NANUET HEBREW CENTER AFFILIATED WITH THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM 411 S. LITTLE TOR ROAD, NEW CITY, NY 10956 (845) 708-9181 Visit us at: http://www.nanuethc.org E-mail address: [email protected] February 2019 Shevat — Adar I 5779 Volume 48, Number 6 The Sign of Adar is Pisces ‫מזל אדר דגים‬ Fish from the 3rd century Roman mosaic villa floor from Lod After touring the world, Israel’s most impressive mosaic will finally have a port of its own. Before dropping anchor at the Shelby White and Leon Levy Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center upon its projected completion in 2019, the massive mosaic, decorated with seafaring motifs, had an adventure of its own. The richly colorful mosaic was discovered accidentally during salvage excavations in 1996 at a central city square in Lod. The mosaic was discovered in what appears to be a large Roman villa from the Byzantine era. Made up of several panels, it is 17 x 9 meters in size, some 1,940 square feet. Among the colorful illustrations found on the mosaic are animals such as elephants and lions, birds, fish, and crustaceans. There are also plant life and flowers, boats, and geometric patterns. Archaeologist Dr. Zaraza Friedman has said that the owner was “involved in the maritime trade” and “had widespread connections with North Africa,” from where the mosaic artist is thought to have come. Tzedakah Kari Warren For those of you who are not sure of how Tzedakah works — It is really very simple.... The minimum donation is $5.00 (and the dollar amount is NOT included on the card). Pick a fund — General, Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, Cantor's Discretionary Fund, Building Fund, Shabbos Club, Hebrew School, Prayer Books or Bonnie Lynne Scholarship. You can call, mail or e-mail your donation to the office. This is a great way to help your shul and acknowledge life cycle events in someone's life. Nanuet Hebrew Center will send a card to the person letting them know that you made a donation in their honor or sending them condolences. We also will list your donation in the Bulletin. You may also make a donation to someone that is not a member of the shul. They will also receive a note as well, as long as you supply us with their address. From the President It’s the middle of the winter, and I sit here trying to write something inspiring.  But  the cold weather, shorter days, and personal challenges have left me with a loss for  words.  I would love to write about a tremendous financial windfall that has lifted us  out  of  the  mire  of  debt  or  write  about  the  completion  of  renovations  that  our  building  has  needed  for  years.    However,  neither  has  come  to  fruition.  Instead  we  have  been  treading  water  and  hoping  that  a  tidal  wave  doesn’t  come  and  wash  us  away.    I  apologize  for  being  so  “doom  and  gloom”,  but  this  is  the  reality  of  our  current state.  We  have  been  given  new  challenges  this  year...    The  roof  has  been  springing  leaks  affecting  the  ceiling  of  the  main  sanctuary;  because  of  the  needed  repairs,  we  are  still unable to repair our elevator; We are facing an increase in antisemitic rhetoric,  making us act by hiring more security (an unforeseen expense); and we still have not  raised  the  needed  funds  for  replacing  our  sanctuary’s  HVAC.  This  is  the  reality  of  NHC.  So how do we pull ourselves our of the raging river and get us back on solid ground?   We  can  only  do  this  with  everyone’s  help.  Of  course,  your  money  is  always  welcomed.  But  even  more  importantly,  we  need  volunteers.  The  annual  Journal  Brunch is coming soon.  Sadly, we are once again facing the prospect of having only  our normal committee of four (Marcy Karsenty, Bruce Pollack, Kari, and me) run the  entire event.  It is physically impossible to have us run the logistics of the event and  do  all  the  solicitations  for  donations  beyond  the  funds  brought  in  by  our  congregants’ ads.  We need you to go out and solicit your doctors, your dentist, your  lawyers,  and  the  establishments  where  you  shop.    I  recently  saw  an  infomercial  where  the  real  estate  investor  said  the  following,”  One  of  my  absolute  favorite  business  strategies  is  using  other  people’s  money  (OPM)  for  my  investments...  looking  beyond  the  limits  of  your  own  resources  and  finding  sources  of  money  elsewhere”.  We  too,  need  to  look  beyond  our  own  resources.    We  have  been  surviving on your generosity alone for way too long.  It’s time to act.    Last year we were only able to raise a little more than $15,000.  I would like to blow  this  figure  out  of  the  water.    With  your  help,  I  am  confident  that  we  can  raise  $30,000.  We have done this in the not‐so‐distant past.  