Studio 56 Dance Center PARENT HANDBOOK 2020-21 EVERY STUDENT MATTERS, EVERY MOMENT COUNTS, EVERY CHILD MATTERS.

PHILOSOPHY WELCOME TO STUDIO 56 DANCE CENTER! We take our roles as mentors and teachers in your child’s life very seriously. It is our objective to inspire a passion for the art of dance in every child who passes through our doors. In the process, we strive to set the right example and help your child (and you) create memories that will last a lifetime. OUR PHILOSOPHY We believe that dance training encourages young people to develop a positive self-image as they increase awareness of their physical capabilities. Along with improving coordination skills and developing muscular awareness, dance gives children the freedom to express themselves through movement.  OUR MISSION Our mission is to create talented dancers while simultaneously encouraging the development of important values and life skills, such as teamwork, dedication, responsibility, leadership, respect, and self- esteem.  STUDIO MOTTO “Where Everyone Shines.\" OUR VISION INSPIRING PASSION, DEVELOPING TALENT We believe dance is for everyone, no matter the skill level or body type. As such, we strive to offer a positive, challenging, and structured environment where great values are taught, and blossoming talent is developed.

Students are expected to be in dress code for every class. Hair and shoes are part of the dress code. Dancers who are not in dress code will receive a reminder note to take home. Dancers are not in trouble if they receive a note! The reminder note is the easiest way for teachers to communicate with parents quickly and easily on dress code matters.   We understand that occasionally a dancer may be out of dress code due to unforeseen circumstances, and we encourage them to attend class anyway. Students should carry their dancewear, shoes, and other belongings in a dance bag. CLASSROOM RULES 1. Listen and follow directions the first time. 2. Always do my best. 3. Be on time and prepared. 4. Respect, respect, respect! Myself, my teachers, my class, and my studio. 5. Remember the \"Thumper Rule\" - if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHAT WILL MY CHILD BE LEARNING? This is something every parent wants to know! Each one of our classes follows a monthly syllabus with skills and requirements that teachers use in their lessons each week. We will use the same class structure throughout the year and will modify, add, or change activities as the students develop through the year. Students will engage in improvisation games and activities during class. Improvisation allows dancers to create their own movement and patterns of movement.   Students will develop at different rates and level; abilities will vary within a class. Please do not compare your child to others in the class. Towards the end of the year, all students will receive a report card with teacher feedback and a recommendation for what classes will be best for your dancer in the next season. HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF CLASSES Dance lessons can be an awesome way to encourage your child’s personal growth! At Studio 56 Dance Center, we’re not just teaching dance steps in our classrooms—we’re developing curious, compassionate young leaders and equipping them for success. We know that it can be a challenge sometimes to know what to do to offer support and encouragement for your dancer—especially if you are still new to the world of dance! Here are four of our best tips for making the most out of your child’s experience with us: Talk about dance at home Ask your child to teach you what they are learning Find out what your child likes best about class, or what they find challenging Voice your support Please let us know if your child is having a rough day. In turn, we will let you know if your child was having a rough day in class. We want to keep open communication with parents and feel we work best together as a team! Whether it be dancing for fun on a weekly class, wanting some extra performance opportunities during the year, or pursuing dance as a career, we care very much about each one of our dancers at every age and want to help them progress on a path that's right for them! If you have a question about your child's class, your child's progress in class, or a question for their teacher, please ask the office. Teachers are usually not available to talk extensively between classes, so we are here to help and make your experience fun, easy, and positive.

GET CONNECTED We work hard to make the dance experience organized and fun. Keeping you informed is one of our primary goals. Please read all newsletters and other school information. www.studio56dance.com | [email protected] | 801.261.31828

PERFORMANCES Performance Consent: You must turn in a consent to participate in the June Recital. Participation consents are due by December 15th. The consents are on the registration waiver and can be turned in to your teacher or submitted online. Payment Schedules:  Choose 7 monthly installments (Dec-Jun) or 1 installment on Dec. 1st. The Recital package includes everything you need for a successful performance: All accounts must be up-to-date and paid in full to participate in performances. Students will NOT be able to perform if the account is not current. No refunds on performance payments will be made if a parent or guardian withdraws a child from the school prior to the recital. Purchased costumes may be picked up at the school during the costume distribution period and up to 15 days after the performance. Costumes not picked up after 15 days will be donated to charity.

PERFORMANCES A big part of dance training includes learning through performance. These experiences help build self-esteem and confidence, retention skills, and more! TUMBLING EXHIBITION: Our Tumbling Exhibition in June offers students an opportunity to shine in front of family and friends. They will anticipate this evening with nervous excitement as they prepare to show off the results of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress. The Exhibition will give each class 20 minutes of demonstration time. Each group will demonstrate skills together as a class, and each student will get to showcase a few of their favorite “harder” tricks with their instructor’s supervision. At the conclusion of their class demonstration, tumblers will receive an award and can take pictures with their teachers and supporters. Free admission Costumes: The Tumbling Exhibition costume is the recital shirt and shorts. JUNE RECITAL: Our June Recital offers our students a professionally-directed performance that allows them to present the results of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress to their family and friends. Students perform in each of the styles of dance they train in. Costumes:  We spend many hours determining the correct costumes for each class. They are always age appropriate and of the highest quality possible. Students will need one costume for each of their classes. Costumes include all accessories (tights, hats, gloves, etc.), but do not include shoes. In an effort to ensure that costumes are delivered in time for recital pictures and an organized distribution to our students, costume orders are placed months in advance. Costume manufacturers do not accept cancellations or offer refunds; therefore, the school does not refund performance payments. Studio 56 Dance Center is not responsible if costumes are not received in time for the show due to late payments. Recital Pictures: One digital class image is included in the performance package. Class photos will be taken backstage during dress rehearsal. Arrival times will be in the final information distributed in May. After the group photo, students will have individual portraits taken. Instructions for ordering individual portraits will be sent home in advance and must be pre-ordered. There is no obligation to purchase additional photos. Tickets for Recital: Tickets will be available online for pre-purchase beginning in May.
