Fenil Shah (Senior Executive, Accounts) Ladakh : A Dream Destination! A trip to Ladakh is a dream come true and River and its tributaries, a place having lakes at a staggering height of 14000ft. I always wanted to visit the place ever The place is full of natural hues. Ladakh is since I read about the Kargil war. After so beautiful once you’re there you don’t years of unsuccessful plans this dream want to leave. finally came true in September 2019. It was a 7-8 day trip so we had to cut the road trip from Manali and land directly in Leh from Delhi. To prevent us from getting hit by Acute On the day we landed we could not stop Mountain Sickness (AMS) we had already ourselves and went out roaming the place, taken doses of Diamox two days prior to which is not advisable because of the our BOM-DEL-IXL flight. The aircraft cuts through the snow-clad mountains with the IAF motto ‘Touch the Sky with Glory’. The people are very loving and hospitable and treat their guests with utmost care and respect. They love serving different variations of Maggi. We explored a lot of places in Ladakh but I would like to highlight a short story about a small village that we visited - Turtuk! Every moment of being in Ladakh is It is one of the northernmost villages in breathtaking! It is truly wonderful. The India on the banks of the Shyok River (a evergreen words by Amir Khusro for the tributary of the Indus) sandwiched Kashmir Valley hold true for Ladakh too between the Himalayas and the Karakoram ‘Gar firdaus bar-rue zamin ast, hami asto, mountain ranges. Surrounded by tall hamin asto, hamin asto’ (If there is heaven mountains and clear blue skies it is on earth, it’s here, it’s here, it’s here). nature’s cradle. There’s a palace of the 17th century rulers which is now a part It is a place with beautiful mountains museum. It is not on the itinerary for through which flow the historic Indus majority Indian tourists as it is a very long 22

route but is a place which should not be missed if you’re in that part of the country. A lot of foreign tourists can be found spending days in the calmness of the village. Turtuk was under Pakistan’s control until the 1971 war post which India took control. Turtuk is the last Indian outpost after which Gilgit-Baltistan begins. In spite of the red alert patrolling and difficult weather conditions, the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and Indian Army – the Siachen Warriors are doing a fabulous job maintaining peace in Ladakh. The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has made the region accessible by digging out roads at the most unlikely locations. One sign at the Khardung-la pass actually reads, ‘Your adventure is our daily routine’. One must visit Ladakh - a dream destination for all! 23
