ELPA NEWSLETTER n. 1/2016ELPA President Tatjana Reic and ELPA VicePresident Ivan Gardini met theEuropean Commissioner for Health VytenisAndriukaitis European Parliament 11 JanuaryThe European Commissioner for Health, VytenisAndriukaitis, met Tatjana Reic and Ivan Gardini todiscuss future EU policies regarding hepatitis C andalcohol. The Commissioner recognized the opportunityto eradicate HCV and discussed possible strategies tobe taken within the limits of EU competence. It was avery fruitful meeting planned for 30 minutes but itlasted more than one hour.The Commissioner invited ELPA to the ChronicDiseases Conference, which will take place on 21stApril in Brussels, where there will be the opportunity tofurther discuss chronic liver diseaseand hepatitis C.

APASL 2016: Viral Hepatitis Policy SymposiumTokio – 16th FebruaryThis year the World Health Organization’sStrategy on the Elimination of Viral Hepatitisis likely to be adopting a list of ambitious targetsfor 2020 and 2030 and the overall goal of theelimination of viral hepatitis as a public healththreat by 2030.Tatjana Reic, on behalf of ELPA, was invited tospeak about “What means to Europe theinclusion of hepatitis within the SDGs”. Herpresentation focused on the broad and deepwork ELPA did with other organizations in orderto reach the WHO 2014 Resolution on Hepatitisand HCV Summit and Manifesto in Brussels.

HCV EU POLICY SUMMITBrussels 17th FebruaryELPA took an active role during the high level meeting atthe HCV EU Policy Summit in Brussels. A key notespeech was delivered by Vytenis Andriukaitis,Commissioner for Health and Food Safety at the EUCommission. The introductory remarks were also held by ELPA President, reminding on Hepatitis C relatedhealthcare costs such as liver cirrhosis or liver cancerwhich frequently require a liver transplantation and socialcosts (like working days, career, and Country’s economy).After she focused on what still needs to be done: makeinnovative treatments affordable, make concrete plans toreach out specific risk groups and increase diagnosis rateefficiently and effectively, find new strategies to prevent andavoid infection and reinfection. To conclude, Tatjana Reic askedfor acommitment which is still lacking and she proposed aDublin Declaration for Hepatitis C.of body text

HCV EU POLICY SUMMITBrussels 17th FebruaryDuring the first session, another ELPA member, ourpolicy expert, Achim Kautz, presented the key elementsof a successful elimination strategy from a patientperspective.This first EU HCV Policy Summit wasorganised by the Hepatitis B and C Public PolicyAssociation in partnership with European Association forthe Study of the Liver (EASL), the European LiverPatient Association (ELPA) and the Correlation Network.During this Summit, the The Hepatitis C EliminationManifesto was presented.

HCV 2020 Forum 2016: accelerating actionBarcelona 2nd 4th March.The HCV2020 forum gathered together important stakeholders, including policymakers, health care professionals and patient advocates, to share progressbeing made in addressing hepatitis C.Through the promotion and sharing ofbest practices and a focus on prevention, early detection, andclinical management of patients, participants contributed towards advancingthe control and cure of hepatitis C. Tatjana Reic, representing ELPA, waschairing the plenary session IV: “Good practices at micro level across thewhole HCV pathway: preventing and early detection”, during the forum.Theresult of HCV 2020 was HCV HUB Planning and Implementation launched bythe University of Deusto, as a tool to support knowledge transfer andmutual learning among various countries and stakeholders as well as a supportforrecommendations any stakeholder can contribute towardsadvancing the control and cure of HCV. The first HCV2020 Forum was held on October 2014,1st and 2nd, in Oxford, UK, hosted by Oxford University.Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board

Highlight underserved for screening, prevention andtreatment of viral hepatitis B and C in Europe. Ljubljana – 10th 11th MarchThe Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board (VHPB) comprises anumber of advisors, honorary members who are the topstakeholders in the world of Hepatitis. ELPA as member ofthe VHPB, represented by Tatjana Reic, opened themeeting in Ljubljana together with Mojca Maticic.The board discussed on the following objectives: identifythe undertreated groups for screening, prevention andtreatment; best practices from other countries related toexisting models to reach undertreated groups, improvescreening, prevention and treatment; discuss strategies toimprove access for hard to reach and undertreated groupstowards screening/diagnosis/treatment programs andimmunization programs. Finally, identifychallenges for research and advocacy for these groups. Formore info visit: www.vhpb.org

Add aEnhancing Value in European Health Systems: Improving OutcomeEuropean Parliament 15th MarchELPA took also an active role in this crossparty initiative which launched a newmultistakeholder vision document on \"Enhancing Value in European HealthSystems: the role of outcomes measurement\". The document focuses on therelationship between the ageing populations and the legacy of economic crisiswhich are confronting health systems across Europe withunprecedented challenges and a strong focus on health outcomes, to improvequality of care for patients and strengthen public health interventions.Kangaroo GroupEuropean Parliament 16th MarchELPA participated to the breakfast panel debate which took place on Wednesday, 16 March in the European Parliament,Restaurant des Députés/ salon privé. The title of the meeting was: “Transparentprices versus confidential agreements: What’s best for patient access andsustainable healthcare?” little bit of body text

Add a little bit of bodEuropean Patient Forum (EPF) ­Annual General Assembly Brussels – 22nd and 23rd MarchTatjana Reic on behalf of ELPA and as a member of EPF,was invited to the annual general meeting, held on 22nd –23rd of March in Brussels. The AGM provided members theopportunity to share their experiences and views and reflecton EPF’s development and their role therein.The AGA wasdivided in the following five parts: Patient Empowerment,Mental health and Partnerships, Governance, Networkingand Matchmaking, Building further our capacity as patientleaders. For further info: www.epf.org.y text

Recruiting patients for clinical trial22nd March IsraelPatient Organizations are the contact point between patients and clinical trials, motivatingpatients toparticipate and helping doctors with comprehensive explanations.Our ELPA member, Julio Burman said: “when it comes to evaluate patient feelings andbarriers, patients organizations can contribute to this mission, making the balancebetween risks and benefits”. Burman calls for a “partnership between Doctors, PatientOrganizations and Companies for a win­win result”.ELPA President, General Manager and Public Affairs Director Meeting in SplitSplit 29­31 MarchTatjana Reic (president) and the newly appointed Thomas Szekely (General Manager)and Livia Alimena (Public Affairs Director) met in the office in Split last March to analyseall the important work ELPA has being doing so far and to discuss next priorities andpossible strategies.
