MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 Of duties done in charity, soft speech and stainless days…..Dr Mitesh Panchal- a Tribute by Dr V J Lakhera, Professor, Mechanical Engineering We worked together for over 5 years in the mechanical engineering department and there was always a noticeable smiling comfort and poise with which Dr Miteshbhai conducted himself. The remarkable notice was a complete smoothness and simplicity in his manners and behaviour. Whatever and whenever the duties assigned to him, he always accepted them with a positive attitude and without any reservations. During my tenure as the head of department, apart from academic assignments, he was nominated for important assignments including to work as Member Secretary for BTech Admissions at the Institute level and performed it smoothly. Also in the last academic year, during the pandemic and complete lockdown, for compiling and coordinating the final semester project mark sheet for about 150 students examined by over 10 examination panels, Sri Miteshbhai did an exemplary work by centrally coordinating the same with colleagues. As it was a full transition from offline to fully online mode, and a completely new activity level for both students and faculty, the coordination required an extra-ordinary patience and management and he worked it with full dedication and involvement. He had a simple down to earth and humble approach in life and devoid of any arrogance despite being highly qualified from premier institutions IISc Bangalore and IIT Roorkee where he pursued his post-graduation and research degrees. [A photograph with IIT Roorkee alumni shared on FB and Twitter by Director, IIT Roorkee Dr A K Chaturvedi Sir during his visit to IT, NU in Feb 2020.] 4

MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 Dr Miteshbhai was an active devotee of Anoopam Mission and fully involved in daily devotional as well as social activities and service at the mission. During the testing times of pandemic, while most people would safely be inside their homes, he along with his family actively involved in the various social welfare activities. While he stayed at Vithhal Udyognagar, Anand (near the Anoopam Mission) and driving to and fro to the workplace in Ahmedabad (a distance of more than 100 km everyday), with a disciplined and committed approach, he was always punctual to reach office well before the scheduled time. The spiritual orientation and submission to God was also reflected during the tough times faced by the family during his hospitalization. The strength and resolve reflected by his wife and family during the course of his treatment was extra-ordinary and a reflection of complete spiritual approach and devotion. It is an example of the best way to live life - a complete acceptance and to have faith in Almighty in all situations. The last meeting we had was in the A-Block and he informed me of shifting his office cabin to the 11th floor in the New Building. Dr Miteshbhai smiled as we talked about the divine aerial view of the Sri Swaminarayan Gurukul from the window of his new cabin…… By engaging in devotional service to the Lord, the devotees free themselves from the results of work in the material world. In this way they become free from the cycle of birth and death and attain the state beyond all miseries by going back to Godhead. - Bhagavad Gita [Chapter 2 ; 51] 5

MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 ARTICLES New Education Policy 2020 Highlights: Key takeaways for higher education The aim of New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education including vocational education from 26.3% to 50% by 2035. The New Education Policy is set to bring a slew of major changes including allowing top foreign universities to set up campuses to India, a greater proportion of students getting vocational education and a move towards institutes including IITs turning multi- disciplinary. The policy aims at making ―India a global knowledge superpower‖. One of the stated aims of the policy is to instil a ―deep-rooted pride‖ in being Indian, not only in thought, but also in spirit, intellect, and deeds, as well as to develop knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions that support responsible commitment to human rights, sustainable development and living, and global well-being. The policy also aims at ―light but tight‖ regulation by a single regulator for higher education as well as o increased access, equity, and inclusion. The NEP lays down that by 2040, all higher education institutions (HEIs) shall aim to become multidisciplinary institutions, each of which will aim to have 3,000 or more students. There shall, by 2030, be at least one large multidisciplinary institution in or near every district. The aim will be to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education including vocational education from 26.3% to 50% by 2035. Single-stream higher education institutions will be phased out over time, and all will move towards becoming multidisciplinary. The system of ‗affiliated colleges‘ will be gradually phased out in 15 years. The present complex nomenclature of HEIs in the country such as ‗deemed to be University‘, ‗Affiliating University‘, ‗Affiliating Technical University‘, and ‗Unitary University‘ shall be replaced simply by ‗University‘. A University will mean a multidisciplinary institution that offers undergraduate and graduate programmes, with high quality teaching, research, and community engagement. The definition will allow a spectrum of institutions ranging from those that place equal emphasis on teaching and research i.e., Research- intensive Universities to teaching-intensive Universities. One of the paradigmatic shift will be the setting up of the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) for the entire higher education segment. The HECI will be act as a single regulator and several functions, including accreditation, funding and academic standard setting, will be carried out by independent verticals. These entities will be eventually replace other regulatory bodies like the University Grant Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Key impact areas: I. Quality Universities and colleges through large scale consolidation II. A higher education system that is accessible and inclusive III. A quality and well incentivised faculty at the core of higher education transformation IV. Promoting excellence through internationalisation V. Accountability and transparency as levers for improved governance 13

MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 • The undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4-year duration, with multiple exit options. For instance a certificate after completing 1 year in a discipline or field including vocational and professional areas, or a diploma after 2 years of study, or a Bachelor‘s degree after a 3-year programme. The 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor‘s programme, however, shall be the preferred option. • Even engineering institutions, such as IITs, will move towards more holistic and multidisciplinary education with more arts and humanities. Students of arts and humanities will aim to learn more science • Departments in Languages, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Indology, Art, Dance, Theatre, Education, Mathematics, Statistics, Pure and Applied Sciences, Sociology, Economics, Sports, Translation and Interpretation, etc. will be established and strengthened at all HEIs. • An Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) shall be established which would digitally store the academic credits earned. • The 4-year programme may also lead to a degree ‗with Research‘ if the student completes a rigorous research project.  Model public universities for holistic and multidisciplinary education, at par with IITs, IIMs, etc., called MERUs (Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities) will be set up. • Higher education institutions shall move away from high-stakes examinations towards continuous and comprehensive evaluation. • Flexible curricular structure that will offer multi point entry and exit points to create new possibilities for lifelong learning. • Career progression pathways for faculty based on teaching, research and service for faculty and institutional leadership. • India will be promoted as a global study destination providing premium education at affordable costs. An International Students Office at each institution hosting foreign students will be set up. • High performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries. Selected universities like those from among the top 100 universities in the world will be facilitated to operate in India. • A legislative framework facilitating such entry will be put in place, and such universities will be given special dispensation regarding regulatory, governance, and content norms on par with other autonomous institutions of India • In every education institution, there shall be counselling systems for handling stress and emotional adjustments. 14

MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 • Vocational education will be integrated into all school and higher education institutions in a phased manner over the next decade. By 2025, at least 50% of learners through the school and higher education system shall have exposure to vocational education. • The B.Voc. Degrees introduced in 2013 will continue to exist, but vocational courses will also be available to students enrolled in all other Bachelor‘s degree programmes, including the 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor‘s programmes. • ‗Lok Vidya‘, i.e., important vocational knowledge developed in India, will be made accessible to students. The HRD ministry, which could be renamed education ministry, would constitute a National Committee for the Integration of Vocational Education (NCIVE). • The policy also speaks for creating a National Research Foundation (NRF) to coordinate research funding and direct it to outstanding peer-reviewed research. • The policy also mentions the creation of a Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). Policy also explains in details about opportunities and key considerations for stake holders namely State Governments, HEIs, faculty, students, industry and other service providers. References: 1. MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 Writing an Abstract – Guidelines from पूर्व मीमासंा ा School of Indian Philosophy. नमस्कार, Dear Students. The journey of writing abstract begins normally with the course Seminar in B Tech Sem V. On all important occasions like B Tech project Report, M Tech Project Report, M S Dissertation, Ph D Thesis, Research Paper, etc., writing abstract in the manner that will convey the entire gist of work carried out is very critical. The limit of words for writing abstract may range from 150 to 1500. परू ्व मीमाासं ा is a school of Indian Philosophy. The word मीमासंा ा means critical investigation. परू ्व मीमासंा ा methodology for establishing the thesis can be considered as an important guideline for writing the abstract. As per Purva Mimansa school, the seven points for establishing a thesis are उपक्रम , उपसंाहार , अभ्यास , अपरू ्तव ा , फऱ , अर्रव ्ाद , उपपत्तत . We can consider that the abstract must include these seven points. Irrespective of limit of words, these points will be helpful or writing the abstract. उपक्रम – Introduction. The first sentence of the abstract should be introductory sentence, providing the information about the area/ topic which is being discussed. उपसहंा ार – Hypothesis. –The starting point for investigation. Necessity of the investigation being carried out. अभ्यास – The study being carried out. The exact information about the nature of investigation being carried out. अपरू ्तव ा – Indication of originality – Unique features of the study undertaken and investigation carried out. फऱ – Results obtained and their significance. अर्रव ्ाद – Arguments in support of the results obtained. उपपत्तत – Conclusions from the study. We shall take one case study. We shall see how these points are embedded in the following abstract of the research paper titled ―Experimental investigation on spring-back deformation during autoclave curing of parabolic antenna reflectors‖ Abstract: - High dimensional fidelity is the primary challenge for the large size carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) antenna reflectors used in space applications. (उपक्रम – Introduction) Selection of crucial process parameters governs dimensional control of a composite product (उपसाहं ार – Hypothesis). In this paper, the influence of the mould materials, curing cycle, lay-up sequence and laminate thickness on spring-back deformation during autoclave curing is investigated by fabricating a large number of parabolic reflectors using the unidirectional prepreg system (अभ्यास – The study being carried out). The non-contact type accurate 3Dscanning technique is used to measure the dimensions of the parabolic antenna reflectors. In the present work, an experimental approach is adopted for the determination of a combination of process parameters which gives minimum spring- back deformation. (अपरू ्तव ा – Indication of originality) The results reveal that the spring-back deformation of parabolic reflectors is significantly affected by the mould material and laminate thickness, whereas the lay-up sequence and curing cycle do not have a significant effect. (फऱ – Results obtained and their significance). The 16

MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 mould materials and laminate thickness have a major effect on spring-back deformation because of mould part interaction and area moment of inertia respectively. (अर्रव ्ाद – Arguments in support of the results obtained) It is important to note that the combination of invar mould material, single hold cycle, quasi-isotropic lay-up sequence and 2 mm laminate thickness has lowest spring-back deformation among all combinations. MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 Exiting Teenage In today‘s generation, kids are excited to become an adult, but they often forget that with becoming an adult, they are exiting their teenage. Their life is about to take a drastic turn as they will meet their responsibilities. The things they learned till now will be applied in real life situations and their abilities will be tested every day. Some of their dreams might fade away, some might become a reality. The goals they had will now have a deadline and a path full of obstacles ready to test their skills and bring out the best in them. This race has the ability to change their perception of the world as a boy who was once an average would achieve great things while the class topper might fail at the test of life. While planning to achieve the goal one must also plan for failure. What if they fail? Always remember failure is not the end. All it does is motivate us to achieve our goal in a better way, more efficient way. No school teaches about failure and how to deal with it. One should learn from failure and rise again to achieve success. One of the major problems faced by today‘s generation is Anxiety. It is a common problem but one must learn to deal with it. Anxiety can easily affect our performance as it decreases our efficiency. You become nervous, your heart rate increases and you start sweating when you feel anxious. In this period of life you will get an urge to start earning as your parents who were once young now seem to be getting old. The feeling that you want to do something to make their lives a little bit easy will drive you and motivate you. People try to start a new business but always remember that a job can also help you get a momentum in your life. There might be pressure from your parents to do something with your life but that is only because they are worried for you. They want the best for their child. In this process, they sometime forget that their child might be fighting his/her own battle of life as they have a lot to figure out about what they want to be and where would they like to go with their life. The friends you thought who will be forever in your life might become distant and someone you would have never thought of will become your best friend. ―To grow, you have to let go‖, that is the harsh rule of life. Learn to accept changes and adapt. If you are a teenager who is about to enter adulthood, you are in for a lot of surprises, but it will help you grow and find a purpose for your life. Life has endless possibilities and what you make out of it is in your hands. Take risks while you still can, once this phase is over, you will surely enjoy the memories when you look back at it.As you will go further in your life, you will learn from your experiences. The mistakes that you made when you were young has made you a wise and hardworking man that you are today. A mistake or a failure is not the end of life, there are always other ways to grow further. Adulthood can be amazing and the best time of one‘s life if they make the right choices at the right time. - Kairav Aacharya (19BME003) 18

MECHदतू , ISSUE-2 POETRY Time: The Kingmaker! Human Psychology says, it‘s a human tendency that very often in life we tend to lose our hopes, control on our emotions and what not. Despite working very hard and having perseverance for our dreams sometimes we don‘t get the results when we desire. Universe (god, allah, father or positive forces) takes time to give results to us irrespective of our hard work. One says that my luck doesn‘t help me with my hard work.Tough times come to everyone but the one who tackles this efficiently emerges as a warrior and that boosts their confidence, patience and this overall develops the attitude of gratitude. It is just a matter of time. Here is a short poem on the abovementioned thought. (1) - Ashutosh Pandey (18bme013) 19

Wishing to cross Himalaya, But afraid of falling down; Longing for a luxury, But afraid of packed paths; As I‘m Afraid of Failure. Wanna win the world, But what if I lose? Charm is here to me; For each and every path, But which should I choose? If the wrong choice; I‘m again Afraid of Failure. Next day as I open my eyes, With a peace of mind, I realise; It needs just the interest and efforts, And the smile of success on face; Overthinking leads to depression and time wastes, Working takes to the destiny and life harvests; So I do ask, Is there a need for being ―Afraid of Failure?‖ The answer is definitely ―NO‖. – Om Lalvani (20BME060) 20
