When a cattle rancher and a teacher-turned stay-at-home mom with three young children (and one on the way) boarded a plane to enter the mission field in XXXXXXXXXXXXX, it could only be described as an act of Crazy, Faithful Obedience On May 8, 2019, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (and one of their daughters and sons-in-law) waited anxiously to get through customs in a XXXXX airport. XXXXXXXXXXX, who had been serving as mission workers in that country for more than two decades, were returning after an unexpected visit to the U.S. for a family funeral. When they departed XXXXXXXXX the month before, XXXXXXXX noted that immigration control had given his passport a special code. This concerned them because other mission workers who had recently been kicked out of that country had received the same code. But the authorities allowed him to re-enter the country, and the couple breathed a sigh of relief. Seconds later, the officials shouted at XXXXXX to come back. He was arrested and deported to XXXXXX the following morning. And XXXX, still grieving the loss of her mother during their trip to the U.S., was left to pick up the pieces and figure out how to move forward. This part of the couple’s story might sound like something from a movie filled with international intrigue. But it’s really the thing that happened nearly 26 years before – at their home in XXXXXXXX, Kansas, – that’s the most remarkable part of their journey. XXXXXXX was a third-generation cattle rancher and farmer. XXXXXX (a Topeka native) had been a teacher but was now a stay-at-home mom to their two young girls. They were active in their church. He taught a Sunday school class, and she led women’s ministry. Although their church was mission-minded, neither of them gave a thought to entering the field. continued SEPTEMBER 2020 • CONNECT 3

While translating a sermon for a Topeka pastor who was visiting Brazil, Arnon Batista had no idea that the brief encounter would lead to The Internship of a Lifetime An intern hosted this summer by Topeka Bible Church hopes to soon take the lessons and blessings from our church and share them with the world. Arnon Batista, a 26-year old from the city of Manaus in the Amazon region of northwest Brazil, worked at TBC this summer under the mentorship of lead pastor Jim Congdon. The connection between the Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) student and the Topeka church was cemented four years ago during a TBC short-term outreach in Brazil. But the seeds were planted many years earlier. Unfortunate circumstances and a stubborn attitude eventually led Arnon to the many blessings he is now receiving. When his parents divorced when he was 10 years old, Arnon’s performance at school took a nosedive. To his displeasure, his mother enrolled him in a bilingual international school, where he would be forced to learn English to survive. Arnon resisted until one day he and his Portuguese-speaking classmates were told that they would most certainly score worse than the two native English speakers in the class on some standardized tests. Suddenly motivated by the perceived affront, he applied himself to his studies and scored extremely high on the tests, prompting his teachers to view their stubborn pupil in a different light. At 18, Arnon was set to study engineering in college, but found himself challenged by Romans 12:1-2 to consider a career in ministry. He enrolled at Cariri Baptist Seminary, where he met Janet Roudybush continued SEPTEMBER 2020 • CONNECT 11

He’s continuing to write your story. The headline, “Victory, my weapon is a melody.” During a crazy time, when anxiety and fear can become crippling, we move our focus to the victory that Jesus won for all eternity. The lyrics in this battle anthem remind us that God is calling us to praise Him in our storms. We sing louder and louder as we remember who He is in the middle of our circumstances. When we pause to make our weapon a melody of praise, Heaven comes to fight for us. Maybe you are looking for hope, for joy, for peace. Maybe the enemy has something that belongs to you. Reclaim it! All you have to do is raise a hallelujah. – Jeremiah Devine Only Jesus - It’s a constant reminder to me over the past couple years to focus on humbly glorifying Christ and his name in a world that encourages us to make a name for ourselves and build our own reputations. – Moriah Day 14 CONNECT • SEPTEMBER 2020

Yes I Will - I love these lyrics because although we live in uncertain times, there is one thing we can ALWAYS count on, GOD! He is unchanging, everlasting and constant. “In the waiting, The same God who’s never late, is working all things out.” I love that it reminds us to bless HIS name even in the lowest valley and even when our hearts are heavy, He is there. The bridge reminds us we get to CHOOSE to praise and glorify HIS name…“That NOTHING can stand against.” So in this season of uncertainties, confusion and opinions YES, I WILL choose to praise my God because He is bigger, stronger, and greater than all things of this world. – Amanda Devine Great Are You Lord - Fighting for Me - I love Even with everything this song so much going on around us because I’m a single that we can’t mom and it gives me control we know our peace of mind and God is Great and gives hope that God is fighting us breath and life and is worthy of for me on the hard days. praise! He is our light in the darkness! – Dave Packard – Maria Ortiz Rattle - It is a reminder of how powerful our God is and that He will move as He sees fit in my life despite all the chaos in the world around me. It reminded me of the man who was dead but when he was thrown on Elisha’s bones he came back to life. – Linda Limon Peace Be Still - As a musician, I adore being a part of the creation of music. “Be still and know that I am God ...” is a verse that has always seemed nice to me, yet completely out of my reach. To those who know me best, I am anything but still (I’m a drummer). When I heard the song Peace Be Still for the first time, I literally stopped what I was doing to listen (and cry). It was as if the artist and lyrics were able to speak directly to my soul: the parts that were anxious and unable to rest. It is that powerful of a song to me. I know it was the Holy Spirit reaching me in a way that He knew I was able to respond ... musically. – Becca Livgren SEPTEMBER 2020 • CONNECT 15

She felt God calling her to get back to working with kids. She served one year with the fourth grade girls in Awana, and the following year became a Sparks director. “One of the times when I’ve seen the largest impact is when I go for a walk with a child, talking with them, helping them give it up to God through prayer,” Destiny said. “Seeing through their eyes their absolute trust in what God can do. Some may wonder how she has the time to juggle working full time, working on her master’s degree, and being so involved in ministry. “When you consider the things you’re spending time on, make sure you find time that you’re serving others and serving God,” Destiny said. “Don’t let busy-ness be the reason you’re not taking the opportunity to serve, because you won’t regret doing it.”
