TESTED TECNO SPARK 5 A bit of a bright Spark High-end might be where it’s at when it comes to smartphones, but the real fights take place here, in the budget bracket R3 500 / tecno-mobile.com We’ve watched Tecno’s phones from afar and finally got our hands on one. It looks, at a distance, like something the newly-sold Honor might field. Go closer and that crisp, shiny body is all plastic. The texture is just a part of the device’s design as well. If you want something that feels how this looks, you’ll need to spend a couple grand more. Which is fair enough. The Spark 5 is a budget handset, even if it’s trying not to look like one. TESTED SKYWORTH 55UB7500 Reach for the Skyworth An Android-based 4K television that gets the job done without sending you out of your budget comfort zone from R8 000 / skyworth.co.za Skyworth is an often-overlooked TV brand in South Africa. Its budget arm, Sinotec, does good business at the lower price points but items like the UB7500 are a more premium experience. Not as premium as, say, Samsung or LG but also lacking the South Korean brands’ pricing. It’s a UHD LED screen, capable of 330 nits of brightness and with an 8ms response time. It’ll handle Netflix or games consoles like a champ. Colour reproduction is clear, with more extravagant shades popping off the screen just right. But that’s as far as it goes for fancy features. The UB7500 uses Android 9.0 as its OS. Unlike early Android OS efforts, it feels made for television sets. You could play games on this TV, and there are options if that’s your thing (like an optional Bluetooth controller) but mostly you’ll be downloading streaming apps. The OS is a little slow to start but it’s really quite responsive once the ball gets rolling. There is a full-sized remote, with buttons for Netflix, YouTube and the built-in media player. There’s also Google Assistant voice control – which works as well as it does on other Android devices. Whether you want to control your TV that way is up to you, but Skyworth is expanding its usefulness in its 2021 sets. For now, this is a nice-to-have. We prefer the buttons, though. That’s the key ingredient for crisp colours – who knew? LG’s NanoCell tech brings 4K content to life. Colours are brilliant and saturated to just the right degree, while there’s no fogginess and the picture looks as sharp as the knife we unsealed the TV’s box with. It’s pretty similar to an OLED. At under R15k for the 55in panel, you’d be excused for thinking that LG’s Super UHD pricing is a fluke. It really isn’t. Combine it with LGs smart-TV interface and smart controller, and you’re set. Sound’s also lekker, but we paired it with the Sonos soundbar and… these two were meant to be together. It may be one of the best- looking TVs when watching brightly lit stuff, but once you have black borders (we watched Avengers: Endgame on it) or darker scenes, you notice visible blooming around lit-up objects – which isn’t very OLED. It gets annoying to the point that it draws attention to itself but, considering the price, we’ll let that slide. NanoCell is all about the colour rather than the black contrasts anyway. Apple’s stock iPhone for 2021 has a lot to love Rtba / istore.co.za 1 Choosing between an iPhone 12 and an iPhone 12 Pro will prove to be more difficult than ever this year. That’s because they’re closer together than ever before. They sport the same screens and the same processors, they’re the same size and both feature Apple’s revamped design language. They both have 5G and they also have extremely similar camera tech. It’s easier if you’re picking between the iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Being distinct from each other, and standing out from the middle siblings, makes selection a simple matter. But here? You’re being forced to a nigh-impossible choice. But impossible choices is what we do and nobody, not even Apple, is going to cause us to make a misstep there. The iPhone 12 is less mentally taxing if you’re looking at upgrading from an iPhone 11 or earlier. You don’t even have to keep reading, you can just go and place an order for one of these right now. TESTED APPLE iPHONE 12, 12 PRO Apple iPhone 12 Pro Apple’s more affordable Pro has the camera tech it needs to get your attention, but it faces competition from within Rtba / istore.co.za 1 Apple’s got a love for all things Pro, starting with the iPads before turning its attention to the ever- popular iPhone. This year, the iPhone 12 has a lot in common with the iPad Pro range thanks to its almost-throwback design that pairs the all-screen front end with a more angular aluminium frame. And that goes for the iPhone 12 Pro too, which actually deserves the title. Even if it doesn’t seem that way immediately. There’s not much in this handset compared to the iPhone 12. The same 6.1in Super Retina XDR OLED displays are at work in both, as are identical A14 Bionic chips. Heck, even the battery size is the same between the handsets. So, what justifies the price increase and the Pro moniker? Well, that’d be the camera tech, which is stepped up in the iPhone 12 Pro. Which might be reason enough to recommend this handset but there’s something looming on the horizon – the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is a chunk more expensive but also arrives bearing Apple’s most advanced camera features to date.
