The Potentate’s Perspective Welcome May! Nobles and Ladies, Well the last note to you was “Welcome Spring”. I guess Mother Nature was not ready to put winter to rest just yet, as we had several inches of snow on April 27th for our Spring Ceremonial. Our Imperial Potentate Jim Cain and his Lady Patsy graced us with their presence all day for our Spring Ceremonial as we initiated 32 new Nobles. It was a great success thanks to Patrick Robin and his skills in directing the excellent Ceremonial Divan, coordinating the parade, and the events for the entire day! There are many moving parts to a Ceremonial. Thanks to everyone who participated! Also, a big thanks for all the Lodge work on completing the degrees so these Nobles could be raised. There were many generous donations received, including the Imperial First Ladies project, the Hospital, the Transportation fund and the Ladies Fashion show. Thanks to everyone for their generosity. The Onions will be here mid-May. Our Onion chairman, Ken Shields is back on his feet after a total knee replacement. Please be sure to pick up the Onions you ordered. Tickets are available for the Sportsman’s Raffle. Please help Medinah and sell tickets. This is our largest fund raiser of the year. Sell Sell Sell. Rick Miller has been busy getting sponsors and promoting the Sportsman’s raffle. Thanks Rick! continued on the next page…. Spring 2019 3

The Memorial Day parade in Wauconda, IL is on May 27th. Any Noble that hasn’t found a club or unit to join, the parade is a great way to see what each one does and get to know your fellow nobles. Mark your calendars for our family-friendly events: The Family Picnic is on August 19th and the Children’s Christmas party on December 7th. Keep up to date at www.medinah.org for all the current events we have planned this year, to read the magazine and to see all the pictures taken by the Photography Club. Debbie Jo and I thank you again for your support! Yours in the Faith William M . Kissane Potentate 2019 Remember to support your Blue Lodge. Shriners Hospitals for Children 2018 - 2019 National Patient Ambassador Riley Desin Riley, now age 17, was born with the genetic condition hereditary multiple exostoses (HME), which causes irregular bone growth. Exostoses are more commonly known as “bone spurs,” which typically grow on the end of long bones during childhood and adolescence. In Riley’s case, physicians discovered growths from nearly head to toe through a full body X-ray when he was 14 months old. Shortly thereafter, he was seen by Alfred V. Hess, M.D., the director of hand surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa, and became a patient of the hospital. Over time, Dr. Hess and Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa’s Chief of Staff Maureen Maciel, M.D., have performed more than a dozen surgeries to remove growths and lengthen bones in Riley’s arms and legs. Riley has been a very active patient ambassador for the Tampa Shriners Hospital for several years, and represented the hospital as a standard bearer at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas in 2017. “It was an amazing experience,” Riley said. “I’m so thankful to have been chosen, and to have had the opportunity to meet patients from other hospitals. I’ll always remember it.” Riley is very generous, and eager to help others. He mentors Theodore, another child with the same rare condition, which Riley describes as being “one of the best things that happened to me this year.” Theodore’s mom has said that meeting Riley and his family gave them hope. Riley’s father, Rick, and the rest of the family have actively supported a golf tournament organized by Rick’s former employer. Since 2002, the C&W Charity Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Riley’s parents are thankful for the constant care provided by the Tampa Shriners Hospital staff. They have seen drastic improvements over the years, which has enabled the high school student to remain active in basketball and other physical activities. “I will always have this condition, which has given me a new perspective on life,” said Riley. “This disorder isn’t a crutch; it isn’t April 2019 an excuse. It’s a reminder of all the amazing people I have met.” Riley, Connor, & Alec 18 Medinah Shriner

News of Units, Committees, & SC’s CLOWNS It is now the well into the New Year and there seems to be no lack of things going on with the Medinah Clowns. The year began with the continued appointment of Tracy “Peanut” Burcham as the Captain of the Guard. With the passing of our High Priest & Prophet in the Divan, Peanut was elected to fill the vacancy. We have a new Appearance Chairman, Del “Dilly” Detweiller. Let me tell you he has come prepared to be a very active member of the Medinah Clown Unit. So far, with the full support and backing of his Lady Tammy “Cutie” Detweiller, he has organized a fundraiser, attended clown school, parades, appearances and meetings. His motivation and excitement has had a very positive impact on the entire unit. Good job and continued success to Dilly and Cutie. Our Director John “Jay Jay” Joseph has been elected and installed as President of the International Shrine Clown Association. He has traveled to the Northeast Clown School over the last few years to represent ISCA. Little known fact: the school is in January and both Jay Jay and his Lady Judy were able to experience the Nor’easter weather. Glad you made it back safely to the Midwest. Peanut brought out the March Madness fundraiser with a slight twist this year. The participation by the temple members was tremendous. Thank you to all who participated. The MCU Joeys traveled to Milwaukee to “Clown Around” with the Tripoli clown unit. We piled into the MCU van and off we went. The hospitality, fellowship, and laughter had by all energizes the soul. All this and we hadn’t even left the parking lot. The Medinah Clowns walked around the circus floor and interacted with the young and young at heart. There was a large group from Medinah Temple that attended the Saturday event with their families. There was also face-painting, camel and elephant rides available. We must have had a really good time because it was so quiet on the ride home. A huge THANKS to Medinah’s Oriental Guide Jay Alfirevic for organizing this wonderful trip. March is the month we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the Medinah Clown Unit is no different. The MCU participated in the Elmhurst St. Pat’s parade in grand style. Of course, there is a dedicated group that visit the Shriners Hospital for Children – Chicago every Wednesday. The regulars include Jay Jay, Gotcha, StrawBarry, and Inky. These Joeys put on the grease paint in the morning, make their way to the hospital in Chicago traffic, and entertain the kids and their families while in the waiting area. The nurses, doctors, and staff are all so welcoming. Occasionally, members of the Medinah Hospital Ushers like to get involved with their age old joke, “Stop Clowning Around!” My answer is usually an emphatic “NO I won’t” which leaves most of them thinking about it. Thanks to the Medinah Divan for organizing an Easter Egg Hunt at Medinah Shrine Center. Hundreds of kids ages 0 to 12 were treated to sweet treats, candy, ice cream sundaes, popcorn, and soft drinks. And to work off all that sugar Mulligan and his Lady Beth put on a puppet and magic show for the kids. Gotcha’s Lady Paula rocked the kid’s faces with her face painting. The MCU Joeys twisted balloons of many shapes and colors. I don’t believe that a single child ever got bored with all the treats and activities to participate in. 26 Medinah Shriner

