Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio Sadegh Amiri was born in 1987 in Tehran. As a child, he was particularly interested in photography and he owed that interest to his father. when he was 11, as a model student, he won a Sega console for his outstand- ing studies but due to his passion for photography, he ended up trading his prize with the third-place winner who had received a camera. After attaining his degree in accounting, Sadegh pursued his childhood passion of becoming a professional photographer. He worked for vari- ous newspapers & magazines, and media companies for a number of years where his work was published in a plethora of journals and other published works. During this time Sadegh cultivated an interest in documentary and street photography in which field he could tell the story of people from all walks of life. In addition to participating in various international exhibitions and festi- vals, Sadegh has also been successful in international competitions. In 2018, he won the gold prize at the Metro Photo Challenge competition in Mexico. Sadegh placed first in the People’s award and Global Prize. Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio Street Photography I’m always looking at the different angles I can unpack from a solitary idea. I think like a narrator – revealing tales of life and leading his au- dience into a world of events, people, and then to that solitary moment where we all stop, reflect and wonder. Where we try to make sense of what we are viewing, try to make sense of what this existential journey is all about for all of us. The marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street. Street photography is one of the most challenging but, at the same time, one of the most rewarding genres of photography. Documenting peo- ple in their everyday environment is not easy – it requires patience, hard work, and sometimes even some bravery to be able to approach and photograph complete strangers. 4

Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio Documentary Photography For a long time, my focus lay more on writing. Over time, I began to un- derstand how wonderfully images and the written word can complement each other and how specific photos could express things in a more sub- tle, visceral, or immediate way than text. I first realized that my photog- raphy had some actual potential when outlets began to run images I had taken to accompany my writing pieces. The way I photograph and what I photograph is consistent with who I am. Documentary Photography is an umbrella term encapsulating a wide range of approaches. However, the term usually refers to art that cap- tures a real moment, conveying a message about the world. As opposed to photojournalism, which concentrates on breaking news events, it typi- cally focuses on an ongoing issue or story seen through a series of pho- tographs, drawing attention to difficult or dangerous world issues which require some form of remedial or political action. 12

Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio Portrait Photography A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it. It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are. The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do. My editing process in portrait photography begins during the shoot. I al- ways try to get the perfect exposure directly in the camera. Great make- up is also very helpful. At home, I import my pictures to Lightroom and choose the best pictures, if I didn’t do that already at the location together with the model. Then I import my/our favorites to Photoshop to edit the skin and if necessary, I remove distracting elements. Then I go back to Lightroom and edit the color, brightness, etc. Here I use my own presets. 18

Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio Architecture Photography Often, architecture photographers focus on shooting things like govern- ment buildings, museums, and historic landmarks. These types of struc- tures are usually able to offer interesting or impressive architecture. Also, old building photography makes for captivating images. That in- cludes well-maintained historic sites that offer examples of classic ar- chitecture, as well as run-down or abandoned buildings that show their age in different ways. architecture Photography Starts by simply walking around the outside of the building and exploring the inside (if possible). Also, some research on the building and its history. Learning about how it was built and how it’s been used. 28

Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio “The Revenants” Collection I AIN’T AFRAID OF DYING ANYMORE. WE HAVE DONE IT ALREADY This collection is referred to as a tradition- al ceremony in Iran. Gel Mali is a tradition common among the people of Luristan in which they spread the mud on their bodies. This tradition is mainly done in mourning ceremonies like losing family members or religious rituals, especially Muharram. In Ashura, the west- ern provinces of Iran, such as Luristan, Ilam, and Kermanshah, hold this ceremo- ny, and people rub the mud on their shoul- ders and heads to show the depth of their grief. Still, in Khoram Abbad, people rub it on their whole bodies. Some of them do not remove the mud from their body till the end of the night to participate in the mourning ceremony of Sham-e Ghariban (the evening of the 10th day of Muharram). 32

Sadegh Amiri | Portfolio Minimal Collection what’s also very important to me is in photography, whatever I try to do, I try to communicate just one thing. One story, one simple message. So, as I use the minimal objects and elements in a story, it’s easier to com- municate. That’s why in my images I try to come up with a minimalist background, minimalist setting or something like that. The fewer objects you need to identify, the easier it will be for you to understand the mes- sage of the story I am trying to portray each time. My approach is to show the true beauty of the subject with the intention to minimize any distractions that surround it. I always felt unsatisfied with my earlier work and would get frustrated with objects in the frame, almost wishing they weren’t there. I now know that this was because I hadn’t found my true style. When I found a subject or space that was bare, I really felt at home. Becoming aware of this, I creatively found my- self. 36
