NEWS AND VIEWS COVID 19 - BY DR. JESAL SHETH Dr.Jesal Sheth is the senior consultant of pediatrics and neonatal intensivist at Fortis hospital Mulund, Mumbai. Q1 . How can people with mild covid-19 symptoms recover at home? A . All of us are born with no immunity and we acquire it gradually. Every child reacts to infection in a different way, though they might be strong immunologically. If their body is stronger than the virus, treatment can be done at home itself, but if the virus is stronger than the body then the person must be hospitalized. Q2 . What are your thoughts about impact of comorbidities on COVID-19? A . Given the population of our country, the level of pollution is also high, which aggravates conditions like asthma and other respiratory problems. The recovery rate of comorbid patients are more than European countries and America. Nevertheless, people with underlying heart diseases, respiratory diseases and blood pressure problems are more fragile to COVID-19. Q3 . Can the corona virus spread through contact with urine, blood and faeces? A . Corona Virus is a respiratory disease, and it is present in the respiratory tract of the infected person. The virus spreads mainly through sputum of the infected person or breath, but it is always better to avoid contact with blood of the infected person as studies have shown than blood may contain the virus. Q4 . What is the difference between medical masks and respirators like N95s? A. The efficacy of different masks is different. Different masks are used for different situations. The size of the corona virus is 0.3 ultra microns, but the cloth mask does not filter out everything which N95 mask does. Cloth mask has efficacy of 50% while N95 masks have efficacy of 95%.

Q5 .It is very difficult to wear a mask while playing football. Is there any precaution we should take after coming home? A . In a game like football, where the players are away from each other, the risk of infection is very less, but talking with friends without a mask after the game is not advisable. It is best to come home and take a bath, and hands should be washed for 2 minutes. It is also proven that hand washes are more effective than sanitizers. Q6 . What precautions should we follow when we take the vaccine, and when we are in a bus together with many other people? A . Vaccines will be available for people above the age of 12 only. When we are in the bus with many people, we should strictly follow the three guards- social distancing, mask and hand wash. Q7.Can immunity be enhanced by the diet of a person? A . Yes, immunity of a person can be controlled by a proportionate and balanced nutrient intake. Q8. Is ‘Herd Immunity’ better than vaccines? A . Herd immunity already might have started because there are many people who have shown no symptoms and are fine despite having COVID-19. Herd immunity is to eradicate the disease, so we all hope to reach there. Q9. Why aren’t schools reopening physically even though there are masks, sanitizers and all the necessary precautions taken? A . In society, kids are the most important asset, and the government is not willing to take any risk. So, the government is unsure about protecting the children in a safe way yet , so they will not allow schools to reopen. Q10.Are there any side effects to the COVID-19 vaccine? A . Yes, there are short temporary side effects. The injected area feels heavy and feels a bit painful yet tolerable, with slight fever in the body. They all are manageable side effects.

LOGIC Fibonacci Numbers In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers, commonly denoted Fₙ, form a sequence, called the Fibonacci sequence, such that each number is the sum of the two preceding ones, starting from 0 and 1.We see Fibonacci patterns everywhere in nature For Example: Number of petals on a flower will always be a Fibonacci number Puzzle Time!! Fill in the missing Fibonacci Numbers: A~ 0 , 1 , 1 , 2 , 3 , __ , 8 ,13 , __ B~ 89 ,144 , ___ , 377, 610 , ___ Fibonacci Time!! Let’s Revise the concept of Fibonacci Numbers~! Look at the Following Pattern:~ 1597, 2584, 4181, 6765, 10946, 17711, 28657, 46368, 75025, 121393, 196418, 317811, … Can you figure out the next few numbers?