We can do it again. Hazak We did it again. The first meeting of the year 2019 was very successful and of course fun. Our artists worked very hard busily painting rocks, from the smallest, itsy bitsy one, to the largest one, a Rockland boulder. Here is a picture of our completed projects. See if you can figure out which artist painted each rock. My granddaughter, Melissa, was able to figure out which ones I designed. Special thanks to Esther Spiegel for arranging the rock painting and providing all the supplies. Also, Happy Birthday to Herb. February is going to be an exciting month. Looking forward to our meeting on February 7 @ 12:00 PM. We will be entertained by a comedian; it will be lots of fun and laughs (LOL). Also, on February 9th is the DOO WOP and OLDIES Dance Party. There will be members of Hazak at the dance. You can reserve a table for ten (possibly with your best friends) and receive a discount on the admission. Let’s make this one of our most successful social events of the year. In addition, this may be an opportunity to obtain autographs from some of the “rock” artists. You never know, some day they could be famous and their rocks will be a valuable work of art. And now for some useless vital statistics obtained from the U.S.A. section of the Journal News; 1-There are 20.6 nurses per 1,000 residents in Washington D. C., most in US. Utah has the least at 8.5 per 1,000. 2- 63% of Americans say discussing politics at a holiday dinner table creates more drama than discussing their dating life. P.S. I have no idea who these 63% are. Sisterhood of the Nanuet Hebrew Center Book Group The book under discussion by our group was Button Man, by Andrew Gross. The setting of the story was Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the early1900’s. Wretched poverty governed the lives of the Rabishevsky family (later changed to Raab). Morris, the eldest of three brothers, works his way up in the garment industry. Unfortunately, the mob demands a portion of the business and uses nefarious methods to reach its goal. A fictionalized account of actual events, we learn of the “Jewish Mafia” and of the criminal Louis Buchalter, as well as the Prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey who was out to break the mob. An exciting story of family loyalty, courage and crime, the book was enjoyed by the majority of our members. (Although, one of our group found many Yiddish words incorrectly translated). By the way, “button man” has nothing to do with the garment industry—it is a term for a gangster. Please join us for our next meeting, Wednesday, February 21, as we discuss Jaffa Beach, by Fedora Horowitz Marilyn Brenner Stop & Shop Stop & Shop store is running a school-fundraising program, A+ School Rewards, and we need YOUR help! In Our Mailbox Dear Rabbi Kurland, I want to thank you for the kindness and sensitivity you have shown to me and my family. You have so much compassion and understanding of the human condition. Life goes on, and I am learning to adapt while remembering the sixty-two years Abby and I had together. Thank you again, Barbara Dan Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your generous gift to Sharsheret. Hebrew for “chain”, Sharsheret provides women and families with confidential culturally- relevant support, from before diagnosis through treatment and beyond. At Sharsheret, we know that a cancer diagnosis affects the entire family. Whether the diagnosis is early stage or later stage, we offer services, support, and resources for those affected by cancer, their partners, children, parents and friends. With your critical support. Sharsheret will continue to grow its life-enhancing programs and resources for thousands of young women and families facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. With deep gratitude, we joint the women and families of Sharsheret in wishing you and your family continued good health. Sincerely, Elana Silber Galit Reichlin Executive Director Director of Development Dear Rabbi Kurland, On behalf of the Jewish foundation for the Righteous, thank you. Your contribution has made it possible for the Foundation to continue to provide financial support to aged and needy Christian rescuers who need our help. The Foundation will also be able to continue its education program that teaches teachers the history of the Holocaust, its relevance for these times and the significance of altruistic behavior for our society. Again, I thank you and hope that the foundation will always earn your respect and support. Sincerely, Stanlee J. Stahl Executive Vice President Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you so much for your gift for Yad Sarah. We are grateful for this vital financial support and for your confidence in the work of Yad Sarah and its volunteers. Yad Sarah is indeed building and growing and we have generous friends like you to thank for helping to strengthen the organization. Your gift will go directly to purchase new wheelchairs, patient hoists, breast milk pumps and other equipment for distribution through our extensive volunteer-staffed Lending Service, to bring outreach services to an isolated and frail older person, to enable victims of terror and trauma to revitalize their lives through life-enriching programs and therapeutic activities, and to open the world to the physically challenged through handicapped accessible transportation.
