Acting As An Innovator Alaa Agha and Mai Qalaja Creative Spirits Go Green Planting Through Recycling Items #Innovate4Palestine | 2022

Problem we were solving: The main problem we found that our student's lack of exposing to green culture in our surrounding area. Also, we decided to use raw materials to make our environment sustainable. The main reasons for choosing the project are : 1. Lack of connection between real life and curriculum regarding the plants. Our students learn about the plants in abstract way without using their senses for example see , touch, smell, and taste the plants. 2. Students need to see green life in their surrounding. Students don’t see the agriculture elements as they live in Gaza strip which has a small space crowded with people and buildings. 3. Lack of materials in Gaza in addition to environment pollution. #Innovate4Palestine

Project Description The main activities we conducted to establish our project were the following: • First of all, we studied the situation and noticed the problem and we met the school teachers and discussed the problem with them. • After that, we presented the idea of the problem to the school management, and we found a very good welcoming from them. We selected two classes from grade one and five in order to implement the project ( 30 students). • We made several meetings with teachers teaching different subjects in the school who are going to participate in the project (science, arts, social studies, and English teachers). #Innovate4Palestine

Project Description • We distributed a questionnaire using google forum for the parents in order to make the vision clearer. • We held two meetings with students: The first one we explained the project and we felt that they are so excited to start. The second meeting, they watched a video about the plants and green life and how to plant in the recycled items. • We arranged a visit to a nursery in order to give the students the chance to know more about the plants and to bring out some plants and flowers. • The students planted on the recycled items and we documented every stage #Innovate4Palestine

Goals of Project 1. Facilitate understanding of the agriculture environment. 2. Teach students about agriculture like: plants parts, seeds, crops and organic food. 3. Reinforce the culture of green life and taking responsibility upon the plants . 4. Reducing the amount of waste items around us. 5. Adding a beautiful appearance to the school. 6. Exploring the students 'art skills. #Innovate4Palestine

Our project will be under SDG’s: • 3.Good health and well being. • 8. Descent work and economic growth. • 13. Climate action. • 14.Life below water. • 15. Life on land. • 17.Partnerships with the goals. #Innovate4Palestine

Stages • 1.planning stage : it contains many procedures as the following: A. Meeting with School Administration to put the plan and its steps. #Innovate4Palestine

B. Teacher's meetings with students to discuss the idea of the project. #Innovate4Palestine

C. Distribution of approval letter for parents to have a permission for participation and posting pictures on websites. #Innovate4Palestine

2. Implementation stage: The activities are: A. Collecting raw materials: #Innovate4Palestine

B. Visiting a nursery: #Innovate4Palestine

C. Contact with painter and metal worker. #Innovate4Palestine

D. Outsides activity (draw the plant after nursery visit) #Innovate4Palestine

E. Painting the recycled items with art teacher help. #Innovate4Palestine

F. Science teacher participation to discuss the plant parts. #Innovate4Palestine

G. Cooperating with painter to add the beautiful touch to a wall where the students planted. Before After #Innovate4Palestine

3.Assessment Stage • A. Agriculture engineer visit to do the practical planting with students. #Innovate4Palestine

B. Final product (everyone is happy with our new wall in the school ) #Innovate4Palestine

Impact of the Project For students: 1. Students were so excited and motivated to learn how to plant the seeds , herbs on the recycled material. 2. They were telling everyone about planting process, and plant parts, and how to use the recycled material in planting which affect positively on us as teachers. And they plantedsome plants at their homes. #Innovate4Palestine

Impact of the Project For the environmental side 1. The students reused the recycled items in order to reduce waste. Also, the project added a beautiful scene for a wall which was ignored and it become a \" photo session\" for all the students. #Innovate4Palestine

Impact of the Project For the teacher: 1. The teachers were so engaged in the project especially when they use reality stuff in explaining some lessons in science, social studies, and art. #Innovate4Palestine

Impact of the Project For the future: 1. We discussed that we are going to transfer the experience to our new school campus and establish the \" hydroponic farm \" in the near future. 2. We can transform the positive impact of our school to the surrounding schools of the area of Gaza strip . 3. We will coordinate with the governmental institutions and ministries to held some meeting about the aesthetic cultivation in the local society. #Innovate4Palestine

Lessons Learned The lessons learnt us so many things: 1. How to be patient 2. Responsible for our own thoughts 3. Working under pressure 4. Accept and deal with other's thoughts and ideas 5. To be innovative in your ideas, good planning leads to good work. 6. To appreciate more plants and art #Innovate4Palestine
