News of Units, Committees, & SC’s Chicago Dogs for Shriners Night On August 24th 2018, 218 Shriners, Family and Friends attended the “Shriners Hospital for Children” event held at Impact Field in Rosemont, IL. Impact Field is the home of the Chicago Dogs, one of the newest professional baseball teams. The Chicago Dogs organization partnered up with Chicago Shriners Hospital for Children for a fundraiser. Tickets were very affordable and $5.00 from every ticket sold by a Shriner was donated back to Chicago Shriners Hospital for Children. The Chicago Dog organization also allowed our Shriners to run a 50/50 raffle. A big thank you, to Sam Spector, Eric Keating, Erick Coners, Rupert Solis, George Molnar, and Frank Palella who walked around the entire stadium selling tickets. Word is that Sam Spector chatted with a gentleman as he was selling tickets and they talked about the Shriners organization…maybe a new member in the future. There were some employees from the Chicago Shrine Hospital in attendance as well. One of the bigger highlights of the evening, was when a patient from our Chicago Hospital was given the opportunity to throw the first pitch. She was accompanied by Potentate Bill Kissane and his Lady Debbie Jo. The evening was successful and it raised a total of $1,714.00. Half was donated to Medinah’s Transportation Fund {$857.00} and the other half to the hospital {$857.00}. Thanks to Daniel Winter, Janet Coffey, the hospital staff, and our Potentate Bill Kissane for their support and effort to make the evening successful. A special thanks out to Mark Niederpruem, Hospital Administrator, for all his help and attendance that evening. Finally, a big thanks to all the Shriners, family, and friends that attended. Ron Comiano Hospital Ambassador, Noble AVIATORS Over the summer, Tom Leverenz volunteered to be the Commander of the Medinah Aviators. Tom started with Medinah in 1973 and joined the Motor Corps. Tom was also a member of the Elgin Shrine Cycle Patrol in 1982. Last year, Tom joined the Medinah Aviators as Treasurer. For 17 years he worked as a Ramp Service Agent, a Load Planner for DC-8s and 747s, and was Senior Operations Supervisor at Flying Tiger Airfreight through 1987. He also spent 2 years as an Airman with VP-90 at Glenview Naval Air Station. For the coming year, the Aviators are planning a full schedule of parades and shows. We are also planning to attend Imperial Session and the Great Lakes Shrine Association next year. After many man hours, our aircraft is up and running. Just as all of the units of Medinah, we are always looking for new members. continued on page 28…. Medinah Shriner26

CAR CLUB Hello Nobles and Ladies, It’s been a very productive summer for Medinah’s Car Club. We drove in many parades this season: Elk Grove Village, Bensenville, Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Elburn, and Bartlett, to names a few. The 4th of July parades and parties are always a highlight of the season and this year was no different. We won 2nd place in the Itasca Parade for a “Professional Parade Unit”. We also donated $250 to the Ladies of Medinah Temple Fashion Show. In Addition, we are active with Shriner’s Hospital for Children & other local charities. The 11th Annual Medinah Car Show was held on Sunday, September 30, 2018. We had 170 participants and many more spectators. The numbers were down from last year due to threatening skies. There were scattered sprinkles, but overall it was a great success. We saw many cool cars and even cooler participants. We want to thank everyone that participated, as well as all our donors and sponsors that made our event fun and successful. If you are thinking of joining a club, consider ours. All you need is an interest in antique vehicles and a willingness to help. We meet at Mac’s Golden Pheasant on our NEW set-date of, the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Dinner and fellowship begin at 6:30pm and the meeting is at 7:30pm. We are dark in December. Yours Nobly, Joshua Stoner Medinah Car Club Editor & Chief [email protected] CLOWNS Greetings from the Medinah Clown Unit! News of Units, Committees, & SC’s FOX VALLEY SHRINE CLUB President James Mack Elburn Parade – On Friday, August 17th, Fox Valley participated in the Elburn Parade. It was a beautiful evening parade, with rain drops here and there, keeping everyone’s attention on staying dry. The Club presented its calliope and HoverBikes with members Rick Mickelsen, Jake DeKoyer, Walter Bamert, Ron Connelly, Jim Wescott and Dusty Dobbs participating, along with Robert Alley filling the air with his undaunting calliope music. What a sight for the nobles doing their things in the parade! Elburn Parade is short once underway, but the crowds lining the street provided the reason why Fox Valley parades in Elburn…because they appreciated our effort and equipment. After the parade, Phil and Pam Vovola held a delightful afterglow for nobles and their ladies. We all enjoyed fresh grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, all the related trimmings and more, along with other non-food re- freshments. It was a royal feast enjoyed by all! The afterglow was a great time for fellowship and remembering the fun of years gone by. All enjoyed themselves. Thank you, Phil and Pam, for a beautiful evening, enjoyed by all! News of Units, Committees, & SC’s LEGION OF HONOR To begin, the Medinah Picnic for our members was a fun event, plus we held a raffle that brought in a good amount of income for us. The Sportsman’s Raffle brought us MORE money with an additional raffle! We want to welcome our newest member Rupert Solis, an army veteran. We will start to gather used, serviceable clothing for the Veteran’s Closet. Many of our vets have fallen on hard times and this should be valuable to them. Our Christmas Party will NOT be during December as the competition for various parties will be keen. Instead we will have our party in January. Our dinner charge will be reduced by $5.00 from each member to help defray the cost of same taking place on November 3, 2018. We need the support of every member which benefits each and every member of the Legion of Honor. I will now close trusting my report to you is informative. With this I remain your scribe - Emil Denemark. MINI CHOPPERS 2018 has been a very busy and fun parade season for the Mighty Medinah Mini Choppers. We have been parading all over the Chi- cagoland area, beginning on a cold March morning and ending in chilly November. Whenever the Mini Choppers travel, we try to spread happiness and goodwill with everyone we meet. We see our mission as not only raising money for the Shriners Hospital in Chicago, but also as ambassadors for the Medinah Shrine. We recently encountered a man at a parade who was super excited to see us ride our chop- pers. As we did our circles on the street, we noticed that he had a little girl with him who was born with a birth defect in her arm. His excitement to see us was intended to let us know that his young daughter was a Shriner Kid. As all our brother Nobles know, there is no greater sense of pride to see how the Shriners have touched so many lives. Another time, we were approached by a very nice grandmother who told us that her one- year old grandson was born with a bowlegged condition. We gave her our information and led her through the process of getting an appointment at the hospital. The Mini Choppers have officially “adopted” her and the family. We will stay in touch as the young boy seeks treatment. 34 Medinah Shriner

ORIENTAL BANDThe band sweated out three great performances during the 4th of JulyCelebration. Together with the Brass Band we entertained the crowds in Niles,Skokie, and Morton Grove. Two weeks later a delightful repast was enjoyed byseveral members at the home of your humble Scribe. My thanks to all who madethe journey all the way to our home.It seems ironic that we tend to wait until we retire in order to get sick. Ourthoughts go to bandsman Tristan Tabotabo who had some serious surgeryshortly after retiring from the U.S. Postal Service. We believe that he will recoverin good order and rejoin us soon. Our Christmas Party is scheduled forDecember 8th at Medinah at 6:00pm.We practice on the second and fourth Friday evenings of every month.
