Scanning Our school community should always be ready for randomized scanning of weapons. The NYC Department of Education determines these scanning dates. The High School of Fashion Industries has zero tolerance for any sort of weapons in schools. Below is a list of the two types of weapons according to the NYC Department of Education. Please make sure you carefully read this list over. Students with Category 1 weapons will be recommended to receive a Superintendent’s Suspension by the school. Students with Category 2 weapons will be recommended to receive a Principal’s Suspension. Again, the NYC Department of Education and the High School of Fashion Industries has zero tolerance for any sort of weapons in schools. Category 1 Weapons ❏ Firearms, including pistols, starter guns, handguns, silencers, electronic darts, shotguns, rifles, machine guns, or any weapon which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by action of an explosive ❏ Stun guns/weapons ❏ Air guns, spring guns, or other instruments or weapons in which the propelling force is a spring or air, and any weapon in which any loaded or blank cartridge may be used (such as a BB gun or paintball gun) □ Switchblade knife, gravity knife, pilum ballistic knife, and cane sword (a cane that conceals a knife or sword) ❏ Daggers, stilettos, dirks, razorblades, box cutters, case cutters, utility knife, and all other knives ❏ Billy clubs, blackjack, bludgeon, chukka stick, and metal knuckles ❏ Slingshot (small, heavy weights attached to or propelled by a thong) and slung shot ❏ Martial arts objects including kung fu stars, nunchucks, and shirkens 94 ❏ Explosives, including bombs, firecrackers, and bombshells
Category 2 Weapons Note: Before requesting a suspension for possession of an article listed in Category II for which a purpose other than infliction of physical harm exists, e.g., a nail file, the principal must consider whether there are mitigating factors present. In addition, the principal must consider whether an imitation gun is realistic looking by considering factors such as its color, size, shape, appearance, and weight. ❏ Acid or dangerous chemicals (such as pepper spray, mace) ❏ Imitation gun or other imitation weapon ❏ Loaded or blank cartridges and other ammunition ❏ Any deadly, dangerous, or sharp pointed instruments which can be used or is intended for use as a weapon (such as scissors, nail file that is four inches or longer and made of metal, broken glass, chains, wire). Student Identification Cards All students are required to carry a valid ID card at all times. You may be asked to produce your ID to verify your identity by any staff member and failure to do so is a violation of the NYC DOE’s student code of conduct. Students new to HSFI will have an ID photo taken and your card printed within the first few weeks of school. If you misplace or lose your ID card, it is your responsibility to obtain a new ID card through the Peace Center in room 145. ID cards are required for entry for the following locations around the building: ❏ Cafeteria ❏ Student Lounge ❏ Library ❏ College Office ❏ FLY School Store ❏ Restrooms & Hallways ❏ Entering & Re-entering the school building ❏ Going out to lunch
Here’s what YOU can do to be SAFE: On The Way To School ❏ TRAVEL WITH A FRIEND. If you don’t know anyone, see your guidance counselor who will try to pair you with someone who lives near you. ❏ STAY ON A CROWDED SECTION OF THE SUBWAY PLATFORM. Never wait in a deserted, poorly lit section. ❏ STAND BACK FROM THE EDGE OF THE PLATFORM. ❏ TRY TO TRAVEL IN THE CENTER OF A CROWDED TRAIN CAR. If possible, ride in the same car with the conductor. ❏ LEAVE THE STATION WITH THE CROWD BY THE NEAREST EXIT. Don’t linger behind so you have to go up the stairs by yourself. ❏ DON’T LOITER OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL - - ENTER IMMEDIATELY. While In The School ❏ FOLLOW YOUR PROGRAM, GO TO ALL YOUR CLASSES. Students who do this rarely have any problems. ❏ ALWAYS BE SURE YOU ARE IN A SUPERVISED AREA – a classroom, and office, the cafeteria, the library, the study hall. ❏ NEVER HAND OUT ON THE STAIRWAYS OR A DESERTED HALLWAY. Always be sure a member of the school staff is around. ❏ FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF SCHOOL PERSONNEL – Supervisors, Teachers, Counselors, Aides, Maintenance and Cafeteria Personnel. ❏ ALWAYS CARRY YOUR ID CARD AND PROGRAM CARD. ❏ REPORT ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEM: to the Peace Office (room 145), your Wellness Support Team or any staff member or school security officer. ❏ IF YOU SEE ANY TROUBLE, GO THE OTHER WAY. After School Is Dismissed ❏ LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. The officers of the 10th Precinct and the Transit Police know our dismissal times and station uniformed and non-uniformed police in the vicinity of the school and train stations. They will watch out for you if you leave on time. ❏ LEAVE WITH A FRIEND, especially if you stay after school for any activity. ❏ NEVER “HANG OUT” IN A DESERTED AREA OF THE SCHOOL. Always stay where there is a staff member present. 96
