yaxleyhub Yaxley Countryside Volunteers Spring is just around the corner and YCV have been busy over the winter getting bird boxes ready and bulbs planted. Many birds will be checking out potential nesting sites so now is the time to be putting up new boxes and making sure existing boxes are ready. YCV currently maintain around thirty nest and bat boxes in the village. We check the boxes during the non-breeding season and look for use and damage. Boxes are cleaned out and if any are damaged, we will take them away for repair or replacement. A high percentage of the boxes are used for nesting and even as sites for hibernation by butterflies. Some of the boxes have shown signs of woodpecker predation and these are replaced by stronger reinforced boxes. We are also finding that man-made materials are finding their way into the boxes e.g., pieces of plastic or string which the birds have picked up to use as nesting material. YCV have planted over three thousand bulbs this year with the help of funding for bulbs from the Parish Council. We have planted bulbs in several sites including the Community Orchard, along the bank in the Recreation ground and at Pound Lane Pond. We have planted a variety of species so that some should be seen from February through to April. As well as brightening up the village in spring they also provide a habitat and food source for local wildlife. yaxleyhub Slash your bills with these brilliant gadgets The little buys that can make a really big difference With the price of gas and electricity currently in orbit, the cost of living seems to be soaring ever upwards – but with a few well-chosen buys you can make a big difference to your energy bills. And you don’t need to spend a fortune either, so these gadgets will pay for themselves very quickly. The best place to start is your central heating system. If you don’t have a smart thermostat, or worse, if you don’t have a thermostat at all, you’re probably paying to heat empty rooms or to keep the heat on longer than necessary. There are lots of smart thermostats to choose from, but one of the friendliest is the Hive from British Gas. It connects to your heating and you can use its remote control, smart speaker or phone/tablet app to set schedules, and if you use the app it can tell your heating when you’re leaving or coming home and set the heating accordingly. We installed one a couple of years ago and it made a big difference to our gas bill. Lighting accounts for a lot of our energy use too, so if you haven’t already moved to LED bulbs you really should. For example, if you have a downlighter with halogen GU10 bulbs, swapping them for LEDs would reduce their energy consumption by as much as 90%: a 5W LED emits the same light as a 50W halogen bulb. And if you’ve been thinking about getting smart bulbs, they’re all LED too. Don’t forget about the kitchen either. Your hob and oven use a lot of energy, and there are often much more efficient options: a 900W microwave uses a fraction of the energy for a fraction of the time. But of course you can’t microwave everything, which is why many of us are buying Instant Pots or air fryers. gazettehealth&wellbeing GET BEAUTIFUL, NATURAL LOOKING BROWS THIS VALENTINES THROUGH THE POWER OF SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP There is nothing that enhances beauty like perfectly shaped eyebrows. Designed to compliment your features, semi-permanent makeup can add shape, definition and enhance your natural beauty whilst at the same time remaining so natural that only a trained eye will know you've had your brows done. Semi-permanent eyebrows restore the brows you once had or amplify the brows you currently have, while also providing a remarkable overall lift to your entire face. What is semi-permanent make-up? Semi-permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattoo using very delicate and skilled techniques to implant pigment in such a way that it looks natural and fades gradually to allow for subtle changes to be made to adapt to the changes your face and skin goes through over time. How long does semi-permanent makeup last? Semi-permanent tattoos and microblading generally last from 12 to 24 months, although depending on the individual it can last longer. It depends on several factors such as the skin's exposure to weather, ink application, natural skin cell rejuvenation or by using certain skincare products. All semi- permanent makeup will eventually require a top-up. Does it hurt? A numbing cream is applied to the area prior to your eye tattoo procedure which should make the whole process relatively painless. Some people with sensitivity or a lower pain threshold may find the procedure mildly uncomfortable, but generally most clients experience little or no pain. Why should I consider semi-permanent makeup? Semi-permanent makeup gives you the freedom of not having to draw your eyebrows on every morning. If you are short on time, prefer more of a natural makeup look or even struggle with your eyesight when applying makeup then it is the perfect solution for you. However, if you are concerned about letting your pet out, you might be thinking about buying a harness and talking your cat for a walk. It may be possible if you start this when they are a kitten, but it’s really not recommended for the following reasons. Cats are naturally cautious and want to explore at a pace that feels right and safe for them. They will want to be able to hide, run away or avoid potential threats without restriction. Cats are naturally very attached to their home and need to feel they always have access to this. Being taken on a lead takes them into new territory and prevents them from being able to access their own space. If the lead is dropped or they escape their harness it is unlikely they will return to you, especially when they are scared. Cats are more likely to bolt in order to reach a place of safety and will be at risk from cars on the road as well as other threats. Dogs have a high chase drive and, if they see a cat, may try to run after them. Being on a lead or harness makes your cat vulnerable to all sorts of dangers like this that they would naturally avoid. Rather than using a harness and leash to provide access to the outdoors, the RSPCA recommends providing your cat an enclosed outdoor space with cat-proof fencing. There are a number of things that you can do. Give your spouse/civil partner 10% of your Personal Allowance. If your taxable income is below the Personal Allowance (currently £12,570) and your spouse/civil partner is a basic rate taxpayer, you can transfer up to 10% of your Personal Allowance which could save them tax of up to £252. You can also backdate the claim to include any tax year from 5 April 2018 onwards, provided you both met the criteria in the relevant year. You could make a wedding gift. There are longstanding Inheritance Tax exemptions for gifts on marriage/civil partnership still available. The exemption ensures gifts of up to £1,000 per couple are immediately exempt from Inheritance Tax. This amount is increased to £2,500 for gifts to grandchildren and £5,000 for gifts to children. If you’re thinking of transferring assets to your beloved, wait until you’re married. Transfers of assets (such as shares or property) between spouses/civil partners are free from Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax, but if an asset is transferred before marriage/civil partnership, the normal tax rules apply. You can contribute to your spouse/civil partner’s pension. Pension Relief has been restricted for high earners, but you can contribute to your spouse/civil partner’s pension, although any tax relief belongs to them. For taxpayers with no ‘relevant earnings’ the maximum pension contribution that can be made in tax year is £2,880 net (£3,600 gross). There are many different options for charitable gifts, such as sponsorships, animal adoptions, etc. Not only can this be a more meaningful gift, but you can also claim Gift Aid relief on the donation, which means the charity gets an extra 25% from the Government. Higher or additional rate taxpayers can claim further tax relief from HM Revenue & Customs, so you should also consider who makes the donation to maximise the relief. Gift aid donations are also flexible. The relief on a donation can be carried back to use in the previous tax year, provided that the donation is made prior to the submission of the tax return, and that return is submitted by the due date i.e. The relief on donations made in the period from 6 April 2022 to 31 January 2023 could potentially be used to reduce the tax liability of the tax year ended 5 April 2022, depending on when that return was submitted. If you have made Gift Aid donations in the past and not claimed further tax relief, a claim can be made for up to four years after the year in which the donation was made. For example, relief for a donation made in 2021/22 can be claimed up to 5 April 2026.
