STYLE Little Giraffe I was gifted a Little Giraffe blanket from their LOVE collection at my baby shower and it’s one of my favorites to use with my little girl. A buttery soft, gray fabric, with white polka dots. I’m always receiving compliments on it. Quality is what stands out about Little Giraffe throughout all of their products. STYLE JaLanbele “ THERE IS SOMETHING CATHARTIC ABOUT CREATING AND WORKING WITH ” YOUR HANDS. Label Jane was born during an extremely difficult time for 27-year-old Jordan Gray. She needed to feel joy, normalcy and like herself again. She found comfort in retreating to her studio to design and play with her fabrics. She knew then, it was the perfect time to start Label Jane. “I knew it would help me in my journey of healing.” Designing exclusively with vintage materials and trims, Jordan aims to create “wearable works of art.” However, working with vintage doesn’t go without its many challenges, most notably limited stock. But that doesn’t slow Jordan down. “I enjoy the challenge of finding and working with these materials and their one of a kind nature of them.”
Are you a self-taught designer? Did you attend any BRANDSschooling? Tell me a little bit about your backgroundin fashion design.J: I have been sketching and designing clothing since Iwas 11. My mom taught me to sew around this time. Evenat that age, I felt confident I wouldn’t be happy doinganything other than designing. I was enrolled for Appar-el Design and Production and I let my career counselortalk me out of it before my freshman semester started. Ihave always regretted it! I ended up graduating with anApparel Merchandising degree which is more focused onthe business, marketing and merchandising side of fash-ion and less focused on the technical side. However, nowrunning my own business, my degree is actually provingto be veryWhat are your favorite materials to work with andwhy?J: Vintage silk crepe and chenille. Silk crepe has anamazing drape and the colors are usually so vibrant. Itotally geek out over vintage chenille. The variety andtextures are insane! I have actually gasped out loud a fewtimes upon finding a particularly beautiful pattern.What/who inspires your designs?J: My materials seem to take on a life of their own whenthey’re all sitting out in my studio. I never sketch or de-sign right away. I always source first to start the creativeprocess. I purchase whatever appeals to me or excites mein some way. The rarer, the older, the more luxurious - thebetter. When I have my materials in hand, that is whenpieces just start coming together. It’s an exhilarating ex-perience to be in the zone and facilitating what seems likematerials just coming together on their own. I also love touse my own closet as a jumping off point.What is the most difficult part of this business?J: The balance between being the wife and mom I striveto be while also running a business. I am getting fasterand more efficient as I become more familiar with themarket and how I tend to work best. Creating a plan ofattack and staying in a routine has been very helpful.How do you unwind from being a mother and de-signer?J: My relationship with the Lord is what keeps me saneand gives my life deep meaning and satisfaction. It’s im-portant to me that I spend time every day with Him torecharge and keep perspective.
