SCULPT 3D printed art art Where art and technology intertwine D printing has been around since 1984, but we are only now starting to see the true capabilities of this awe-inspiring technology. This technology is being used to do amazing things – things you would think impossible - in not only art but also the medical, aerospace and aviation, industrial and automotive industries. In the medical feld, 3D printing has been used to create prosthetics, and has been investigated by scientists and academia to determine if 3D printing could be used to build organs and other body parts using inkjet techniques. NASA 3D prints combustion chamber liners and in March 2015, the FAA approved GE Aviation’s frst 3D printed jet engine part for fight. The automotive industry was among the frst adopters of 3D printing but has kept its use limited to low volume prototyping applications for years. Today, 3D automotive printing has evolved to creating functional parts used in test vehicles, engines and platforms. It’s expected that 3D printing in the automotive industry will produce $1.1 billion by 2019. Industrial 3D printing has been around for a while, with manufacturers using Sources: Explainingthefuture.com: 3D printing, 3dprinting.com, 3dprintingfromscratch.com, 3dprintingindustry.com, www.boredpanda.com Images: Shutterstock.com, Linlin & Pierre-Yves Jacques – lpjacques.com manufacturing parts from thousands to hundreds of dollars. Changes to prototypes the technique to create prototypes for manufacturing and research purposes. This manufacturing method is a swift and pocket-savvy method, saving companies thousands on the creation of prototypes that they used to wait weeks for. It reduces the costs of can be made instantly and they can be reprinted the same day in a process called rapid prototyping. Rapid manufacturing also enables companies to do short run custom manufacturing, which creates custom end-user products. 3D printers can even be purchased by consumers as kits which they can assemble to create their own personal desktop 3D printer. It’s no surprise that the creatives of the world have decided to dabble in this exciting tech, with 3D printing being used by artists and creatives to recreate classic paintings and sculptures and some, even using it as the primary medium in their work. 67
SCULPT GETTING CREATIVE Design. Sculpture. Recreation of famous masterpieces. These are just a few of the ways that 3D printing has already been used in the art world. You may ask yourself if watching something be created for you is still art. I’d say yes. It still requires artistic know- how and talent, artists still have to pre-design, and may use 3D printing to create prototypes of their work before they begin, or they may even use it to create an easier way to sell their work. Take for example, young set-designer Jacopo Truffa from Rome. He has combined his love of technology and art though his project called “frstborn”. Truffa created nine wax, wooden and plaster sculptures using traditional techniques, but instead of just selling them, the artworks will be digitised and once they are available as digital fles on his website, anyone, anywhere in the world can purchase and download a 3D fle containing one of his sculptures and print it at home, or at a 3D printing shop. It’s a kind of online-exhibition but instead of purchasing the sculpture off its stand, Truffa BACKGROUND Invented by Charles Hull in 1984, 3D or 3 Dimensional printing is otherwise known as additive manufacturing, and for good reason, as layer upon layer of materials are added – through additive processes - until the fnal object is formed. Each layer may be viewed as a thinly-sliced horizontal cross- section of the end product. There are myriad 3D printing methods, the oldest of which is Steriolithography. This is the method that can be used by consumers to create 3D printed objects, whether they be an artist wanting to create a prototype of a painting or sculpture or a mechanical engineer that needs to ensure a part will ft their design. Other methods include digital light processing (DLP), fused deposition modelling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS), selective laser melting (SLM), electronic beam melting (EBM) and laminated object manufacturing (LOM). Additive manufacturing advocates believe that 3D printing will change the face of commerce, because consumers will be able to create their own custom products rather than engaging in trade and buying from other people and corporations. With this method having positive effects on energy use, waste reduction, product availability, and several industries, it is set to alter the manufacturing industry as we know it. And this is just the beginning. 68 legacyinspires.com

Following this, he travelled overseas where he became more involved in working in sales and marketing and realised that it was his true calling. Upon returning to South Africa, Ewan met Peter Foaden, who is the Managing Director of Magic Breakaways and someone who Ewan says he looks up to as his mentor. So in the end, he found a career that’s made up of both his passions, namely sales and marketing, paired within one of Africa’s leading hotel brands, The Legacy Hotel Group. The top three places Ewan would like to visit are America, so that he can take his daughters to DisneyLand, Mexico and all of the Mediterranean islands. Of the places he has visited, Ewan’s favourite is a small coastal ver fantasised about owning your very own escape in the heart of town called Gocek in Turkey where the African Bush? Bertish rides waves the size of four-story buildings for fun. He is also a sought-after motivational speaker. Currently, Bertish is focusing on paddling across the Atlantic Ocean, by himself on a custom-built SUP. Baker’s repertoire is just as impressive. He is the two time winner of the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational and was crowned the Big Wave World Tour (BWWT) world champion after racking up more than double the number of points than any of his competitors during the 2013/2014 BWWT season. TEAHUPO’O This village on the coast of the Island of Tahiti is known for the surf break and heavy, glassy waves offshore that often reach two to three metres and can sometimes reach up to seven metres in size. It’s where the Billabong Pro Tahiti surf competition takes place, is part of the World Championship Tour (WCT) of the Association of Surfng Professionals World Tour surfng circuit and used to be a stop on the World Tour of the International Body Boarding Association.
