NANUET HEBREW CENTER AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM 411 S. LITTLE TOR ROAD, NEW CITY, NY 10956 (845) 708-9181 Visit us at: http://www.nanuethc.org E-mail address: [email protected] March 2019 Adar I Adar II — 5779 Volume 48, Number 7 The Festival of Santa Esterica The Festival of Santa Esterica is a holiday that was created as a substitute for Purim by the Anusim (also known as \"conversos\", Sephardi Jews forced to convert to Catholicism) after their expulsion from Spain in the late 15th century. It is still celebrated today in the Latin America and Southwestern United States. The conversos who wanted to maintain their identity as Jews fled to Portugal, yet they had to face another religiously based persecution of Jews and Muslims by Manuel I of Portugal and expulsion in 1497, this was what brought them and the festival to the New World. The festival was themed about a fictional saint called \"Esterica\" who was heavily based upon Queen Esther. During the festival the New Christian women fasted for 3 days as Esther herself, her uncle Mordechai and the Jews of Persia did in the Book of Esther prior to her meeting with King Achashverosh. continued, p. 3

According to historian Janet Liebman Jacobs, converso women used to light candles and cook a kosher banquet with their daughters - which helped passing out knowledge of the traditional Jewish cuisine to the next generations. The public festival celebrations had became private events that was celebrated with the family indoors. The conversos had also started to honor Esther with iconographic art pieces they made in her image and held in their households. (From Wikipedia) Thanks to all of the NHC volunteers who helped at the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry on Sunday, February 17. Our NHC volunteers did a great job assembling bags, filling them with food, packing various items including Shabbat candles and fresh vegetables, carrying the bags to the clients’ cars, and much more. Thanks again for volunteering at the Food Pantry and representing NHC! From the President Over the past several months a few of us have been attending seminars on how to implement and maintain a legacy program for our synagogue. To better understand what we are striving to establish, I have included some FAQs taken from the Federation website. What is LIFE & LEGACY? LIFE & LEGACY is a partnership of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) and Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County that promotes after-lifetime giving to benefit Rockland County’s synagogues, agencies, and other Jewish entities. Through training, support and monetary incentives LIFE & LEGACY motivates Jewish organizations to integrate legacy giving into their philanthropic culture in order to assure Jewish tomorrows. Why LIFE & LEGACY? • To cultivate a culture of legacy giving. • To foster camaraderie and respect among Jewish organizations in Rockland County To give generous and forward-thinking members of the community an opportunity to express their passion, purpose and commitment to the future of Rockland’s most valued Jewish organizations. WHY PARTICIPATE? In one way or another your life is rooted in Jewish experiences connecting you to the Jewish community. Chances are you already support Jewish charitable organizations in Rockland County, but have you included these organizations in your will or estate plan? By leaving a legacy, you can assure that the traditions and institutions that mean so much to you today will exist for future generations. By making a legacy commitment you can: • Convey your commitment to being Jewish. • Express values instilled in you by your parents and grandparents. • Perpetuate the Jewish traditions you cherish. Preserve the programs and organizations that support Jewish life in Rockland County. By making your legacy commitment now or sharing with the community that you have already done so, Rockland organizations to whom you make a legacy commitment have the opportunity to secure an incentive grant. So why should you leave a legacy gift to Nanuet Hebrew Center? It is all summed up in our case statement, which HGF had asked us to prepare. What sets Nanuet Hebrew Center apart is we are large enough to serve the community, while still being small enough to know the individual. Page 4 NHC Bulletin Adar I — Adar II —5779 March 2019