CLOWNS (continued) The Medinah Clown Unit has a long established history of being involved with the community. For the last 38 years the MCU has helped the Police Benevolent Association of North Riverside, Illinois with their Easter Egg Hunt. This year was no different. It is our belief that kids need to see and will react in a positive manner when they see adults getting involved in the community. Notice I said adults. Clowns exist to entertain and bring a smile or a laugh. More of both are needed in today’s world. Unfortunately, there were some odd looking characters at the North Riverside Easter Egg Hunt. But instead, the Joeys of the MCU ended up in the pokey. All were released with extreme prejudice. The officer couldn’t take any more silly jokes, magic tricks, or puns. Everyone we called for bail got disconnected. Not a very good phone system! Left to right: Peanut, Cy-Lo, Giggles, Mulligan, Jay Jay, Inky, StrawBarry, Cutie, Dilly and Jaymus. ORIENTAL BAND The snow shovels have finally been put away and the snow blowers covered with tarp. We are in the throes of a beautiful Spring. The Band has been meeting on the 2nd and 4th Friday evenings of each month. Practices are a good way to keep us in musical shape for the ceremonials and summer parades. Food is served on the second practice of each month (4th Friday). This summer the Oriental Band has lined up some parades. We will be playing our Middle-Eastern themed music in Warrenville (July 3rd), Niles and Morton Grove (July 4th), and Elk Grove Village (September 21st). If you are not a member but are thinking of having some Friday evenings with good fellowship and good music come on down to the Music Room at Medinah and introduce yourself. There are openings for various instruments. No previous knowledge of music is required. Bruce M. Allman, Scribe PATROL The Shrine’s First and Longest Running Uniformed Parade Unit When you think of Shriners in parades, you probably think of men in little cars. I know that’s what my family and friends think, and it’s what I thought before I became a Shriner. It turns out there are quite a few parading units taking on many different forms. I’m not going to list them...you can visit medinah.org for that information. Like all parade units, the Patrol exists to raise money to support our mission of helping kids. The Medinah Patrol Unit began in 1886 headed by our first Potentate Frank Roundy. The Patrol started as a marching unit. Hundreds of men in matching uniforms marching in step and in perfect formation to the thrill of the parade onlookers. People are no longer thrilled by the same things that thrilled them in the nineteenth century. People want something new and different, and that’s what the Patrol Unit delivers. Segways! In addition to the thrill of Segways, our unit also acts as the Color Guard at many Shrine events. Fast forward to the 21st century. Imagine flying down the street (yes, that’s what it feels like) on a Segway. The Patrol Unit used to parade and compete in marching drills, now we do the same on Segways. Crowds love to see the different Shrine units in parades and kids always seem to be in awe of the Segways. We have already appeared in one parade this year (Elmhurst), and we have plans to be in as many as 15 more before the year is over. Our next parade is on May 19th in Lombard for the Lilac Festival. The parade steps off at 1:30pm. Some of our other parades will include Niles, Glenview, West Chicago, and Streamwood. Where will we be next? Just look up and follow Medinah Patrol on Facebook to see our upcoming events. We also host other events like our twice a year Gin Tournament. If you want to join the Patrol Unit contact our Major: [email protected]. Brotherhood, Compassion, and Generosity. Bro. Patrick Perry 34 Medinah Shriner

PHOTOGRAPHY The Photography Club was hard at work at the beginning of this year snapping photos of the Illinois Shrine Clown Association Mid-Winter Session, the Mega-OV, Dixieland dinner, the Potentate’s Nobility Ball, Ladies Flower Show, Whiskey Tasting, and our Easter Egg Hunt. We also cannot forget the Spring Ceremonial and the welcoming of unit, club and committee heads. Plenty of camera time! We do our very best to provide photographic coverage whenever requested. Please give me a call, I'm in the calendar book! We are looking forward to getting outside in the sunlight and making the cameras sing, flying the drone, and enjoying our fellow Nobles’ company. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at Medinah at 7:00pm. Stop by and get involved. Ladies are welcome. Rich Schak Chief Photographer Spring 2019 35
