The Potentate’s Perspective Summer’s here…and Medinah has been very busy! So, in typical Midwest fashion we went directly from Winter to Summer and broke a record for thewettest May ever, but that didn’t slow down “Mighty Medinah”. We have had many successfulevents since our last magazine was published. We had a full house March 23rd for our Easter Egg Hunt. We had some new entertainment this yearalong with an appearance by the Easter Bunny. “Mr. Puppet” put on a great puppet show for the kidsand we had a Raceway game with electric cars. The Therapy Dogs and the ice cream were a big hittoo. The Ladies Flower Show sold out as did the Marshal’s Whiskey Tasting on April 6th. It was a busynight at Medinah. The Nobility Ball April 14th was also sold out! The Motor Corps and Rick Miller from IdealEntertainment turned Medinah into a Nobility Disco Party that lasted late into the night. A bigTHANKS to everyone that helped and attended. What a party!!!At the Spring Ceremonial on April 28th Patrick Robin and the Ceremonial Divan put on a perfectperformance for our candidates and their families. They all deserve Oscars. Thank You.On May 12th Debbie Jo and I along with Phil Smith, Tracy Burcham (Peanut) Director of the Clownsand his Lady Nui, Eric Coners (Giggles) and the Therapy Dogs Director Jay Reed and Steve Meyn, made a few presentations to Gene Simmons from the band “Kiss” at a small venue in Chicago. Wealso received a nice donation to Medinah from a guest in the audience. That same night, in the Oasis, we hosted Karaoke Night. We packed the house and had lots of laughs. continued on the next page….Summer 2018 3

The Ladies Fashion Show on May 19th “Bling it On” had our Motor Corps presenting the Colors for thePledge of Allegiance, the Highlanders playing tunes that made all the Ladies smile, the Police Unitkeeping a close watch on everything, the Photography Club taking lots of great pictures, and theTherapy Dogs escorting the models down the runway, which was a big hit. The Fashion Show broughtin a record amount of money for Debbie Jo’s project for the Hospital. Thank you to everyone formaking this a huge success.Memorial Day began with breakfast at the Wauconda Lodge. They serve an outstanding breakfast andalso feed the sailors from Great Lakes every year. Thanks for a great job Wauconda Lodge. The Wauconda Parade went off without a hitch. We had great attendance as we showed off all theMedinah Parade Units. What a beautiful day we had. Thank you to all the Clubs and Units forparticipating.Hospital Day on June 3rd was fantastic! The hospital was in full swing with Shriners, their families, andfriends. There were activities, entertainment, and refreshments for all. Isabella Rose, the 2017-2018National Patient Ambassador for Shriners Hospital, was the guest speaker. She reminded us all why wedo what we do...what a great success story! Also, the weather couldn’t have been better for the world’sshortest parade.Keep up to date at www.medinah.org for all the current events we have planned this year. Also, check out all the new pictures taken by the Photography Club and posted by our new webmasterWalter Bamert. TEMPLE COMMUNICATIONSA MESSAGE FROM MEDINAH’S FIRST LADYI can’t tell you how happy and thrilled I am on how successful our fashion show was….and it’s all dueto you! To the Medinah ladies, the units, the clubs, the Police Unit, Medinah Motor Corps, MedinahHighlanders, the Medinah Therapy Dogs, and the Divan men: a HUGE THANK YOU for all your help inmaking our Fashion Show, “Bling It On”, such a hit. We raised a record amount of money to gotowards the new Sports Medicine program at Shriners Hospital in Chicago. And the bling waseverywhere – even on the models! In addition to all of the upcoming Official Visits, parades, and karaoke nights, there are two fun eventsfor the Ladies that I am really looking forward to. I hope you all plan on attending our GLSACeremonial Session in Grand Rapids, Michigan because my Disco~Pajama Party is BACK! What betterway to have fun than to put on your pajamas, show off your bling, dance, and have fun with ourShriners.I’ve also talked about wanting the ladies of Medinah to have a lot of fun this year. I am going to be“Blinging It Back” to you with an event only for the ladies. Block your calendar on Saturday,September 29th and meet us on the patio by the Oasis for “Everything’s Better With Bling!”. I hope youcan attend, because it’s a night of fun all about you!Until I see you next, may the Bling be with you!Debbie Jo KissaneMedinah’s 2018 First LadyTHE RECORDER’S MESSAGEGood Day Nobles and Ladies,Our parade season is well under way and I hope all of our units, clubs and committees have a safe andprosperous season. We have made some great progress here at our temple: the outside of our building brickwork and entryarea has been power washed and sealed, our landscaping cleanup for the spring and summer has beencompleted, we have installed new updated software for our key fob system, and we now have a key fobentry from the Oasis Patio (and yes all of your key fobs will work.) Our new web site is up and runningand our Medinah Magazine is now available for all to view. If you have not visited our new site pleasetake the time to see some of the new features and we have more improvements on the way. We havemade significant progress on cleaning out our back storage area and still have more to clear. Ouroutside LED lights are about 65 percent completed and should be finished by the end of July or earlyAugust. We have many events happening during our summer season so please check the Medinah websiteCalendar for any changes or additions. The Grand Masters Festival is the 30th of June and we are seeinga number of petitions for it. This festival has not been held in almost 14 years. The Imperial Session isbut a month away, my how time flies. Please remember our Hospital Patient Transportation fund is in desperate need of funds. The high costsfor transportation, food, lodging, and the increase in need has drained our fund.Lastly, if you have a meeting in any of our temple rooms, please do not leave food or pizza boxes layingaround - we get gnats and fruit flies. Remember that other units, clubs, and committees also use thosevery same rooms. And if you smoke a cigar outside please don’t throw your cigar butt on the ground.Take pride in your beautiful temple. Until Next Time Nobles 5 Fred S. Kaufman Recorder Medinah ShrineSummer 2018

