SAKS FIFTH AVENUE honors NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDEN and the2016 SUSTAINING LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
A Note From Your ChairsWe are thrilled you have joined us to support the 2015 Hats in the Garden luncheon. This year’s runway program, Confection Collection, offers delectable designs thatcomplement the glorious fashions. We have engaged some of Naples most accomplishedchefs to make this happen. Thank you to Carolina Catering, Catermasters, Grace andShelley’s Cupcakes, Kakes by Karen, Lurcat Catering, Ritz Carlton Resorts of Naples, and Tony’s off Third. They will be working their magic, highlighting edible plants andflowers from the Garden as they turn them into stunning edible accessories to be featuredon the runway. It has been wonderful to watch the excitement build as the teams workedout their designs. We also want to recognize Rufino Hernandez, whose imagination, vision, and creative talent push us all to be the best! Hats in the Garden is, once again, the perfect place to show off the talent we have in Naples. We are pleased to welcome back Northern Trust as our presenting sponsor. Our retailpartner, Saks Fifth Avenue, has provided a fashion dream team, this year bringing theiconic styles of Carolina Herrera to our runway. Their support has been fabulous. Ourvery special longtime media partner Naples Illustrated is joined by a national publication, flower Magazine this year as well. The support we receive from our sponsors is critical tothe success of Hats- many thanks to all of you!We are most excited to share our 2015 Fund-A-Garden program, the Southwest FloridaOrchid Restoration Project. Our local wild areas that were once teeming with millions ofnative orchids are now witnessing a rapid decline in both abundance and diversity oforchid species. The Garden is collaborating with different organizations, including TheSmithsonian Institute, to strengthen the genetic diversity of threatened orchid populationsand to establish a “critical mass” of plants. With the funds we raise during Fund-A-Garden, the Garden hopes to preserve these natural treasures for generations to comethrough laboratory trials with seed propagation to community-supported conservationand education efforts with local 6th graders. The Sustaining Leadership Council continues to be a source of outstanding support andleadership for the Garden. We are proud to be part of this extraordinary group of women, all of whom contribute to the success of Hats in the Garden.Thank you all for coming! Kathy Woods Event Chair 2016 Hats in the Garden

A Time for Celebration and Thanks! As we write this note, the Garden is abuzz with activity! The final preparations for thisyear’s Hats in the Garden – The Faces of Naples are almost complete. Every year, the HatsChairs come up with novel and amazing ways to kick off the Naples’ season with apageant of creativity, fashion, and style. This year’s chair, Kathy Woods is no exception! She has come up with a truly stunning event, unlike anything Naples has seen before. Wecan hardly wait to see her creation! We have been busy on many fronts. The redesigned Karen and Robert Scott FloridaGarden is getting its finishing touches. The plans for our first wellness symposium,Flourish in the Garden: A Celebration of the Power of Flowers to Create Beauty, Health andHappiness to be held January 13 through 15, are almost complete. The development of thegoals and strategies for Vision 2026 is underway – this plan will guide our growth for thenext decade and beyond. The Garden and Artis–Naples have joined forces to bring a major sculpture exhibit,Origami in the Garden by artist Kevin Box, to our community. Both organizations willhave an extensive show of the artist’s work as well as lectures and workshops celebratingorigami. The Garden will open Origami in the Garden on December 3 and will feature30 sculptures located throughout the grounds. We will be open on several eveningsthroughout the winter so that you can explore the show and the gardens after dark! And any day now, Naples Botanical Garden will be welcoming its 1,000,000th visitor! This is the 13th annual Hats in the Garden. The importance of this event to the Gardenreally can’t be overstated. Over the years it has provided the funding to support a widerange of projects from rescuing ancient trees, to conserving our endangered nativeorchids, to establishing school gardens, and developing vocational programs for ourcommunity’s exceptional kids. So, we thank you for attending Hats in the Garden andsupporting our initiatives to serve our community. Many thanks as well to long-timesponsor Northern Trust and fashion sponsor Saks Fifth Avenue. Come volunteer!Find your niche!Earn a nickname! JIM KUPEC “BANANAMAN” Over the years, Jim Kupec has become quite adept at trimming the Banana plants — a thankless, messy job as banana sap will stain anything and everything it comes in contact with. He has earned his nickname honestly with a ton of hard, skilled work! Our banana plants always look great!Pictured: Jim Kupec | “BananaMan”DAVID WHITSETT“LUBBERBUSTER”When the huge, colorful grasshoppersknown as lubbers are newly hatched, theyare small black hoppity bugs that areEVERYWHERE! They will devour plants!Dave Whitsett’s ‘garden tool’ of choice is aDust Buster. He goes after these hoppitybugs with a passion — Dust Buster inhand, scooping up all lubbers in his path...thus his well-earned nickname:“LubberBuster.” Pictured: David Whitsett | “LubberBuster” Volunteers who come on a regular basis to the Garden and can find their niche are in high demand! If you are interested in volunteering, please visit naplesgarden.org, click on “Support” then “Volunteer.”
