Is it possible that the Jewish holiday gained some inspiration from Arbor Day? By Jeremy Sharon, Jpost.com Although the tradition of planting trees on the Tu Bishvat holiday would appear to be quintessentially Israeli, it appears that it has its origins much farther afield. Dr. Hezi Amiur, curator of the Israel Collection at the National Library of Israel, says that as with other Jewish holidays, the Zionist pioneers sought to inject a Zionist theme into significant days in the Jewish calendar. He notes that the holiday known as the new year for trees has little ceremonial content, although the Kabbalistic practice of a Seder with fruit and wine has increased. Continued on p. 3

The idea was advanced by a Hebrew teacher from Jerusalem, Haim LeibZuta, and began to take root in around 1910. One Tu Bishvat poster from the era held by the National Library shows children harvesting carobs, and collecting them together with pomegranates and other fruits grown in Israel. Other posters from the period, advertise tree-planting events, Tu Bishvat processions and dances as part of festivities which were established to give the festival a Zionist makeover. “Hebrew culture and the Zionist movement adopted Tu Bishvat as a time that symbolizes the return to nature, settlement and Hebrew-language education,” says Amiur. “New content was poured into the new year for trees, designed to strengthen the ties of children youth and new immigrants to nature in Israel and to the values of settlement and agriculture, and to harness veteran pioneers to these values as well.” Date [event] . Name [recipient] . Leagrams can be used in place of commercial greeting cards for congratulatory messages for birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, marriages and bnei mitzvot as well as get well wishes and expressions of sympathy. They are also one of Sisterhood’s most successful fund raisers, allowing Sisterhood to donate a significant amount of money back to the Shul to help defray various synagogue expenses. The cost of each Leagram is $3. Reminder: All Leagrams must be requested in writing. [sender] February 2020 Shevat — Adar 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 3

From the Co-President February, although short (even though this is a Leap Year), is chock full of holidays and observances, some of the more well-known being Groundhog Day, St. Valentine’s Day, Black History month, American Heart month. We also celebrate President’s Day (Feb. 17th) which is an amalgamated recognition of the birthdays of two of our greatest Presidents: George Washington (Feb. 22, 1732) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12, 1809). For Jews, President’s Day has a special meaning as both Washington and Lincoln were remarkable friends of American Jews. Their lives and careers resonate as models for religious liberty and the treatment of minorities. From the moment of independence until the end of the Lincoln administration, the US was overwhelmingly Protestant, with few Catholics and even fewer Jews. In 1776, there were no more than 2,500 Jews in America. When the Civil War began, Jews comprised about one-half of 1 percent of the population, or roughly 200,000 of the total population of 31.5 million. Numerically, Jews were insignificant. They were easily ignored, and the Protestant majority was either hostile or indifferent to them. In 1787, when the Constitution was written, Jews were prohibited from holding public office in 12 of the 13 new states. In August, 1790, Washington wrote a famous letter to the Touro synagogue in Newport, R.I., affirming religious liberty in America. In this letter, Washington asserted that the United States would reject all religious bigotry and refuse to aid in any religious persecution. Jews would be free to practice their faith on equal terms with other Americans. This letter signaled a dramatic change in how most western countries treated Jews. It set the stage for the US to ultimately become the destination for millions of Jews escaping the “bigotry” and “persecution” Washington promised would not be supported by the new nation. Even more than Washington, Lincoln was a friend of the Jews. Unlike Washington, or indeed any other previous president, Lincoln had a number of close, personal friends who were Jewish. He openly and vigorously opposed the Know-Nothing Party, which would have restricted non-Protestant immigration. While aggressively anti-Catholic, the Know-Nothings were unconcerned that their anti- immigration platform would also harm Jews. As president, Lincoln supported the rights of Jewish soldiers to have chaplains of their own faith, promoted Jews to important political and military positions, and quickly and vigorously overruled Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s infamous order expelling Jews from his military district. Like Washington, Lincoln would give “bigotry no sanction” and “persecution no assistance. Both Washington and Lincoln built strong records of judging people by their abilities and contributions to the nation, and not by their religion. From the Revolution to the Civil War, when anti-Semitism was common and rarely condemned, Washington and Lincoln stand out for their courage and common sense. They make President’s Day a particularly important holiday for Jews. So when February 17th rolls around this year, don’t just treat it as a day off from work (if you’re fortunate enough for that to be the case), but truly celebrate the birthdays of those two presidents who were instrumental in bringing about the rights and liberties we have as Jews in this country today. SISTERHOOD PAID-UP DINNER (REVISITED)* Donna Smith On November 7, the NHC Sisterhood had our annual Paid-up membership dinner. This year’s theme was Pomegranates. We learned all about them from our own Gerri Kurland. She gave a wonderful lesson on their meaning in the Jewish religion as well as other aspects of the fruit. Who knew there was so much to know about a pomegranate? In addition, we had great food and we made a beautiful pomegranate craft. Look at the photos to see the creative stained glass pictures that we made. A special thank you to Ellen Rifken and Jane Rudnick, VP’s of Membership. They did a great job coordinating the evening. Also thank you Gerri for your very informative lesson, Mindy Sayer for organizing the craft, Jill David for cooking some of the food and to everyone else who helped make this evening a success! *Editors’ note: We missed the fact there were two submissions for the December issue. Our apologies to Donna! Page 6 NHC Bulletin Shevat — Adar 5780 February 2020

