BENTONITE CHIPS Product Definition: Graded Bentonite for Plugging and Sealing Description: BENTONITE CHIPS are a natural sodium bentonite chip screened and graded to fine and medium size and are used primarily to seal and plug boreholes. BENTONITE CHIPS are often used for decommissioning wells, sealing bores and seismic shot holes, providing a seal around casing and used to successfully treat lost circulation. BENTONITE CHIPS are also used to place an impermeable barrier between gravel pack, backfill or cement grout and used to prevent aquifer communication. General Application – Recommended Treatment If subjected to vigorous handling and prolonged transportation, inspect the pails for fines which should be removed before placement to prevent bridging and binding. Pour BENTONITE CHIPS slowly and evenly into the hole or annulus (to depth, above static water level or to ground level). In a dry hole situation, water should be added in 1.0 – 2.0 metre intervals to ensure wetting and hydration. To cure loss circulation, pull pipe from the hole or pull rods well back above the thief zone. Pour in BENTONITE CHIPS to fill 1 metre above the problem zone. Standby and allow sufficient time to hydrate. Advantages: Easy to use Forms a flexible impermeable seal Chemically stable and non-fermenting Helps prevent lost circulation Separates aquifers and forms a barrier between gravel pack and grout Limitation: Performance decreases when salinity exceeds 7,500 mg/l and hardness (calcium) exceeds 250 mg/l.