We were formed in 1939 when a dedicated group of Jewish neighbors from Nanuet were walking home from Spring Valley when the skies opened. Like the rainbow shown to Noah, it was a sign that they needed to form their own Kehillah. With our rich history, Nanuet Hebrew Center is a valuable resource for the entire Community. We are a multi-generational egalitarian Conservative Jewish Center with approximately 300 congregant families and are actively affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Jew- ish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County. Today, we are recognized as one of the first synagogues in the New York Metropolitan Area to re- place its traditional membership dues with a “self-directed” pledge structure. The voluntary pledge structure has enabled us to be more open, inclusive and welcoming to all, regardless of financial or personal situation. Making Judaism accessible to everyone. Our Legacy donors are a group of individuals who are committed to our mission of providing mean- ingful opportunities for connections to G-d through Torah. By establishing a legacy, you will en- sure: The growing and evolving needs of our, congregant family members and community at large; The education of our community’s Jewish youth; The enrichment of the lives of our adult community by furthering their own Jewish education; The continuation our mission “establishing meaningful connections to G-d through Torah”. We have already received our first commitment. We are asking others to follow. Please join us! Jeff Schragenheim, President Stop & Shop Stop & Shop store is running a school-fundraising program, A+ School Rewards, and we need YOUR help! Every time you shop at a participating Stop & Shop from October 9 through March 17 using your Stop & Shop Card, you will earn points towards our school . . . those points will become CASH that our school can use for any of our educational needs! Tzedakah Kari Warren For those of you who are not sure of how Tzedakah works — It is really very simple.... The minimum donation is $5.00 (and the dollar amount is NOT included on the card). Pick a fund — General, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, Cantor's Discretionary Fund, Building Fund, Shabbos Club, Hebrew School, Prayer Books or Bonnie Lynne Scholarship. You can call, mail or e-mail your donation to the office. This is a great way to help your shul and acknowledge life cycle events in someone's life. Nanuet Hebrew Center will send a card to the person letting them know that you made a donation in their honor or sending them condolences. We also will list your donation in the Bulletin. You may also make a donation to someone that is not a member of the shul. They will also receive a note as well, as long as you supply us with their address. If you have any additional questions, please call or e-mail me @ [email protected] March 2019 Adar I — Adar II 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 9

Hazak We proudly announce that on March 16 some of our Hazak members will be performing in The Purim Spiel, BEAUTY AND THE FEAST. Please show your support for the NANUET HEBREW CENTER and your love of the theatre by becoming a sponsor. You will receive preferred seating and the opportunity to meet all the stars especially those from Hazak. We had a wonderful February meeting, with a special visit from a special comedian, STEVIE SOBOL. We have also discovered that Hazak has some terrific amateur comedians. Special thanks to one of our members Joel Binenfeld for arranging this program. Our March 7 meeting, we have something planned, but at the moment, I just don’t remember what it is, I think its either coloring with colored pencils or games. Join us and help make this decision. If not join us on April 4 for something else. We are planning a trip in the spring for members only. Some interesting information: BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH RELIGION. In the January/February AARP Bulletin there was an article on 99 ways to add Healthy Years to Your Life. In Our Mailbox Dear NHC Family, Thank you so much for all your good wishes and donations in honor of the engagement of our grandson Jared to Gabriela Schottenstein. It is so important for us to share this wonderful time in our lives with our NHC family. Fondly, Phyllis and Ken Benjamin Dear Rabbi Kurland, I’m not sure exactly when David Kezner’s yahrzeit is, but I know it’s near tu b’shevat. This year I was out of town on business and both dates were not commemorated. But though David has been gone for so many years, his memory is still a blessing for me. He was a friend, a co-worker USY advisor and mentor and he is still missed. He will always be missed. Please accept this donation in memory of my dear friend David. May his neshama have an aliyah. Warmly, Hani Dear NHC Family, John and I are once again very grateful for the good wishes for our anniversary. Ii is always very special when so many of our friends and fellow members make a donation to the NHC in our honor. Sorry for the late message of appreciation, but we were not home and just got them forwarded. Shalom John and Ilse Lang Dear Rabbi Kurland, On behalf of the Center for Safety & Change Board of Directors, Staff, Volunteers and victims and survivors we serve, please accept our sincerest condolences on the loss of Norman Kantrowitz. Thank you for your gift made in his memory. Your generosity is truly appreciated. What started out with a crisis hotline coupled with an emergency residential shelter, Center for Safety & Change is Rockland County’s only non-profit organization dedicated to supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and all crimes, for almost four decades. Your generosity will allow thousands in our community access to our life-saving and life- changing programs providing critical comfort, when needed most, 24 hours a day, 7 days week and 365 days of the year. Together, we can end gender-based violence and other forms of oppression. Respectfully, Tracie McLee Director of Development Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your donation to the Anti-Defamation League. Together, you and ADL are standing against leaders who try to divide us, haters who incite violence, and movements on both the right and the left that use anti-Semitism, racism and other forms of bigotry to promote their political agendas. Your gift will allow ADL to fight back against hate and its consequences. In 2019, with your help, ADL will continue to lead the fight against the viral spread of online anti-Semitism and hate, winning support for new approaches by never giving up. Sincerely, Jonathan Greenblatt CEO and National Director March 2019 Adar I — Adar II 5779 NHC Bulletin Page 29