The photo known as the \"Editorial Without Words\" is probably the most recognized symbol ofShriners Hospitals, yet it was taken almost by accident. Randy Dieter, the photographer, recalled that in 1970, he had been on assignment covering Hadi Temple's annual outing forhandicapped children at the now-defunct Mesker Amusement Park in Evansville, Indiana. \"I was taking shots of the midway and was using my telephoto lens,\" Dieter said. \"I saw a local Shriner walking by carrying a little girl in one hand and her crutches in the other. My camera wouldn't fire. Then they were too close for my lens. I ran past them, but the camera jammed. I had to take my last shot as they walked by. It was the end of the roll. If I had to think about it, I wouldn't have come up with something like that. Fate guides you.\" \"It still seems unreal,\" said Bobbi Jo Wright, the little girl in the photo. \"I have many wonderful memories of the years I was a patient at the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and remember all the fun activities. I was born with cerebral palsy, which resulted in many orthopedic problems that made walking difficult. I had many surgeries at the St. Louis Hospital. They greatly improved my ability to walk.\" Bobbi Jo received her B.A. in English from Anderson University. She is active in her church and teaches SundaySchool. \"I use a cane when I go shopping,\" she said. \"If I'm walking on grassy areas, I usecrutches.\"Today, the famous photo is an integral part of the Shriners Hospitalslogo, and has been reproduced on stained-glass windows, mosaics, tietacs, pins, and in statues. A larger-than-life replica of the \"EditorialWithout Words\" stands outside the International Shrine Headquartersbuilding in Tampa.NOTE: Noble Albert Lanier Hortman, the man in the photo carryingBobbi Jo, passed away on December 6, 2009, two months shy of his 81stbirthday. He lived a full life and was one of the fortunate ones to make aplace in history that will live in time immortal. Noble Al Hortman, 2005Summer 2018 13

Dear Friend, When Tommy was born missing his ankle and foot due to a vascular disruption in his left leg, his parents feared he might never learn to crawl or take his first steps. But thanks to generous supporters like you, Tommy has been experiencing a childhood with \"no limits\". Shriners Hospitals for Children® has treated Tommy since he was an infant. Always active, he was fitted with his first prosthesis when just 1 and he has been on the go ever since! Tommy loves wrestling, soccer, riding his bike, riding his scooter, and climbing. For nearly 96 years, Shriners Hospitals for Children has been making life better for children facing orthopaedic conditions, severe burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. And because of the kindness of good friends like you, we’re able to care for every child who needs us regardless of their families’ ability to pay. Tommy’s parents and parents of other patients can count on us for help, because we can count on you. Together, we’re giving children hope and courage — the support they need to live full, active and happy lives. Thank you for being part of our Shriners Hospitals for Children family. With best wishes and warm regards, Gary J. Bergenske Chairman of the Board Shriners Hospitals for Children14 Medinah Shriner

