ALUMNI CHRONICLES I had begun my undergraduate studies at Nirma University with no awareness of what would be taught in the Mechanical Engineering field. For the same reason, I ended up enjoying those 4 years learning from this department and at the same time taking up a minor in Computer Science to broaden my knowledge. The faculty of the Mechanical Engineering department was the most generous in terms of their time and support. Their support in allowing me to take up projects in Robotics, despite it not being very popular, helped me shape my career path. Raima Sen Even during COVID, their promptness LinkedIn: in communicating with the universities I was applying to for master’s was extremely https://www.linkedin.com/in/se nraima/ beneficial and helped me secure very good admits. My time at Team Arrow also was memorable as I got to work on a UAV with some very supportive seniors from various branches. With the encouragement of our faculty advisor, we were able to take part in the AUVSI-SUAS competition in the US in 2019. It was initially difficult to make friends in class, but the ones I made have become family. Overall, I had initially thought that 4 years is a long time, but it flew by in the best way possible. Currently, I am pursuing my graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania. The thought of getting into an Ivy League school was unimaginable, but the way I was conditioned at Nirma, made this possible. I am working my way towards a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Robotics. This niche field is truly challenging and interesting at the same time, but I have come well-versed from my experiences at Nirma. I am also a Research Assistant at the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab, where I work on a project that directly impacts patients in Botswana in need of rehab devices. 21

My career path till now has been entirely in academics, which I appreciate. I also wish to pursue a career in the Research and Development department of the Robotics Industry, and if given a chance I would choose specifically surgical robot companies. The field of robotics is extremely diverse and has a lot of scope, so I hope more of my juniors take up interest in this field. At Nirma University, I was able to lay a strong foundation in my career and shall always be grateful for the same. Hi, I am Vanshil Shah, a 2019 batch mechanical engineering pass out. I am currently pursuing mechanical engineering at University of Pennsylvania with Robotics specialization. Nirma holds a special place in my heart and more so does the mechanical department. The pedagogy adapted by the professors at the university have had a great impact in my thought process and the person I am today. I am very grateful to Nirma University and the mechanical engineering department for all the teachings. I hope I will be able to give Vanshil Shah back to my alma mater in some way possible. LinkedIn: And a piece of advice that I would like https://www.linkedin.com/in/v to give to my juniors, it would more be sort anshil-shah-11689157/ of a piece of advice that I am giving to my past self. 'Focus on Maths. Get those Linear algebra concepts right in 2nd semester. They will help a lot, irrespective of the domain that you choose. 4 years seem like a lot, but believe me they get over very fast. One moment you would be sitting in the Law canteen for \" discussion regarding your project\" and the other you would be walking with your friends on convocation day. Please invest time in whatever field you want to go in. There are a lot of resources on the internet. Take initiative. Mail random people who are doing great in that field for advice. I could write another essay on the importance of cold emailing. All in all, invest your time wisely, it will definitely reap awards believe me. 22

Pursuing Mechanical Engineering from Nirma will always be one of the best decisions of my life. It has been an amalgamation of amazing mentors in the form of faculties, the best of peer groups and a whole lot of cherishable memories. When I reminisce about my life at Nirma, I see the set of competencies that got built over a period of time in me. “We don’t grow when things are easy, we grow when we face challenges.” I resonate completely with this adage. Challenges in the form of academics, attendance (has been a major challenge throughout), extracurriculars Satkirat Singh Ahuja (SAE BAJA, President - MESA) and whatnot. LinkedIn: Skills like Planning, time management, https://www.linkedin.com/in/sa leadership, delegation and proper tkirat-singh/ mentorship have escalated me on a learning curve and led to my personal as well as professional development which is playing a vital role post-graduation. Currently I’m working as an Assistant Manager with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India in their Chennai OEM Sales Team. I’m also planning my next career step of pursuing a management degree. 23

