JUNIOR SENATE NEWSLETTER VOLUME 4 OCTOBER, 2020

NEWS N VIEWS Q1. Could you throw some light on your early academic days? Ms. Sudeshna Chatterjee – Director As a student back in the early seventies and eighties, I studied Principal, EuroSchool, Airoli at St. Teresa’s Convent in Kolkata, which is an ICSE school. Later, I had the privilege to study at Loreto Convent and Loreto College in Kolkata. All these institutions were ‘only for girls’ and run by nuns. Q2.What were your favourite subjects and whom do you consider as your mentor? My favourite subject was always English and I loved to read story books. My favourite authors were Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie, A.J.Cronin and Charles Dickens. As you can well imagine, the teacher who impressed me the most was my English teacher, Ms.Konika Das. Q3. Who do you give credit for your success? 3. If I look back on the last thirty years of my career, I can pay tribute to my mother for giving me a good education, and to my mother in law for pushing me to do my Teachers training and start as a teacher, and then go on and on learning till today. In fact, I topped the University of Mumbai for my Bachelors in Education, at that time being a mother of two young children. My family has always been my biggest support and has helped me to persevere in a career that I have loved , being a teacher.

Q4. Who is your role model? My role models are Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose. Gandhiji’s Satyagraha has always fascinated me. Subhash Chandra Bose’s ‘audacity’ in the history of our freedom struggle is a great lesson for me. One of the most profound moments of my life was my visit to the Cellular Jail in Andaman island (Kalapani). So you can say that all the soldiers of the Indian Freedom Struggle are my role models. Q5. What advice would you be giving to our youngsters? My favourite advice to students is ‘There is no short cut to success’. Work hard and smart for reaching your goals. Learn from your failures enough not to repeat them. Integrity of character is your strongest ally in life. Q6. Can you throw some light on your job? The part of my job as a teacher is what I enjoy the most. Being with young students such as yourselves and learning from you is my gift at my workplace. Q7. Do you take your work home? My job is 24/7 because I have a very large family of more than 3500 plus families. So yes, I take my job home every day, Sundays and holidays!

Q7. Do you believe in being strict or liberal? 7. I am very strict with myself, because I think self discipline is very important. But I know that the best way to approach a task or a relationship is not by being strict or liberal. It is by having the right intentions and interest above self at all times. Q8. Any piece of advice to teachers and parents? 8. My advice to teachers is that they should think it their greatest privilege to have entered the noble profession of teaching….their reach in creating humanity is infinite. They must use this precious blessing very well. - As interviewed by Ms. Anusia Bajaj– Junior Senate – EuroSchool, Airoli

What if time travel was possible? What if you could travel to the past and to the future….How many times have you wished you could jump in a time machine and skip that boring meeting? The secret to time travel isn’t in some exotic form of matter. What you’d need is a spaceship that could travel almost as fast as light. Einstein’s theory of relativity taught us that the faster we move through space, the slower we move in time. This phenomenon is known as time dilation. It’s not likely to happen to you though, because travelling with the speed of light isn’t quite possible with the technologies we have now. The other option is a wormhole but the problem with wormholes is that they are extremely tiny – just a billion-trillion-trillionths of a centimetre across. No human would be able to pass through. Travelling to the past can cause time paradoxes. It means that if you travelled in time and convinced your grandma not to marry, then your dad wouldn’t be born, and neither would you Then who will be the person who convinced your grandmother not to marry? Hence, if time travel was possible It would create a lot of paradoxes.

APPLE OF THE EYE – ACHIEVER Master Shlok Banerjee Grade 5A, Euroschool, Airoli Shlok, our very own Head-Boy, is a budding Mathematician, and Mathology is his religion. He has secured a perfect score in everything he has participated in last year. He is a voracious reader and enjoys reading books above his age group. Shlok loves playing Table Tennis. He is also an emerging pianist and has achieved a distinction for Piano Trinity. I had an amazing opportunity to have a word with Shlok and here is what he has to say….. 1. How and what made you incline towards Mathematics? Head-Boy - Junior Senate – EuroSchool, Airoli When I was very young, I was given exposure to many different things, including sports. At a point, my family thought I may have a great future in Olympics. But it turned out that I am a couch potato and only loved to do Mathematics! It is the only thing that makes logical sense to me. 2. Which is your favourite book and why? My favourite book list is ever changing. When I read Dan Brown, Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons was my favourite. Now, topping the list is ‘Hunger Games’ in adventure and ‘One Piece’, a bestselling Japanese comic manga. 3. How old were you when you started learning piano and what is your routine practice duration? I started playing Piano when I was 4 and I practice for 30 minutes every day.

4. Besides reading, what are your hobbies? My hobbies start and end with books. I am also very choosy. I outgrew French publication Asterix very soon, but I found Japanese Comic series ‘One Piece’ very enticing. 5. Who inspires you and is your role model? In reality, Albert Einstein. I also get inspired by the determination of the character of M.D Luffy sketched by Eiichiro Oda. 6. How do you manage your time with so many things going on? I am extremely pampered here. I have two mothers managing my schedule. All I do is obey and trust them. 7. What will you advise our friends who are scared or have a phobia of Mathematics? A lot depends on how we are wired and what kind of Gurus we get in our lives. Someone who has a phobia towards Mathematics may discover themselves in sports or arts or language or some other field. But I wish the education system could provide basic, intermediate and advanced mathematics in every grade and make it more fascinating for all. Thank you Shlok for giving us your valuable time and we wish you good luck for future. – As interviewed by Mst. Harill Thakker – Junior Senate – EuroSchool, Airoli

AN AMAZING LOCKDOWN BIRTHDAY Last week I attended a surprisingly super-cool birthday party. Considering that the pandemic doesn’t allow us to have crowded birthday parties this idea turned out into an epic bash. You won’t believe when I tell you, this party had a ‘Science Fun Theme’ and was organized virtually on Zoom. We received an e-invite along with a courier delivery of a science experiment kit. There was enough material for 6 experiments, which were conducted by a professional host over 2 hours of fun & learning. All the kids were squealing with glee when each experiment played out. The birthday boy cut a home - baked cake, while we all sang the birthday song at our own houses while connecting on our screens. Though we missed running around, playing the usual games during this theme party made us experience how birthdays can also be celebrated online.