GENIESWOW how time flies…50 years ago, in May of1968, Wilbur Schenk and Wayne Gundlachjoined the Medinah Shriners. They jumpedright in and joined the Northwest Shrine Club.At the time, Northwest Shrine Club was one ofthe largest Shine Cubs at Medinah.Wilbur had a vision after watching the TVshow “I Dream of Jeannie” ~ he had the ideaof Genies on a Flying Carpet. He talked aboutthis crazy idea with some of the members ofthe Northwest SC and five Nobles took thebait: Ricard Dickens, Wayne Gundlach, JimRachel, Chuck Carden, and Chuck Peterson. These great nobles are the creators of the first flying carpet Ver.# 1., a go-cart frame with acouple of sticks strapped to the side, and a piece of rug to lay across the top. Now this the late60’s and the SUV at that time was a station wagon, half on the roof, half in the car, strapdown the kids, and off to a parade!! Now the legend has it that after every parade the foldinglawn chairs would come out (you know the ones with the colorful crisscross strapping wrappedaround aluminum tubing) they would open the cooler, named the “War Wagon”, enjoy someCamels Milk, and talk about how they could improve the Flying Carpets. Sometime around1974, the current version (Ver. #231) of the Flying Carpets was created and is what you seetoday. Some of those carpet frames are still in use today!Over the years, many Genies have come and gone, never forgotten, always remembered bysome story, good or bad! Many members of the Flying Carpets have been related, brothers,brother-in-laws, cousins, My Family it’s My Dad, and nephews. But doesn’t matter how you arerelated once you become a Genie…You are Family!! You’re a Genie for life!! On occasions wedo adopt lost Nobles, or their ladies, right Coletta? This year we are celebrating 50 years, just like many units and clubs have done in the past. Each Noble that has been involved with a unit or club, finds themselves with Pride, the Pride of not just being a member of the Shrine, but being active, being apart of “this is that we do”. For me it’s the friendships, not only with in the Flying Carpets, but with other units and clubs of Medinah, and members of other temples. 50 years ago men joined the Shrine and became involved with the Flying Carpets and this year we will remember them. We also celebrate our Ladies. Every other year we have aLadies Appreciation Dinner where we invite all past Genies and their Ladies. We also invite thewidows of the Genies whom have been called from their labors. Like I said before...onceyou’re a Genie, you are family for life!!Today we are very fortunate to have three of the founding members with us: WayneGundlach, Wilbur Schenk, and Richard Dickens. Both Wilbur and Wayne are also celebrating 50years as members of the Medinah Shriners. If you see them, please congratulate them on 50years. Now Richard Dickens, he has been a member of Medinah for 59 years, Richard has alsocompleted a couple of parades this year, making him the one and only Genie that has flownhis Carpet for 50 YEARS!!! continued on page 31…Summer 2018 29

GENIES (continued)On a personal note, I grew up in Berwyn which is the home of The Houby Day Parade. Mybirthday is in October, around the same time as the Houby Day Parade. The parade was on aSunday the same time that I would have my birthday party. I remember walking up toCermak Road with my cousins to watch the parade. My favorite part of the parade was theFlying Carpets!!...I was just 5 years old.On August 11, 2018 the Medinah Flying Carpets will be hosting a 50th Anniversary PARTY!! Wewill be reminiscing about the past, telling stories, laughing, and toasting those whom havegone before us. We will also be recognizing the Genius Creators of the Flying Carpets!! Pleaseread our flyer for more information. This will be a great event and I hope that you can joinus!!If you are interested in flying a carpet and joining on the fun, please call me or one of the members of the Flying Carpets. We are looking for new members that can put together the100th Anniversary of the Flying Carets… I will leave notes forya…Remember we are all in this together. News of Units, Committees, & SC’s HIGHLANDERS Happy summertime Nobles! The Highlanders are having a great spring and our summer season is cranking up. Just last week we had our family picnic and BBQ at the Oasis. It was a great time with food, fellowship, and a chance to play for and thank our families for the time we are away at parades and practices. Our most recent parades were Park Ridge and Wauconda and the temperature contrasts were pure Chicago. Park Ridge was all of 45 degrees and drizzly while a week later it was 90-95 in Wauconda. Crazy!! We had 21 on the street for Wauconda’s parade, including 13 pipes. Our pipe corps has grown with a number of new and motivated Nobles which is great. If you haven’t heard us lately check us out. Other recent events included playing for the Streamwood Memorial Day ceremony which is always a moving reminder of the cost of freedom. And playing for the kids at the hospital is also a moving reminder of why we do what we do. Yours in the fellowship, John Ludwig LEGION OF HONOR As we are aware from our May meeting we will be dark for June and July. We were present for the Wauconda Parade and the Hospital Day festivities. Our next meeting will be August 1st. We will be selling tickets in support of selling chances for our various raffles. We will need all hands on deck to accomplish these activities. Please reply if you will be able to help sell tickets at this event. We are having two raffles for various items and we will finalize all details at the August 1st meeting. Also, a reminder to sell your tickets for the Sportsman's Raffle as our unit will earn $5.00 back for each book sold: another opportunity to raise money for our unit. Please send all monies and ticket stubs to Scott Olson. Enjoy the weather for these next two months! Respectfully, EMIL DENEMARK, Scribe 32 Medinah Shriner

