SAIL urs is a hi-tech world. Whereas in years past we fully expected our High Stakes Sailing technological devices High Stakes Sailing to last several years, today we are no longer surprised when after mere months they are declared obsolete and replaced with others that are gifted with functions we never dreamed of. So why should sailing be any different? Mike Rowley Indeed it’s not. It wasn’t just the and accusations of cheating. narrow margin of victory and the way in which it all came down to the f￿nal day that made this race such a nail biter, however, it was how the odds seemed stacked against the defenders early in the race. Team New Zealand came into the race hot, having just won the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup less than two weeks earlier, and with it the right to challenge for the America’s Cup. The crew was f￿t and working together like a well-oiled machine, and the boat was blisteringly fast. By comparison, and despite a major f￿nancial advantage over the challengers, along with a shore crew that was twice as large and which included consultants from Boeing, Oracle Team USA was the favourite to win on paper only and by the narrowest of margins. Yet win it did and in spectacular fashion. When stakes run high, so do tempers, and hot on the heels of the team’s stunning victory came cries of “foul” and accusations of cheating, but when the waters had quieted and the facts were laid bare, it was clear that nothing untoward had contributed 152 legacyinspires.com

Apparently, in Oracle parlance “regroup” is a synonym for “reinvent,” because the boat that took to the water two days later, for race 6, was very different indeed. Much like Formula 1 racing, these high tech yachts employ telemetry to send vast amounts of data back to the shore team for analysis. How vast, you ask? During the race, some 3,000 variables were recorded ten times a second. Of course all the data in the world is worthless unless it’s effectively analysed and finds its way back into and onto the boat in the form of improvements. That’s precisely what Oracle did in the two days between races 5 and 6. Using its own data, analysing the performance of the challenger boat, and testing out miniscule adjustments on virtual models, run through a supercomputer, team mathematicians, engineers and designers were able to make the adjustments necessary to put Oracle back into the running. As skipper Jimmy Spithill put it, “The data collection and what we do with it is one of the most important things in this game.” The boat returned to racing with the only observable adjustment being a substantially shorter bowsprit. Not apparent to the naked eye, yet no less important, were additional adjustments made to the boat’s foils and wing. Although controversy ensued, it must be mentioned here that contrary to the claims of the team’s detractors, the race committee did in fact green-light all of these modif￿cations. A race win followed, and another after that, but the faster boat was more diff￿cult to handle and the Kiwis clinched another two victories thereafter, putting the “auld mug” as the trophy is called, within just one more victory’s reach for them. However, it was not to be. As Oracle’s resourceful shore crew 153

SAIL worked around the clock to transform data into modif￿cations on a daily basis, the boat crew stepped up their game and put in a f￿awless performance to win the next eight races, and the title. APPARENT WIND Not unique to the Oracle boat, but characteristic of both AC72 yachts used in the last America’s Cup, and indeed all rapidly moving bodies, is the phenomenon of “apparent wind.” Simply put, this is a combination of the environmental or true wind and the wind created by the boat’s motion. Combine these and you have apparent wind, which is always felt on the nose of the boat. Sir Ben Ainslie, the British f￿ve-times Olympic sailing medal winner – four of them gold – and Oracle’s tactician for races th 6 – 19 in the 34 America’s Cup, described it as such, “The deal now with apparent wind is so much more relevant with these boats because they are so fast and we are creating our own wind, so we are basically sailing upwind all of the time.” Emirates Team New Zealand’s skipper, Dean Barker had this to say about apparent wind: “You always have the wind coming towards you – doesn’t matter if you’re going upwind or downwind. If you haven’t got it coming towards you, then you’re not sailing the boat particularly well. It changes the whole game completely.” 154 legacyinspires.com

But no more... Today you can own your own seaplane thanks to aircraft makers, Icon, with their new A5. It’s a small price tag up to only $250,000.00 or a base price of $189,000. But lets gain some perspective here – it’s a PLANE. With its carbon f￿bre exterior, easy controls (yes you can learn to operate it in less time than it takes to drive to Cape Town and back), you will be able to hitch a ride to just about anywhere because of its ability to take off and land on both land and water. And if you wanted to do it in Bond style you can always trigger its oversized parachute and f￿oat softly to the ground on your favourite deserted island of course. 158 legacyinspires.com