NOT ALL THE PLANS WE MAKE IN LIFE ARE FULFILLED.!! When a plan fails, most people are unable to accept it. One of the reasons this happens is that most planning is completely fixed. That means there is no way to make changes even when needed. When circumstances take an unexpected turn, people think they lack their ability to handle it. Here it is to admit that the plans we made can fail. Sometimes circumstances also go against our will. Even though our planning is perfect, we may not bring the expected results. Whether your plan is small or big, whether it's the beginning stage or near completion, don't give up even if it fails for some reason. It is very important for you to maintain the stability of your mind at such times. Re-evaluate your plans by keeping yourself calm and think about new ways to improve them. “Ups and downs come when we are walking towards our goal. It's a great thing we already plan to cope with these ups and downs, but even though it is very carefully and thoroughly planned, it can still fail.” A failed plan should not be seen as a failure. Just a plan failed, not you. Even if it takes some time, rebuild yourself. Start new with a little flexible planning approach. Often failed plans are not meant to stop us but it helps us find new ideas and ways. And if this didn't fail, we wouldn't have discovered new paths. Dr. MayurKumar A Makhesana 24

RESPONSE OF SYSTEM SUBJECTED TO EXTERNAL EXCITATIONS – MIND OF LEADERS AND DISTURBED MIND RESPONSE OF SYSTEM TO EXTERNAL EXCITATION ACTING AT FREQUENCY “F” Fig. 1 indicates a SYSTEM comprising of spring Fig. 1 “SYSTEM” subjected to (k) and mass (m) along with ENERGY EXTERNAL EXCITING FORCE ABSORBING UNIT called damper. The system is acting AT EXTERNAL FREQUENCY subjected to EXTERNAL EXCITATION acting at frequency “f”. This study is very fundamental in the Dynamics of Machines. The response of the system is indicated to Fig. 2. The response simply means the amplitude (level to which system gets excited, level to which system gets disturbed). The response depends on the ratio (r) of frequency of external excitation “f” to the natural frequency of system “fn” and the ENERGY ABSORBING UNIT called damper. Of the particular interest are the two values of “r”. r=1 is called as resonance condition. Fig. 2 Response of system to EXTERNAL Clearly when r=1 the amplitude of the EXCITATION. The ratio (r) of EXTERNAL system is very high. At resonance EXCITATION FREQ / NATURAL FREQ and condition if ENERGY ABSORBING UNIT damper is not present, the response is the energy absorbing capability uncontrollable. At resonance condition, DAMPING play major role. ENERGY ABSORBING UNIT is essential to control the response. The best is to avoid the condition of resonance. If “r” is very high, the response diminishes to zero, meaning thereby, the system is calm and cool and unaffected by the presence of EXTERNAL EXCITATION “f”. 25

ANALOGY WITH INDIVIDUAL IN THE EXTERNAL EXCITATION OF WORLD Natural frequency “fn” is the nature of the individual. It is his / her nature. Nature, to great extent determines the response i.e., level to which response of an individual will be with high amplitude or highly excited. Can the natural frequency i.e., nature of an individual changed? Yes, it can be. A contemplative mind is one which changes “fn” based on the need of situation. The EXTERNAL EXCITATION acts at frequency “f”. This is what the world around throws at each and every moment. It is incidents, behaviour of the people around us, Facebook and WhatsApp posts, tweets etc. Note here that the nature of “f” is highly changing and at each moment an individual is dealing with different value of “f”. So, it is always desirable that an individual should operate at high “r” and always avoid r=1. The range of EXTERNAL EXCITATION “f” that the world throws at us is very wide. So, to operate at very high “r” and to avoid “r=1”, an individual as to change is NATURAL FREQUENCY i.e., nature at each situation “fn”. SYSTEM 1 - DISTURBED MIND VARIABLE NATURAL FREQ ALWAYS LEADING TO R=1 A disturbed mind is one which always operates at r=1. It has the NATURAL FREQUENCY so that whatever EXTERNAL EXCITATION the world throws, leads to r=1. So, any EXTERNAL EXCITATION (things happening in and around) the disturbed mind leads to excited state (high amplitude), upset or in complaint mode. Obviously for the disturbed minds, very strong ENERGY ABSORBING UNIT dampers (good friends, mentors counsellors) are always essential to keep their excitations in check. 26

