TALAYE JEIHONIAN Mirror Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī23

TALAYE JEIHONIAN 24

TALAYE JEIHONIANThis story was inspired by the ancient Iranian tales from the Six Books of the Masnavi calledAyenen in Persian, which figuratively means «Self-observation».In his stories, Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī also Known as Mawlānā uses different animals forrepresenting different inner characteristics of the human beings. For depicting the story, I attempted that the story is read by readers in a new way and raised thequestion «Which animal character of the short stories would they choose if they had a choice?»As human beings, we are free to choose the type of our character and clothing.Sometimes, our destiny gives its hand to us and makes friends out of the people who were ourenemies in the past. The world may appear to us such a toy for children. The story has two narrators.Narrator 1: A camel which had a dream about a little girl one night; a girl with whom it played inchildhood. One day in the morning, the camel woke up with the tweets of the sparrows and de-cides to find the girl. It decided to go to market and buy a gift for her. The camel met many peoplerecommending something as a gift to buy, but it sought a more valuable gift. After a while in search of a gift, the camel encountered a shopkeeper wearing lavish clothing, who recommended a beautiful mirror (that is in the other world in a far way). It got so happy andthought that the girl would remember it every time she sees her face in the mirror.Narrator 2: A girl who wishes to dance (here, the narrator is me, the story teller)The girl heard the sound of the birds singing in the sky and followed it. She wanted to have a newexperience. Curiously, she separated from the world to which she belongs and went high into thesky. She belonged to water.A number of mice took her to the sky with balloons. When the girl reached the sky she understood that the sound she had heard was the recordedsound of a phonograph, not the natural sound of the sparrows. The girl was held captive by thecreatures of the sky. They spun her around repeatedly so that the girl would dance, but the girlgot annoyed and repentant and decided to stand against them. She opted for returning to water again.By seeing the crying girl, the sparrows in the sky and came to help her. Eventually, the girl releasedherself from the balloons and fell into the sea. She remembered the memories of her childhood;the memories of a small camel with which she used to play and dance on its humps freely. Nowat last the girl returned to her home and the camel found her after walking a long distance.«I have brought you a mirror so that you remember me every time you look at yourself in themirror», the camel said. The girl was now happy and could see a truth in the mirror at that time.«That was not the bird of the sky. That was the bird of the sea.»«Those who hurt the girl were, in fact, the people who sold the mirror to the camel»Sometimes, all things in the life joint together so that one get to know something. Sometimes, itis necessary for someone to separate from others. The sooner we learn the sooner will they gettheir freedom.Every person will end their life in the world that they have made and lived in, no matter what kindof appearance they have or clothing they wear. So, it is up us to decide about which character we want to personate in our short story of life. 25

TALAYE JEIHONIANAIDS Conceptual Exhibition (June 2002) which was held in myuniversity, I presented an installation. As an art student, whatI tried to represent in my project is to illustrate the harshnessof this controversial problem and propagate pre-marriagevoluntary HIV test as a solution,a few live Cockroach thatmove on a wedding dress. Due to the sharp increase in thenumber of juveniles at the age of marriage affected by HIVvirus and their ignorance about their disease in my country, aneed for a mandatory pre-marriage HIV test become a socialconcern those days. 33