Let’s see how to do it~ As you might have noticed:  The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it: •the 4181 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1597+2584), •the 28657 is found by adding the two numbers before it (10946+17711), •The 317811 is found by adding the two numbers before it (121393+196418) 01 1 •and so on!. It’s that EASY! So~ The next few numbers are: 514229 , 832040 ,1346269 , 2178309 , etc. Missing Math Symbols A mathematical symbol is a figure or a combination of figures that is used to represent a mathematical object, an action on mathematical objects, a relation between mathematical objects, or for structuring the other symbols that occur in a formula. As formulas are entirely constituted with symbols of various types, many symbols are needed for expressing all mathematics. Puzzle Time!! Fill in the missing Math a. 300 __ 3400 __ 44 = s16y2m80b0ols:b. 23 __ 11 __ 44 = 209 c. 111 __ 111 __ 3 = 74 d. 1 __ 2 __ 3 __ 4 __ 5 __ 6 __ 7 __ 8 __ 9 __ 0 = 0

Crack the Code One of the earliest use of codes was with the cipher disk, invented in Italy around 1470 by Leon Battista Alberti. The use of codes and ciphers in the military dates to the beginning of the US Army Signal Corps which was formed in June of 1860. Puzzle Time!! Can you Crack the Code? 1. My 1st number is the 3RD multiple of my 4th number. 2. My 2nd number is sum of the 1st number by itself. 3. My 4th Number is the 3rd Multiple of My 3rd Number. 4. My 3rd Number is 3.

WHAT IF… What if I could do something for my country? I am terrified, petrified, mortified and stupefied In dismay, I was surfing the internet for a probable every morning whilst feeling a centrifugal and solution for the lack of uninterrupted electricity, and I centripetal force in my gut at the same time. Oh took refuge in Isaac Asimov’s fiction story “Reason”, no, I am not alluding towards my anxiety of giving which intrigued me. It talks about how a space station any honourable exam, instead I am frantic every could transmit energy collected from the Sun to various morning that the power may go out any minute, planets using microwave beams. On digging further, I and neither my computer nor my modem would discovered scientists are already thinking about SBSP support my school from home. I live in the (Space based solar power), which is eco-friendly, while outskirts of Mumbai and we’re not as privileged at the same time can reach the remotest of villages. to receive boundless electricity as Mumbaikars The concept is based on sending satellites into space do. There is occasional power outage due to with solar panels on them, converting the solar energy maintenance work, faults in high tension towers into microwave rays or laser emitters, and receiving it or transformers, or inadequacy of power supply back on Earth. I was wondering if I can be part of this because of wastage of electricity due to high great transformation project, if I can install one cost of transmission. However, I am not receiving antenna in my area, if I can do something to complaining as I realise the quotient of amenities make the project cost efficient, if each village can deteriorates with every kilometre we travel convert the transmitted microwave into electricity, and away from Mumbai. if everyone could receive uninterrupted electricity, leveraging the fact that there is no night in space.

However, the castle that I am building in space, as contribute in making the satellite system robust my frolicsomeness venture, isn't possible without enough to help strengthen all the institutions of financing. All good ideas and research institutes in India, and remove the name of India from any list India are highly sponsored by the Government, of corruption that shames us in global platforms. including the approximate Rs.7,775 crore capital allocation for ISRO's Rs.13,479 crore budget in What if, what if we could run away? What if, what 2020. Government in turn collects money as direct if we could leave today? And when the lights start or indirect tax from our citizens. It is surprising to flashing like a photo booth, with the stars know that only up-to 3% of Indian Citizens are the exploding, we’ll be fireproof. Well, that doesn’t Indian Direct tax Obelix, that is they bear the become possible in Troye Sivan’s “Youth” song as entire burden of direct tax. There is work to be well. So, I need to start working beyond theories done here as the Central Board of Direct Tax has and put Kipling’s famous “If” into practice. While I been worried about direct tax collection for quite figure out how, all I know now is for me, my work some time now, as tax evasion is profound, and is should be focused on building a better India from not a sign of a good citizenship. Moreover, direct both moral and scientific efficiency point of view. tax collection target remains short by almost 15%, My fetish isn’t limited to ensuring uninterrupted and ISRO budget can improve by 13% to level up electricity supply or nabbing tax evaders but could with NASA, with improved tax collection. In 2019 expand. Helping the country to groom responsible the IT department, in its first attempt, used citizens as per the Indian constitution, and changing satellite images to nab tax evaders and curb tax their lives for the better with cheap yet qualitative evasion and other frauds of up to Rs 15 crore, as alternatives is my goal, and I wish I can make my per TOI report. It is a baby step and I wish I could, life useful in such ventures.

