JUNIOR SENATE NEWSLETTER VOLUME 6 DECEMBER, 2020

NEWS AND VIEWS Ms. Katie Bagli is an avid nature lover. Her fondness for flora and fauna began at a very early age. She would share her mother’s enthusiasm in pottering around and nurturing a balcony garden. As a child, she would delight in rearing caterpillars and watch them metamorphose into butterflies. She now gives expression to her passion by writing for children. Katie has several published titles to her credit, nearly all of which are on various subjects of nature. She writes for children’s magazines too. Besides writing Katie also enjoys illustrating her own books. 1. At what age did you start writing and realized you wanted to become a writer? A. Funny as it may seem, I began writing at the age of 61. It was only then that I realized I had found my niche in life. I found writing most satisfying and fulfilling. And strangely enough, within a span of 8 years I managed to write 25 books - I really don't know how it happened. 2. What is the most exciting thing with regards to nature that you write about in your books? A. Nature has so much to offer. There are some extremely bizarre, quirky, mind-boggling, intriguing facts of nature. Any of these facts can be woven into a story. And it is exciting when children read my books and tell me that they got to learn so many things from them. 3. Who has been your inspiration as a nature lover as well as an author? A. My inspiration is Ruskin Bond, and others too like Gerald Durrell who has written a whole series of books on animals, and even Ranjit Lal.

4. Most of us love nature but don’t know how to contribute towards its well – being and need guidance as to where we could start from? What is your opinion on this for my friends and me at school? A. We all have what is called 'biophilia' in us, a love for nature. But sometimes this gets overridden by superstitions and other kinds of mindsets. So we can allow our biophilia to sensitize us by doing little things as spending time looking out of our windows at the tree outside, listening to birds calling, placing a water bowl and a bird feeder on our balconies, going for a walk in the park and looking under leaves for the eggs of bugs or turning over stones to discover maybe a lizard. This sensitivity and love for nature can help us write about nature from the heart. We can also use social media to spread the word, such as nature story-telling, or writing blogs. One can even do nature doodling or make posters. My message would be to spread the word about nature by writing. And keep pursuing your goal, never give up. 5. Is writing and story telling a skill we can all develop? How do we start? A. Writing and story-telling is certainly a skill anyone can develop. It is like a two-year old toddler developing the skill of speech. Start by reading a lot. Reading can open the window to whole new worlds, it can tune your imagination to flow, it can help you develop your own style at writing. Also, to be a good writer you need to do a lot of research on the subject you want to write. Write on topics that you enjoy or are your favourite ones. And most importantly, write from your heart. List of authors I like to read, among others : Ruskin Bond, Gerald Durrell, Michael Morpurgo, Ashish Kothari, Sharada Dwivedi, James Herriot and Roald Dahl A very enriching and enlightening interaction and experience. It was really good – as interviewed by Mst. Dhiaan Trivedi

READ MY THOUGHTS 5 IDIOMS EVERY STUDENT SHOULD KNOW Idioms are one of the most beautiful and interesting part of language. If you translate an idiom word to word, it sometimes make no sense at all. Example : “Break a leg!” shouted the stage director to his actors before the beginning of the play.

THE BEAUTY OF ‘FIGURES OF SPEECH’ Language can be used in two ways-literally and figuratively. Literal language is direct and uses the real definition and meaning of words and phrases. But when we talk figuratively, the meaning of any word/phrase will depend on the context in which they are used. A figure of speech relies on such figurative language and rhetoric. 1.Simile : A simile is a figure of speech 4.Hyperbole : It is the Greek word which means that uses comparison . It is one of the to “excess” and that is what it does, it most common forms of a figure of exaggerates . It is used to emphasize the speech and is used to bring out importance/overstate something . This dramatic nature of prose exaggerates claims are never meant to be taken Example : She is as brave as a lion. at their literal meaning. WHAT IF… What if we could live on Mars? How many times would you have thought about – ‘What if you could live on Mars’? • To reach there, we just need a good quality spaceship with enough food and water to last us till we reach Mars. We can grow food on Mars as the soil of Mars has enough nutrients to grow food. We can also find water on Mars. Water can be extracted from the soil. The rover will select the location for the settlement primarily based on the water content in the soil. Water extraction will be performed by the life support units. The rover will deposit soil into a water extractor in the life support units. The water extractor will heat soil until the water evaporates. The evaporated water will be condensed and stored, the dry soil expelled, and the process repeated to extract more water. • Mars is a planet named after the Roman God of war. It represents Masculinity and Youth. It has approximately half of the diameter of Earth. Its surface area is only slightly less than the Earth's dry land. • If we could live on Mars, we could easily see things such as volcanoes. If we would dig the soil of Mars, we will mostly see volcanic basalt rock as there are many volcanoes over there. We can find materials like Iron, Magnesium and Sodium ions in the upper atmosphere of Mars. We can also find materials like Magnesium, Aluminum, Titanium, Iron, Chromium, Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Niobium, Molybdenum, Lathanum, Europium, Tungsten and Gold.
