HSFI works with all students during the spring semester to sign them up for the right classes for the following school year. If there is something on your schedule that might need to be changed, first speak with your counselor located in your grade level Wellness Team room. They will be able to answer questions about why you are enrolled in a particular class and help you understand your path to graduation. If there is still something about your schedule that needs to be changed, your counselor will submit your request to the Programming Office. The Programming Office will review the submission and will make a change if appropriate. You’ll receive a new program from the Programming Office. Program changes are meant for situations where a student is in the incorrect class possibly because they took it already during Summer School or at a school other than HSFI. Program changes are not meant for situations like changing the period of a class, changing classes because of a particular teacher, or changes because of a particular student. In these situations an administrator will review the specifics before a program change will be considered. How do I request a program change? 62
How do I receive official academic school documentation including report cards, transcripts and program cards? Paper copies of transcripts and program cards are provided at the beginning of each semester. Students receive a blue program card on the first day of school and a white program card after program changes are complete. Students are expected to have a paper copy of their program card with them every day and to bring it with them when leaving the classroom with a pass. Paper copies of report cards are handed out after grades are submitted during 3rd period classes. Digital copies of this information are available on the NYC School Account (https://www.schoolsaccount.nyc/) or scan the following QR code: where your family member can login to track your progress. If you need a paper reprint of your Program Card, Report Card, or Transcript please visit the Main Office in room 125.
How do I sign up to retake a Regents exam? Students enrolled in courses that culminate in Regents examinations will be automatically scheduled to take exams by the Testing Office. Regents examinations are part of the NY State graduation requirements and it is the expectation that all students sit for these exams. If students wish to retake an exam, they can sign up with the testing office via Google Form sent out before each exam administration period (January, June, August). Students who complete this form on time will have the exam appear on their exam invitation and will report directly to their testing rooms the day of the exam. Students may also register as a walk-in on the day of the exam. Students will report to the testing office (Room 202) where their information will be recorded and they will be assigned a testing room. What is HSFI’s Grading Policy? The goal of HSFI’s grading policy is to give every student the possibility for success and multiple opportunities to achieve it. Success won’t be dependent only on a first attempt. Instead students will be able to practice, fail, learn from feedback, and move forward with the possibility of meaningful success still ahead of them. Here is the visual representation of this cycle of improvement: 64
Timeline of Student Grades ● HSFI issues report cards six times a year. ● All six report cards will indicate a term grade, and the third and sixth report cards, issued at the end of each semester, will indicate both a term grade and final grade for each course. ● At the conclusion of each semester, course teachers submit final grades which are entered onto students’ transcripts and serve as the permanent grade. Appealing a Final Grade To appeal a teacher’s final grade, students must present all documentation to the teacher to argue their case. If the teacher denies the appeal to change the final grade, the student may appeal to the Principal who will make a determination for the final grade based on evidence provided by both the teacher and the student. The NYC Department of Education - UFT contract states “if the principal changes a student’s grade in any subject for a grading period, the principal shall notify the teacher of the reason for the change in writing.” Timeline for Changing a Grade / Making Up Class Work It is the policy of the Department of Education and Commissioner’s Regulations, that students who have been absent from class for verified, legitimate reasons (such as illness, court appearances, family emergencies, or attendance at funerals) are to be given a reasonable opportunity to make up missed work, including examinations and quizzes. Handwritten notes from parents verifying legitimate absences will be accepted by teachers. Students are responsible for making up the work. A teacher can change a student’s grade up to 20 days after a marking period has ended with a valid reason. These changes can be completed during these 20 days on the NYC Department of Education STARS system. After these 20 days, teachers may not change any grade except in very rare circumstances, such as those involving miscalculation or data entry errors. In such cases, teachers must submit a ‘Change of Grade’ form with appropriate documentation to support the grade. After reviewing the documentation, the Principal may or may not approve the change.
Grade Point Average (GPA) / Advanced Placement Classes / Class Rank Students earn one credit for each passing grade for most core academic classes. Final grades for Advanced Placement courses will be weighted an additional 10 percent when calculating a student’s overall GPA. Students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses must take the Advanced Placement Examinations. All classes except ‘science lab’ class and ‘resource room (SETSS) class’ are part of calculating a student’s Grade Point Average. Class rank will be determined by students’ Grade Point Average. Only students entering the school in ninth or tenth grade are eligible for earning Valedictorian or Salutatorian status. Opportunities to Discuss Student Progress Parent-teacher conferences will take place once a term (Fall and Spring). Teachers, counselors and supervisors can be reached via email to discuss student progress. Please give school staff 24 hours to respond. Academic Dishonesty All allegations of academic dishonesty (i.e. cheating on an exam, plagiarizing work from another student) will be investigated according to NYC Department of Education protocols; if substantiated, consequences will follow the NYC Department of Education Discipline Code. Promotion Decisions Promotion decisions are determined by student credit accumulation and attendance. The main opportunity to make up failed courses is summer school and if the needed course is offered during a given term. 66
What is Career & Technical Education (CTE)? Students learn both hands-on and digital skills to prepare them with 21st century skills to ensure success when they enter post-secondary education and their careers. Internships and industry experiences are an integral part of the learning process, and all students participate in work based learning workshops and internships. Industry partnerships include Kleinfeld, Adidas, IMG, Alexander Wang, Aperture, and Queens Center Mall, just to name a few.