SYSTEM 2 - MIND OF LEADER VARIABLE NATURAL FREQ LEADING TO VERY HIGH “R” Leaders too have variable NATURAL FREQUENCY but to ensure that the system always operate at very high “r”. This ensures that the EXCITATIONS are very minimal and within check. How do leaders achieve this? Meditation, enhancing the self-awareness are the methods. Even if leaders have to operate at r=1 at few occasions, they have very internal ENERGY DISSIPITATION DAMPING SYSTEM which will not let the RESPONSE/ EXCITATION / AMPLITUDE go dangerously high values, Additionally, they are SELF AWARE of this happening as a spectator and can quickly reach very high value of “r” leading to safe handling of incident. Dr. Shashikant J Joshi 27

A CONVERSATION AT THE END OF DESTINY The sun sets in the sure hopes of rising again. The waves, they signify ups and downs in life. This breeze, carries with it the aura, the fragrance of one land along with it; it may probably be crossing the entire marine space separating two far distinct lands. It is indeed a pleasant feeling to be on the shore, wondering how far these waves travel! \"I was waiting for you\", he said. \"I was desperate to meet you too\", she replied. Both seemed happy to see each other, as if two inseparable souls met like they were destined to meet in the end. \"You had a long way to come. How was your journey?\", he asked. \"Indeed a long way, the entire journey was a bit tiring. But I feel it was totally worthy\", was her reply. It had to be worthy, as nature planned the events for itself. They both felt complete. \"What all did you see on your way?\", was his next question. She replied, \"I saw various things along my route. A variety of culture, habitat, traditions and all types of places. I saw lush green forests, as well as intense drylands where I struggled for my existence. I saw how the same thing is done through various beliefs and deeds. How people's actions differ, but the intention, the belief is the same and how it is offered to the same almighty.\" 28

She continued, \"I originated from the high, icy mountains, as a narrow stream and how my flow kept on getting stronger and stronger as I kept on adding to myself. As I flowed down, I was wide enough with the utmost force, still bounded in my streamline. I played the role of a lifeline at some places too. I saw how the trees stood still while I was in my constant motion. I have seen people's joy and their sorrow as well. How one is happy with a little and how the other is unsatisfied possessing a lot. At some places they worshiped me. I saw how they called me by different names at different places I passed by! How many others joined me along my journey. I could see their joy and relief as they poured themselves to me being free from their own hustle. But whatever it be, everyone had a similar feeling associated with me. My journey had been wonderful.\" \"What all did you see in your vastness? Are you the same for everyone or they call you by different names to?\", she asked him. Replying to it he said, \"I have seen far off land separated by me, or I would say 'connected by me'. I have seen totally opposite and different cultures on both of my ends. Though their practices might be different, the human is the same all over. I have a lot to see in my own self, I may get lost in it, I am far deep. Looking away is more interesting. Unlike you, I am the same for everyone in every corner of my reach. I have a singular universal name and largely I play the same role for everyone. People sure are interesting all around. I have seen way more variety of practices than you did. I have seen complex languages, totally discrete on both ends. But at the same time, I have realized that language is not what it needs to communicate. One could communicate even without words, and that is the purest form of communication one would ever know.\" 29

\"I would surely like to see far distinct lands which are in your reach,\" she said excitedly. \"Definitely, that shall be the beginning of your another journey, 'our journey' I should say.“ He thought for a moment and continued, \"There's this thing I always wanted to ask you. You are completely aware of my nature. How briny, how tangy I am! Still in the end you join me, and that too with sheer contentment. You add up to me leaving behind your own self, your sweetness. The way you sacrifice yourself, what makes you do so? Don't you regret it?\" She smiled and said, \"Dear, that is my love for you, and love itself means sacrifice! That is what my fate had planned for me and that could never be altered. By dissolving into you I have always experienced the freedom which everyone craves for. It is the best feeling to be in you and feel your vastness leaving behind the stream of my flow. This freedom completely makes me forget my own self, my own taste and this freedom never let me have the feel of your brine. I never regret it. No one regrets freedom!\" He was pleased by what she said, blessed, and satisfied to have someone like her. He again asked, \"You could have been free like me in your own way. You could have altered your path. There was no need to be in streamline. You could have been vast, and I know you know this. Why didn't you choose that?\" 30