How can we safely prepare for emergencies? The health and safety of all our students, faculty, administration, staff, and visitors is our primary priority at HSFI. While the likelihood of a significant emergency is remote, HSFI recognizes the critical importance of being prepared and has designed a comprehensive program that ensures the security of the school community in the event of a crisis. Drills are a required component of school operations because they provide the opportunity for students and staff to practice the actual actions they would take in an emergency. In an emergency listen for instructions and act as our teacher/staff member instructs us to do so. Below are 3 different types of emergency situations and how you are to respond should these situations ever take place during the school day. While we hope for the best, we must always prepare for everything. Take some time to review the instructions below. It is always a good idea to review them with your parents. If you have any questions, you can speak to any staff member or counselor. Always remember in an emergency when you hear it, do it. EVACUATE: (Fire Alarm or Directions) ✔ Leave your items behind. ✔ Always wear your ID Card. ✔ Form a line, remain quiet and listen to directions from your teacher. ✔ Stay with your class; keep your teacher in sight.
LOCKDOWN: (Soft/Hard-when a threat is inside the building) ✔ Remain silent and quickly move out of sight and away from the door. ✔ Always wear your ID Card. ✔ Follow all instructions given by your teacher, or staff. ✔ If you are not in class, or in the hallway, and you hear the announcement over the loudspeaker, go into any room nearby. SHELTER-IN: (The Threat is outside of the building) ✔ Remain inside the building and follow directions of staff. ✔ Always wear your ID Card. Here are the four types of drills that will take place at HSFI: Lockdown is the term used to describe security measures taken to protect against intruders. ● After the announcement, \"We are in a soft/hard lockdown. Take proper action.\" Students will move out of sight and maintain complete silence. ● Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper). ● If a student is in the bathroom, they should remain in the bathroom and hide in a stall with their feet up. If a student is in the hall, they must go to the closest classroom or office. ● Students and staff members disregard fire alarms. ● No one enters or exits the school except public safety personnel. ● Stay Put, Stay tuned to announcements made via 98 the PA system.
Principal Blank or his designee will make the following announcements over the PA system: ● In an actual emergency, students will hear: \"At the sound of the alarm, please follow the procedures for an outdoor evacuation.\" ● If the evacuation is a drill, you will hear, \"In a moment, we will conduct an evacuation drill. At the sound of the alarm, please follow the procedures for an outdoor evacuation. ● After alerting their teachers, students with limited mobility concerns should report to the designated holding room on the floor they are already on. These rooms are 148, 229, 329, 429, 529, 629, 729, 829, 1029. ● Teachers will advise students to line up in the hallway and take high-value belongings located within the classroom only. ● Teachers will lead students, as directed on evacuation posters (use appropriate route and side of the stairwell – front vs. rear) out of the building. STUDENTS must NEVER USE ELEVATORS during an evacuation -drill or otherwise. Additionally, Locker access is NOT PERMITTED during an evacuation emergency or otherwise. ● Teachers and students will return to the classes they left, attendance will be retaken, and any missing students must be reported to Safety AP at x 1453.
Shelter In Place temporarily separates people from a hazardous outdoor situation or incident. ● A Shelter-In occurs when there is danger outside the building, such as severe weather conditions, police activity, etc. ● The following announcement will be made: \"Attention, this is a shelter-in. Secure the exit doors.\" School Security Agents and Administrative teams will secure exit doors. ● In some cases, teachers or other staff members may ensure that windows and doors are closed, locked, and sealed with materials that will block airflow. ● Students remain inside the building and follow the directions of the teacher. A hold drill teaches staff and students to remain where they are and continue business as usual. Teachers will not issue hall passes until the HOLD alert is lifted. Please Note: for students who have limited mobility OR have a medical related condition which prohibits them from evacuating, they must submit the appropriate documentation to room 329 and the peace office 100 so they may receive support.
