Reproductive System Function : ➔ Females : this system is designed to specifically create life. ➔ Males : the main function is to facilitate conception. This is also known as the fertilization of the ovum by a sperm. 51

Reproductive System Key Terms ➔ Cervic/o : Neck, cervix (neck of uterus) ➔ Salping/o : Eustachian (auditory) tube, fallopian tube ➔ Ov/o : Ovum, egg ➔ Orchid/o : Testis, testicle ➔ Oophor/o : Ovary ➔ Men/o : Meses, menstruation ➔ Mamm/o : Breast ➔ Gynec/o : Female, women ➔ Colp/o : Vagina ➔ Prostat/o : Prostate gland 52

Reproductive System 53 ➔ Scrotum : this is the sac-like pouch of skin that is located between the male’s thighs and protects, supports, and encloses the testis. ➔ Spermatic cord : this carries the sperm towards the ejaculatory duct and the pelvic region. ➔ Semen : this is a fluid that contains sperm. This is expelled out of the penis during sexual intercourse. ➔ Seminal vesicles : these are 2 glands which are located at the base of the urinary bladder. ➔ Glans penis : this is the sensitive, soft area which is located on the distal end of the penis. ➔ Menstruation : the is the shedding of the innermost layer of the uterus, which happens monthly. ➔ Gestation : this is the period of time where human development and growth in the uterus goes from conception to birth. ➔ Hymen : this is the thin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. ➔ Mammary glands : these are the glands located in the chest that produces milk and colostrum after childbirth. ➔ Perimetrium : this is the outermost layer of the uterus.

Reproductive System Diseases/Conditions ➔ Azoospermia : this is when the semen has no sperm which leads to infertility. ➔ Oligospermia : this is when there is a low amount of sperm in the semen. This can affect fertility. ➔ Infertility : this is the inability of produce or conceive offspring. ➔ Menorrhagia : this is excessive menstrual bleeding, this could lead to anemia. 54

Reproductive System Careers ➔ Gynecologist : this is a kind of doctor that specializes in the care of the female reproductive organs and the treatment of related disorders. ➔ Doula : this is a professional who has been certified and trained to help a birthing family before, during, and after the birth of the baby. 55