FLY David Moffat First Officer, Airbus 319 David Moffat completed a Bachelor of Aviation degree in Australia just after he finished school. He completed his Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence and was thereafter offered immediate employment. David spent six years building his experience throughout the East Coast of Australia including regional charter and Regular Public Transport operations on a Saab 340 turbo-propeller aircraft. His most recent adventure has taken him to the island of Mauritius as a First Officer on the Airbus. He says that the most memorable thing about his career thus far is the people he has been able to fly with. At home, David is a loving father to two children, “A boy and a girl, they are cats! It’s easy to let aviation consume your entire life. I try hard to do anything I can to take my mind off work, and keep as busy as I can. I enjoy an active lifestyle, which tends to revolve around the beach.” David finds the biggest and newest aircrafts are always appealing, “The 747 is affectionately referred to as ‘Queen of the Skies’, and for good reason, and it’s sad to think that I’ll probably never get that chance. In all honesty, there’s not a day when I wouldn’t love to fly the old Saab one more time. That was real ‘hands-on’ flying. I miss it every day, and I wouldn’t write off a chance to fly it again before I retire.” “I remember every single Captain I’ve flown with, and every instructor. The best leaders are those that don’t have to command respect. I hope to pass on my experiences and knowledge, in the same way that they have been passed down to me. This to me, is what it means to be a pilot. The word ‘pilot’ describes who I am, not what I do for a living.” Instagram: @dvdmfft 159

TIME The Smartwatch Smartwatch Comes of Age Or how Dick Tracy changed the world… smartwatch is a wearable computing device marketed as more than a cell phone. With a glance, it gives atomic clock accuracy and allows you to read your text messages in a device that is always at hand.” Source: Techopedia.com The smartwatch phenomenon is a clear case of life imitating art and you can blame it on Dick Tracy, that relentless comic book detective and his 2-Way Wrist Radio watch. Since Tracy’s iconic watch debuted in print in 1946 and thereafter in f￿lms, the world has frankly been expecting a watch that does more than just tell time. In the decades since, we’ve seen some weird and wonderful iterations, from the good old calculator watch to the very f￿rst Linux wristwatch in 1998, a “wristwatch videoconferencing computer” that earned inventor Steve Mann the title “the father of wearable computing.” Smartwatches are the sum total of all the watches that preceded them and though inspired by Tracy’s archetypical watch, are nothing at all like it. For one, they’re smart. Consider that a smartwatch has more computing power than NASA used to put man on the moon. While 2013 was really the debut year of the modern smartwatch, 2015 was the year in which it gained unstoppable Photo: Shutterstock momentum. Thank you Apple. Wilderness recently established a local programme and club to offer African residents great rates and have invited these residents to join its membership programme. “I love the authenticity of the Wilderness Safaris’ experience, the generosity of spirit of the camp staff, the challenge of creating a new sales channel and delighting guests, the extraordinarily good work the company does….and, of course the magnificent wildlife in the unique destinations where Wilderness Safaris has camps and explorations.” Twitter: @WeAreWilderness 191

LIFESTYLE It is a tough call for any African tourism company, as the primary reason many f￿ock to the continent from the far corners of the globe is to experience the bush in all her raw and untouched beauty. A sign of the times? That it is indeed. However, those guests who want to remain connected while on holiday are able to take advantage of the network of Wilderness Safaris camps that do offer a Wi-Fi connection for guests. Yet, if you do want to remain completely off the grid, you can, as Wilderness has a series of camps that, in their own words, enable you to remain “unequivocally disconnected”. This will allow guests the opportunity to genuinely “get away from it all” and truly enjoy their holiday and the natural space around them. Now for those who would like to connect, in certain camps (primarily those recently reached by cell phone signal) Wi-Fi will be available. Guests will likely use both connected and disconnected camps on a Wilderness Safaris itinerary anyway so it is important to alert your agent as to what you would prefer while on your stay. The idea of disconnecting in order to reconnect has always been a part of the company’s promise to its guests – offering them space, intact ecosystems and the opportunity to connect with nature and oneself. “We regard this (disconnecting in order to reconnect) as an important part of what we stand for and encourage. In other words, a world where natural ecosystems are valued and appreciated, with some resistance applied to the inexorable advance of man and technology. It is our strong belief that we simply have to contribute to keeping some areas of the planet wild and remote”, says Chris Roche, Chief Marketing Off￿cer. Wilderness currently offers its guests private access to almost three million hectares of Africa’s f￿nest wildlife reserves, while remaining f￿ercely committed to protecting our planet’s precious natural and cultural resources. The camps and safaris operated by Wilderness Safaris can be found in some of Africa’s best wildlife and wilderness reserves across seven different countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In the modern world, two simultaneous trends have emerged: on the one hand, people have come to rely on being able to connect wherever they go. On the other, more and more guests are enjoying being able to disconnect from being constantly “online” and relishing the opportunity to re- establish real relationships with their spouse 192 legacyinspires.com