What happens if I break the school rules? Humans are hardwired to connect with each other. Human connections are as important as food and water. COVID and the remote world has contributed to taking away these connections. The reason people do the right thing is to maintain their relationships and connections with those in their community. When someone breaks the rules of the community they live in, including the most serious, those actions can be traced to the offender’s lack of belonging and connection to the people around them. Misbehavior is an offense against people and relationships, not just rule breaking. HSFI will focus on building students’ belongingness and connection to our community. The traditional school discipline system focuses on these three questions: ❏ What rule was broken? ❏ Who is responsible? ❏ What is the punishment? HSFI is moving towards a discipline system that prioritizes Restorative Practices. Under this way of thinking, our discipline system will focus on these three questions: ❏ What harm occurred? ❏ Who has been impacted and what are their needs? ❏ What does repair look like and what needs to be done to meet the needs of all those who have been harmed?
Students who cause harm to others and the community will be asked five restorative questions: 1. What happened? 2. What were you thinking of at the time? 3. What have you thought about since? 4. Who has been affected by what you have done, and how were they affected? 5. What do you think you need to do to make things right? Towards the goal of creating a discipline system aligned with restorative practices, social worker Ms. Valette, will help coordinate the consequences for students who break school rules. Ms. Valette will work with a student’s grade level Wellness Team and the Assistant Principal of Safety and Security to ultimately determine what the discipline looks like. The consequences might include detention and/or suspension. All disciplinary measures will follow the New York City Department of Education Discipline Code. The goal of any consequences for a student breaking school rules will NOT be for the purposes of stigmatizing a student as ‘bad’ nor humiliating or excluding them. The goal of any consequences will be to: ❏ Preserve safety and make sure an act is not done again ❏ Allow the offender to learn from their mistakes and change their behavior ❏ Set an example for others ❏ Prevent larger consequences Where can I find or submit lost items? Lost items can be brought to the Peace Office in room 145. Items can also be brought to the principal’s office in room 819. 102

Attendance Why is Attendance Important For My Success? Great things are happening at the High School of Fashion Industries every day during and after school. To get the most out of the educational and extracurricular activities, it is a shared expectation that all students come to school on time every day. Getting to school on time starts with making a plan to go to bed early and wake up on time. It continues with a plan on making the commute from home to school with time to spare for transit delays and the time it takes to get into the building and up to your first period of the day. Students who make attendance a priority have a demonstrated track record of success. Every minute matters and it's a partnership between students, families, and staff to make this philosophy a reality. Making attendance a priority means: ❏ Arriving on time to school every day ❏ Attending all of your classes ❏ Scheduling appointments outside of school hours so you miss minimal class instruction ❏ Not scheduling trips and vacations outside of the NYCDOE calendar HSFI offers many incentives for students to continue a consistent attendance streak including Fashion Dollars, going out to lunch passes, school store certificates, and many other rewards. Participation in certain activities are privilege based and poor school and period attendance may jeopardize your eligibility. 110
How does my family and I report an absence? It is the responsibility of students to report their absences to the school and to their teachers. Communicating absences in a professional manner is an important life skill students will need in their post-graduation life. To report an absence to the school, students and their families should contact HSFI’s main office by calling (212) 255-1235 ext. 1254. When a student is absent, you should send a professional communication to their teachers through email and.or Jupiter telling them about the absence. Here is an example of this communication: Dear Teachers, I am writing this email to inform you of my absence on ___(date). I anticipate returning to school on ____ (date) and will make up missing assignments posted online. What are the procedures for leaving school early? Thank you, Early Dismissal Students are required to follow their academic program from start to finish on a daily basis. In the case that a student may have an important appointment that unavoidably conflicts with their school schedule, a family emergency, or is not feeling well, there are sign out procedures that must be followed to ensure their safety: Parent Sign Out Parents can go directly to the Main office, room 125, to pick up their child. If a parent is unable to pick up their child, then a designated relative or friend over the age of 18 years listed on the student’s emergency contact card may also do so. All adults requesting to pick up a child must have a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license, non-driver’s identification, or passport and are required to sign specific school documents verifying that the student was dismissed early at a specific date and time in their care.
