Tzedakah Kari Warren For those of you who are not sure of how Tzedakah works — It is really very simple.... The minimum donation is $5.00 (and the dollar amount is NOT included on the card). Pick a fund — General, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, Cantor's Discretionary Fund, Building Fund, Shabbos Club, Hebrew School, Prayer Books or Bonnie Lynne Scholarship. You can call, mail or e-mail your donation to the office. This is a great way to help your shul and acknowledge life cycle events in someone's life. Nanuet Hebrew Center will send a card to the person letting them know that you made a donation in their honor or sending them condolences. We also will list your donation in the Bulletin. You may also make a donation to someone that is not a member of the shul. They will also receive a note as well, as long as you supply us with their address. AT OUR SCHOOL Nina Woldin visited with our 3rd & 4th Grade students. She showed them a video about Shabbat. One quote in the video was from Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who refers to Shabbat as \"a palace in time.\" The students talked about the things they would have in their own Shabbat palaces, and filled in puzzle pieces with activities they would like to do on Shabbat. They took the puzzles home, and will put them together as they do each activity. Sophia Olijarczyk and Vylet Bernstein Simon Morenberg They talked about traditional Shabbat celebrations for Magic Shabbat glasses for sight. each of the five senses, and then students created their own way to celebrate for each sense. Mixing spices for different smells Challah with Nutella is a great Shabbat taste! Shadow puppet show, also for sight. that express Shabbat. Page 12 NHC Bulletin Tevet — Shevat 5779 January 2019

Hazak Wishing everyone a very happy, healthy New Year. One resolution, you should make for the New Year, if you are over 65, is to attend one Hazak meeting this year. If you are not impressed with this meeting, plan to attend another one, because like fine wine, we get better with age. Just a reminder, we will be showing off our artistic talents at the January 3 meeting. It may be too late for you to join us at this meeting but don’t miss out on the rest of the year. We are making exciting plans for the New Year including at least one trip in the Spring. WARNING!! If you hear a great deal of laughter coming from the synagogue in February, it could be coming from our meeting on February 7. We invite all over 65 to become members and join us at this meeting and enjoy the surprise. I will close with a quote from Cher at age 72. “My mom still gives me advice and I still don’t listen”. And one more thing to ponder. My grandson has a loose tooth. It just fell out. When he puts it under his pillow, the tooth fairy will give him money. Now, if the tooth fairy loses a tooth, will he have to give it back? In Our Mailbox Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for agreeing to have Nanuet Hebrew Center as a partnering institution for the AIPAC Rockland Community Event. The event will be on Wednesday, February 6th at the Rockland Jewish Community Campus. We will be joined by AIPAC’s Director of Strategic Initiatives, Jonathan Kessler. Jonathan will lead us in an important discussion about the many challenges facing Israel and the American pro-Israel community as well as ways that we can address them. Attached, please find the invitation. We will be sending out the first round of invitations to all Rockland residents that are in our database tomorrow. Would you be willing to have the flyers in your synagogue, include the event in your weekly email blasts and announcements on Shabbat? All your help and efforts in recruitment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for all your help. Jordana Samot New York State AIPAC • The American Israel Public Affairs Committee Dear Rabbi Kurland, We acknowledge, with deep appreciation, your very generous donation. This donation is a true chesed shel emet (act of loving kindness). Your support helps provide funerals and burials for indigent Jews. We ensure that they are buried with peace and dignity, in the traditional Jewish Way, sparing them the fate of anonymous mass burials in city cemetery. Thank you for your meaningful support. Very truly yours, Amy Koplow Executive Director The Hebrew Free Burial Association January 2019 Tevet — Shevat 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 19

Tzedakah / ‫צדקה‬ Tzedakah received and recorded by the 10th of the month or the first business day after, will be acknowledged on these pages. If the office is closed because of holidays falling on these days, only donations received before the holiday will appear. Please also note that acknowledgment or lack thereof on these pages does not constitute an official receipt of your donation by the shul. In the event that acknowledgment of your donation does not appear, please let the synagogue office know and we will print it in the next issue of the Bulletin. Planning Ahead Now is the time to start the planning that enhances the work of the congregation by raising the necessary funds so dues need not be raised. Our ongoing fundraisers include the Rabbi's Walk and the Tree of Life. To reserve a brick on the Rabbi’s Walk or reserve a stone or a leaf on the Tree of Life, call Estelle Eisenkraft in care of the office at 845-708-9181.