Finesse with Fingers Polio – A View Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can infect a person's spinal cord, causing paralysis (can't move parts of the body). Polio is transmitted through contaminated water or food, or contact with an infected person. Many people who are infected with the poliovirus don't become sick and have no symptoms. However, those who do become ill develop paralysis, which can sometimes be fatal. In about 0.5% of cases, it moves from the gut to affect the central nervous system and there is muscle weakness resulting in a flaccid paralysis. The most important step in eradication of polio is interruption of endemic transmission of poliovirus. Stopping polio transmission has been pursued through a combination of routine immunization , supplementary immunization campaigns and surveillance of possible outbreaks. Vaccine: A vaccine trains your immune system to produce antibodies( proteins that fight disease), exactly like it would if you were exposed to the disease. But vaccines work without making us sick from the infection because vaccines typically contain pieces of dead, weakened, or lab-made substances that stimulate your immune system. Prevention of polio spread is accomplished by vaccination. There are two kinds of polio vaccine —oral polio vaccine (OPV), which uses weakened poliovirus, and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), which is injected. The OPV is less expensive and easier to administer, and can spread immunity beyond the person vaccinated, creating contact immunity. It has been the predominant vaccine used. Nigeria is the latest country to have officially stopped endemic transmission of wild poliovirus, with its last reported case in 2016. Wild poliovirus has been eradicated in all continents except Asia, and as of 2020, Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries where the disease is still classified as endemic.

WHO is a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the largest private-public partnership for health, which has reduced polio by 99%. Polio now survives only among the world's poorest and most marginalized communities, where it stalks the most vulnerable children. UNICEF's role is to procure and deliver vaccines and support countries in developing and implementing communication and social mobilization strategies. Vaccine at birth Administration of an OPV dose at birth (zero dose) serves as a 'priming dose' since it is not protective to the vaccine (i.e., it fails to induce protective levels of neutralizing antibodies owing to interfering maternal antibodies and secretary IgA in breast milk) but still manage to produce enough memory B cells It was found that administration of OPV on 3rd day of life leads to seroconversion (seroconversion is the time period during which a specific antibody develops and becomes detectable in the blood) in 15.3% of infants to all three polio virus types by the age of 6 weeks, and highest sero response was seen for polio virus type 1.Thus the study has established that immunization of newborns with TOPV is a safe and effective means for improving protection against the disease. X - PLORED A Trip to Tapola During the winter, we went to one of the best places ever known as the Mini Kashmir of Maharashtra i.e., Tapola, by road. It is 29 km away from Mahabaleshwar. People like to visit Mahabaleshwar as it is a cold place, famous for sight seeing and strawberries. But we visited a new place called Tapola and explored this beauty of nature. It is situated near the Koyana river. Tapola is established due to the backwaters of the Koyana river. Due to some natural conditions, people are not able to cultivate crops properly. So, the government allowed them to start a new business of tourism. We enjoyed a tour through the dazzling backwaters of the Koyana river. The next day, we did kayaking, boating and swimming. The water was very pleasant and calm. Nature felt really good. I felt like I was in heaven when I went there.

MOVING AHEAD 3D PRINTING  3D printing is a way of creating three dimensional (3D) objects by combining two fundamental innovations: Digital + Additive Manufacturing.  When we print a page on a printer, it has two dimensions: the front and back of the page. 3D printing adds a third dimension, i.e. volume.  The starting point for any 3D printing process is a 3D digital model, which is created using a variety of 3D software programmes like 3D CAD.  The model is then ‘sliced’ into layers to convert the design into a file readable by the 3D printer.  The material processed by the 3D printer is then layered according to the design and the process to create the object.  Functional plastics, metals, ceramics and sand are, now, all routinely used for industrial prototyping and production applications.  Research is also being conducted for 3D printing bio materials and different types of food.