Students will be called down from class once sign out procedures are complete. Students will receive two passes at that point: 1. A pass to give to their teachers of the classes they have missed due to their early dismissal 2. A pass to give to the School Safety desk Students Under the Age of 18 If a student has an appointment, the school must obtain written consent from the parent/guardian allowing the student to be released from school to travel home or to a doctor. The following statement must also be included in the written consent: “I release the school from any and all liability once my child leaves the building.” Students should bring this written consent to their guidance counselor before the start of the school day. Guidance counselors will reach out to the parent or guardian for verification and notify the Main Office of when the student will need to be released from school. Students are required to sign out through the Main Office, room 125. If a student becomes ill at school, the school must obtain written consent from the parent/guardian allowing the student to be released from school to travel home or to a doctor. The following statement must also be included in the written consent: “I release the school from any and all liability once my child leaves the building.” In addition, a school health professional must agree that the student is not too ill to either walk or travel alone using public transportation. If the student is deemed not well enough to travel alone by the school health professional, she/he may only be picked up by a parent/guardian or other adult designated on the student’s emergency contact card. Students 18 Years Old & Over If a student has an appointment and is 18 and over, he/she needs a confirmation of the appointment (letter from parent or the doctor) and can go directly to the Main Office to sign out. If he/she does NOT have a note, the counselor must get a confirmation verbally from the parent. 112
Food Service What are the food services at HSFI? Breakfast at HSFI Breakfast is free to all HSFI students. If you arrive early to school, you can obtain a nutritious breakfast in the cafeteria located on the 4th floor. Lunch at HSFI Hot and cold lunches are served daily in the cafeteria located on the 4th floor. This is the only place food and/or beverages should be consumed. All students are expected to dispose of trash in the receptacles provided. You must report to the cafeteria during your assigned lunch period. Can I have food deliveries? Students are not allowed to have food delivered to the school; To ensure that all students and staff are safe, the following policy is in place regarding food deliveries to students: ❏ Students will not be allowed to have food delivered to school for any reason. Ordering food delivery during school hours is prohibited. ❏ Students have access to nutritious food via the cafeteria, which is available during breakfast and assigned lunch. ❏ Students are welcome to bring their packed meals as an alternative. ❏ Allowing food deliveries by unknown individuals creates a security concern for all. More importantly, students lose instructional time, and disruptions to school operations arise due to food deliveries ordered by students.
Can I go out for lunch? ❏ Students are permitted to leave the building for lunch during their designated lunch period and must swipe in/out of the building upon leaving and returning ❏ Lunch passes are distributed each marking period based on a GPA of 85 with all classes also 85 and above. All lunch passes will be distributed in the main office ❏ Honor Roll students must pick up their lunch pass during the first 2 weeks of nomination. ❏ With 1000 Fashion Dollars, non honor roll students can purchase lunch passes in the main office but will be approved by the Peace Center ❏ If a student has any concerns about going out to lunch, they may reach Assistant Principal, Ms. Frank in room 615 or Assistant Principal, Ms. Arcamay in room 819. ❏ Non honor roll Passes are issued weekly unless a student violates the terms of the agreement. ❏ A parental consent form is required, and eligible students must submit this form each semester. Students may not leave the building without an ID, and students are required to swipe in/out of the building upon leaving and returning. ❏ Additionally, students’ attendance, academic standing, and disciplinary record are considered when distributing this “Going out to Lunch” pass ❏ Students leaving the building should return 5 minutes before the end of the period. Students must be on time to the class on their schedule after this lunch period - failure to be on time will result in losing this privilege. ❏ Students are not permitted to bring food purchased outside of the building during lunch or after school back into the building. Students may not order food from the building. Food deliveries are not permitted. ❏ Students who eat in hallways or classrooms may be subject to disciplinary action. The only allowable place to eat food is in the cafeteria, located on the 4th floor. 114
❏ Please remember that leaving the building for lunch is a privilege. Student privileges may revoke your access to lunch this privilege if any of the policies mentioned above are not followed. ❏ Any violation of these requirements gives HSFI the right to take away this pass at any time and may result in the student being INELIGIBLE for future “Going out to Lunch” passes. ❏ This pass IS NOT SHARABLE and is only valid for the student it was issued for the individual who earned it. What is a lunch application? How do I submit it and why is it important? Title 1 Lunch Applications must be submitted each year starting in late summer and continue through the fall until November. Submitting the form is important for school funding. In addition, applications can help with possibly qualifying for scholarships and/or fee waivers. The form can be done electronically from www.myschoolapps.com . Use HSFI zip code of 10011 and select New York City Public Schools. Fill out the correct information and submit the form. Paper copies of the form are in the main office and in different languages. Where else can I go besides the cafeteria during my lunch period? There are other spaces around the building that you may visit during your lunch period. Please visit https://www.hsfi.nyc/spaces for up to date information.