News of Units, Committees, & SC’s MOTOR CORPS Medinah Motor Corps is in full swing for the current parade season. Following the Geneva Shrine Parade on Sunday, June 24th, we have a series of Independence Day parades scheduled for multiple riding teams to participate in - all hands-on-deck! Special thanks go to our Parade Chairman Bill Kurz for his hard work in organizing all of this. The details of dates and start times can be found on our calendar at www.MedinahMotorCorps.org Before the bikes even cool down from the July 4th parades, the Competition Team will be loading them for the trip to Daytona Beach to compete at the International Association of Shrine Motor Corps starting on the 15th of July to the 17th at the Daytona International Speedway in conjunction with Shriners International Imperial Session. Please wish the competition team, Patrick Temesvary, Chuck Wilson, Chris Rupert, Chris Goldin, Kevin Peto and Donald Shaffer - good luck! Past Commander and Medinah’s Captain of the Guard Jay Alfirevic will also be in Daytona helping run the competitions as IASMC Secretary / Treasurer. In addition, congratulations to Lester Szkodzinski whom has been nominated as Sergeant at Arms for the International Association of Shrine Motor Corps Board. Speaking of congratulations…MMC would like to congratulate Chris Rupert who has taken the reigns as Secretary of Medinah Motor Corps. Medinah Motor Corps is proud to have been able to participate in this year’s fashion show as Color Guard. Congratulations to all the ladies who made this event so successful. Past Commander Donald Shaffer and his Lady Sue Czubala have volunteered to organize this year’s Medinah’s Family Picnic on August 19th at Medinah. Thank you for your hard work. Be sure to attend this fun event. Bring the whole family! MMC had the privilege to escort the East – West Shrine Game players to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago on June 13th. Thank you players for your hard word. Keep those seat belts buckled! (just a little humor between the players and MMC – you had to be there ). Special thank you to ISP for your assistance. 34 Medinah Shriner

