] Grenache is peking duck – the red fruit, gaminess and spicy/peppery characters of the wine are so complementary of each other… but the truth is, good grenache doesn’t need to be paired with food and will go with just about anything! CELLARING: Short to medium term cellaring is recommended, but in the right cellaring conditions, the [AUGUST] Grenache has the potential to absolutely shine in 15 years. VITICULTURE: The 2020 [AUGUST] Old Vine Grenache is a blend of some of our absolute favourite blocks from the best soils the Barossa has to offer for this variety. The majority of fruit is grown in sand over ironstone which helps control the vigour of the vine and amplify flavours. The blend includes a percentage of hand pruned and picked bush vine grenache that is nearly 100 years old, but the components are chosen on impact and freshness of fruit which form the nucleus to this divine wine. VINIFICATION & MATURATION: The pristine grapes are fermented in old open cement vats and include a percentage of whole bunches. The wine is swiftly transferred into oak and only ‘breathes in' the seasoned wood for approximately 3-4 months before bottling. The wine making is simplistic, as the complexity comes from the fruit sourcing and blending.