REMINDER — TEA and PEANUT BUTTER Multiple synagogues help with the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry and provide different types of food. NHC's responsibility is to supply TEA (boxes of tea bags) and PEANUT BUTTER to the Food Pantry families. Please drop off Kosher peanut butter and tea at the box outside of the NHC office. We are always looking for additional volunteers to support the Rhoda Bloom Kosher Food Pantry and distribute food at the JCC-Jewish Family Services. While NHC's turn to provide extra volunteers is every February, you are welcome to participate other months as well. For more information, please contact Susan Saffar at 352-1711 or [email protected]. Thanks for your help in supporting these 200 families! February 2020 Shevat — Adar 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 9

2020 Winter Kinnus at NHC! This month the Nanuet Hebrew Center was lucky enough to host the 2020 EMEK Winter Kinnus! NHC hosted 130 USYers from all over Rockland, Orange, Westchester, Connecticut and even some Long Islanders. These weekends are extremely important and really allow the USYers to connect with old and new friends. Each Kinnus has a group of USY members who pick a theme and plan all the events. Our very own Maya Maayani was a co-chair for Cirque De EMEK! And WOW, did she and her other co-chairs along with the EMEK board put together a FANTASTIC weekend! The USYers enjoyed sicha ( d iscussion ) , ruach ( s piritual songs) and free time to connect. As part of the Tikun Olam programming USY auctions the Kinnus Banner that is created prior to each event! Nanuet Hebrew Center was able to bid and win for our banner! We will be displaying the new banner in our youth lounge. Please feel free to come and check it out. Keep an eye out for information on the upcoming NHC Kadima/USY events! 2/9 Snow Tubing 2-4pm 3/8 Purim Carnival / Hamantaschen bake 3/21 USY will host a Havdallah open to the congregation. 4/19 Lounge Night TBD Rachel Benner, Youth Advisor Page 14 NHC Bulletin Shevat — Adar 5780 February 2020

Hazak Hi, it’s me again (in case you forget). Once again I am updating you on the latest  events going on with Hazak and its members. I have no clue what we will be  doing at our February meeting on February 6. But, I do know that at our March  5th meeting we will be having a huge Birthday extravaganza. We will be  celebrating everyone’s birthday that is turning over 90 years young this year.  More details to be included in next month’s Bulletin (i.e. to be continued).  There will be cake.  Now to fill you in on what some of the members did in January. The men of  Hazak participated in the Men’s Club Shabbot service. Some of Hazak members  were also seen at the combined Sisterhood and Men’s Club bowling night.  However, they didn’t win the prize for highest game (not even close).    There is one other thing that is happening in March. It is the Purim Spiel  “Hairspritz — The Purim Musical”. Again there will be members of Hazak  performing in the play. So, make your reservations early, and if you want to be  a part of the “In‐Crowd”, become a sponsor to help support the Arts. Don’t  forget, after the show these Hazak actors will be available to sign autographs.  Special thanks to Estee for baking a cake for our January meeting. It was  delicious, and I had two pieces.   Strange as it may seem, the 2020 baseball season will be starting soon with  Spring Training. In honor of that I am including a double header of laughs, and  also to help end your New Year’s resolution on exercising:  Wife talking to husband in bed: I was going to wake up early to go jogging,     but my toes voted against me 10 to 1.  Doctor to patient: The handle on your recliner does not qualify as an  exercise machine.      Arthur Fishman   – Extra Superior Extreme Supreme Hazak Editor–in‐chief  Page 24 NHC Bulletin Shevat — Adar 5780 February 2020

In Our Mailbox To my friends at NHC, My family and I want to thank you all for the outpouring of sympathy and kind thoughts during our recent sorrow. The Reichner Family Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you so much for your support of Nely, your enthusiasm and your recommendation, as she applied to and was accepted to the wonderful Yachad Birthright trip she went on from Jan. 12-23. She had a lovely and exciting time, as we saw in all the pictures the organizers sent to the families (with details about the activities) and as was clear to us when we picked her up from JFK at the crack of dawn on the 23rd. This was so great!! Thanks again, Judy and Mordechai Friedlander Dear Rabbi Kurland, It’s difficult to imagine another year has gone by since my friend David Kezner passed away. Michelle recently posted an old photo of him with his children, probably elementary school age, on Facebook. Those little kids are now grown, productive, beautiful adults. It drove home the many years since he died. I lost my mom this past year, and while I was so blessed to have her for more than five decades, I feel the ache and the permanence of loss so much more this year than ever before. I cannot compare it to the tragic loss of David, so young, with such a young family left to grieve for him. My heart aches thinking of his loss. I still miss his special brand of humor, his love of teaching and sharing himself with his colleagues, students, youth group teens, and of course his family. Please accept this donation in his memory. His memory is truly a blessing for me. He is deeply missed. Sincerely, Hani Sandler February 2020 Shevat — Adar 5780 NHC Bulletin Page 25