ONIONSMedinah’s 2018 onion selling season has just come to a close. 74,000 pounds of thosedelicious Vidalia onions have been sold and distributed through the hard work of Medinah’sunit’s, clubs, and committees and the men and women associated with each. Medinah’scontinuing partnership with Shad, owner of The OnionMan Co. LLC of Glenville, Georgia is areal positive that cannot be taken for granted. Shad and those associated with his operationdo everything in their power to ensure that Medinah receives the highest quality onions to selland substitutes any product that is found to be unacceptable. Not only must the product be top quality but Medinah could not accomplish our onion sales ifit wasn’t for the distribution centers that we utilize on this yearly project. We are so fortunateto be working with Silbrico Corp. (Onion Central) and the Evergreen Sod Farm in Peotone. The owners of these facilities have been working with Medinah for years and they never askfor more than a Thank You. We could not do what we do without them. The Noble spearheading this operation and insuring that everything works as smoothly aspossible is Medinah’s own Onion Chairman John Joseph aka “Jay-Jay” the clown. I have beenassisting Jay-Jay since Don Marquardt was our Potentate and really understand and appreciatehow much time and effort is expended by him in this position. He is in constant contact withthe grower, distribution centers, arranges for shipping, is in charge of scheduling for receivingand delivery, does the billing and invoicing for the clubs, units and committees and assists inunloading and loading the onions. Thank you so much Jay-Jay for a job well done!Everyone I spoke to had success selling onions this year. We understand most groups soldout on the first weekend. This year everything went fairly smooth. We had our onionsdelivered on Wednesday and Thursday. As always pre-sales were an easy and fast way to sellonions. Since many people are empty-nesters those ½ bags were popular again this year andgenerated one dollar more than the sale of one 10 lb bag. Another great concept and big hitwas an idea used by the members of Lake County Shrine Club when potential customers reallydidn’t want onions. They were asked to purchase a bag and the Club would donate it to aSoup Kitchen or Shelter. Many bags were sold in this manner.Potentate Bill Kissane and the Divan would like to say a special thanks to the people at SilbricoCorp, Evergreen Sod Farm in Peotone, the Kankakee and Morris Shrine Clubs for meeting thetruck in Peotone, and workers at Onion Central: Rich “GOTCHA” Gottschlich, Kenny Klotz andBobby “HEY LISTEN” Drell for their help with distribution. Even the COG Jay Alfirevic came outto help for a couple of hours. We hope he returns next year. continued on page 37….Summer 2018 35

A BIG THANK YOU to the unit and club Onion Chairmen for all their hard work with the Onion Project. Thanks to Cheryl for mailing the onion bills to the units. A special thanks to Walter Bamert who helped with the Medinah website and posted our information on a special onion page. Fraternally, Lance Evans Past Potentate ORIENTAL BAND The sizzle of summer is upon us and the Oriental Band has been playing tunes at a scorching pace. Our band appeared as a might force to enhance the Spring Ceremonial with appropriate Arabic motif music. Joined by the Brass Band, we thrilled the folks in Elk Grove Village, Niles, Skokie, and Morton Grove. Our Director, Howard Giesen is indefatigable in readying us for future performances. We meet in the Music Room twice monthly, on Fridays. For more information, please contact Howard Giesen at (773) 339-2335. Bruce M. Allman ScribeSummer 2018 37

News of Units, Committees, & SC’s PAST MASTERS Several Certificates of Congratulations from Medinah were presented to Worshipful Masters who are also Shriners and there are still more scheduled to be presented this year. The Annual Senior and Junior Wardens and Senior Deacons Leadership Training Seminar was again a great success. M.W.P.G.M., Brother Tony Cracco and Brother Joe Malatia were the presenters. Their presentations were very well received by those in attendance. We had over sixty brothers in attendance. Thanks to the effort of Area DDGM, Brother Herb Lindberg, we had more Lodges in attendance than in any of the previous eight years. All I can say is, thank you a thousand times over. A special thank you to all the Directors of the Past Masters Committee who were in attendance and helped keep the event running smoothly. A very, very, very special thank you goes out to Brother Manny Roth who has chaired the event since its inception and Brother Sherwin Baker who makes sure that certificates are presented. Manny and Sherwin, you are true Masons. Also a special thanks goes Brother Paul Sliva, the best treasurer any organization could ask for. Last but not least, an extra thank you goes to Brother Sam Spector who was always available with guidance and advice when I faced a new challenge. This is my 15th and last year as Director of the Past Masters Committee. It has been an honor to serve as Director for all these years and I will continue to provide support in the future. I have presented Manny, Sherwin, Paul, and Sam special certificates of appreciation. We are planning a Ladies’ event for September. A notice for reservations will be sent out. If you have an incoming Worshipful Master or sitting Worshipful Master who is also a Shriner, our Committee will be happy to visit your Lodge and present him with a Certificate of Congratulations from Medinah. As always, Noble Sherwin Baker will be handling the certificate presentations. Please contact him at: (847) 732-8730 or [email protected]. Our Secretary is Noble David Truax. His contact information is: (630) 639-2338 or [email protected]. If you know of a Shriner who is a Past Master and is not receiving email communications, please have him contact Noble David. The Past Masters Committee is the primary link between Medinah and the local blue lodges. Dues for our Committee are only $10 per year. Please feel free to contact me by email at: [email protected] or call me at: (847) 381-7555, ext. 101 if you would like more information or would be interested in becoming a member.
