I pray before, I try to ask for a safe, clean run, and I tell myself, sit up and look at your spots. It helps me to keep in mind what my job is. I just try to dial in on a couple of little instructions.” Vocalization is Miller’s preferred method, so she’s always talking through what she needs to do, especially in the alley. “I was a little self-conscious about people seeing me talking to myself at the NFR,” she chuckled, “but when I actually watched the replay, you couldn’t tell. I’m big on verbalization. Jana (Turner) would say it out loud to me too (in the alleyway) when she turned away from Chongo, she’d say ‘Sit down. Look at your spots. Let’s go to the South Point.’ That’s what she said every night. That little boost of confidence at the end—Let’s go to the South Point— helped too. You’ve got to stay positive. I try to focus on what I do need to do and what it takes to execute it properly.” Mental Toughness with Jimmie Smith continued on next page