She replied, \"If I had chose that, that would have resulted in great destruction, distress, and cries of sorrow all around. I can not be free by making others suffer. That would have been complete devastation to everyone on my route. That's not freedom, and that journey would not really have been a journey. Freedom is felt by being free without causing misery to others. Nature plays its role perfectly. It takes care of every life, of you, and of me too.\" He was surprised and amazed by her reply. Deeply pleased, he said, \"That is indeed true and great of you. No doubt why they call you a lifeline. You can sacrifice to that extent like that of a mother.“ She said, \"I am happy. Now take me to the other end, and in every corner within your reach. I am desperate, it is 'our journey' after all“ \"Yeah, sure! Let's go!!\" he answered joyfully. And this way the perfect cycle of nature keeps on going till the existence of life on Earth Harshal Patil (19BME108) 31

LET'S DEAL WITH THIS IMPOSTER SYNDROME Every one of us has this belief that we are an inadequate and incompetent failure despite all the skills and success we have. We try to compare our tractions with the best ones in the domain and keeping a blind eye on the strengths that we can leverage. It can be someone's confidence, followers, growth, and infinite other parameters that we benchmark. Okay, I get it but how to overcome this? 1. We have to start normalizing asking others for Most people around the internet or in general are ready to help. We are the ones who assume all whys and hows. Ankur Warikoo says \" If you don't ask, the answer is always NO \". 2. We all are underconfident when it comes to leveraging our skills. We all have that one particular combination of skills in which we are better than others but we kind of ignore or are unaware of that. Humans love going on a guilt trip and credit to social media for showing it in front of our faces. The basic solution to this is to admire or celebrate our milestones more frequently. We don't have to be that superman/woman who will only celebrate their achievements once in four years. 3. We don't have to be the perfectionist or an expert from day one. We won't be creating the best blogs, best videos, or best presentations on day one and we have to accept that and start producing more with a slight improvement. The grass is always greener on the other side. Nishchal Mehta (19BME070) 32

AGONY OF THE RESTLESS HEART Today I saw her in black n blue, Glowing like this magnificent moon's Hue! Babe, my love is brand new, I would fight for you, the battle of Waterloo.. I was staring her... Like I would stare at the moon on a cold n cozy night! Wanted to tell you, That I wanna bloom in your arms... Like the moon blooms in the night's arms! But words never left the Mouth... I fear this may all go south! This is killing me from inside! I wonder, will you ever be mine... --Raj Akbary (18BME094) 34

HIDDEN ROSES he sat there on the corner table waiting for the one he loved as soon as he saw her smile his confidence caved wanted to talk his heart out to her but as he looked in her eyes in his heart , the fear of losing her paved his love for her was immense hence he protected her from himself to his people , this didn't make sense but he kept her alive everyday by killing himself his pleasure lay in her voice and not in her body his perfect nights were out on the roads holding her hand while gazing the stars he watched her hold someone else's hands kept his heart away from breaking watched her eyes glitter when she was with him held his tears back , found happiness in hers watched her settle down with someone else once again hid the rose in his jacket waited all his life for the perfect moment fought his heart every morning and slept in torment her name were his last words --Deepankar Trivedi but her absence was his last feeling (21BME020) 35

गलततयांा We all make errors; it's a natural human propensity; nevertheless, the person who examines the situation critically emerges with the best version of themselves. Allowing minor disagreements between couples, friends, and family members to damage the lifetime link is not a good idea. To get the depth in the connections, it needs a lot of effort, time, and other resources. Please don't let it go!! The poetry below expresses the same sentiment.
