Welcome to the inaugural National Jazz Festival The National Jazz Festival was created by instrumental and vocal jazz directors, caring parents, and supportive jazz musicians in an effort to fill a void and lack of a major national jazz festival with an educational philosophy. Upon the cancellation of other festivals, the National Jazz Festival team saw a need to create an event that allows thousands of students to continue to share their talents and hard work with their peers from around the country. Band directors, teachers, students and parents are donating their time to make this inaugural event a success. We are proud to say that the National Jazz Festival is being produced for you today 100% by volunteers. These volunteers are sharing their love of jazz by supporting jazz education. We are proud to be showcasing 1,200 students performing in 63 ensembles from 11 states, including Puerto Rico at today’s event. These statistics already make the National Jazz Festival the largest independent high school jazz festival in the East! We hope that you return to the National Jazz Festival each year as we grow, expand, and celebrate jazz students from around the country to continue and advance this American art form. Simply by attending today, you have helped us support jazz education and have helped us launch the next cutting edge festival that will bring new opportunities to students for many years to come. For that, we share our deepest gratitude and hope you enjoy your day at the National Jazz Festival. Sincerely, National Jazz Festival Team 4

Without it, we risk losing an opportunity to reach those kids for whom music is the pathway to learning. I've seen this firsthand during my days as an early childhood music teacher. I remember one child in particular who would sit by my side during every music class. He would request song after song, eagerly and joyfully follow directions, use his voice, connect with his body, and was fully engaged at all times. It was only later that I found out he had been labeled the \"problem child\" in his regular classroom setting, and that music class was the only place where he was not only not struggling, but truly able to shine. Seeing him in this context showed his classroom teachers a different kid from the one they knew, and provided a different way to engage with him that completely changed his experience at the school.  Without music education, we also lose the opportunity to inspire young people who may not otherwise be exposed to different types of music. Jazz, in particular, with its emphasis on improvisation, provides kids the opportunity to express themselves and experiment with creativity, performance, teamwork, and problem-solving. It's a style that allows for a real feeling of musical freedom. On top of that, the history of Jazz and its roots in the black community in this country is a story that needs to be told and celebrated for its incredible contribution to musical culture.\" Laurie Berkner 16
