RECTOR’S MESSAGE “For all that has been, Thanks. For all that is to come, Yes!” As we come to the close of a very challenging academic year, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld’s words strikes a chord, namely: “For all that has been, thanks. For all that is to come, Yes!” Not many would have imagined in April last year that a year ahead, we would still be ensnared in the throes of the pandemic. And yet, at the end of April 2021, as I write my message to you all, we find ourselves in the midst of a second wave, with hospitals being overwhelmed and restrictions being imposed once again. We have been befallen with social, economic and personal challenges, some of us have lost our loved ones in the past year, and some are still sick. The pandemic has once again made us realize the futility of depending on human prowess alone- but more on each other and on our God. This too shall pass, we need to be patient and hopeful, has been our mantra this past year. We have not given up and kept moving on. For many, these have also been moments of Spiritual Renewal. We have reflected again on the purpose of our life and existence at large and sought answers within. Why am I here in the first place, and what is a good way to live my life, has been a part of our inner journey... As we sincerely acknowledge all the above, it is time now to honestly acknowledge our achievements in the past year; we’ve worked very hard and smart as a TEAM, we’ve supported and reached out to each other, and with God’s Grace, we’ve moved ahead bravely. The challenge is far from over, but with His Grace, the support of each other and our humble effort, we will manage. I want to sincerely appreciate our Principal, Vice-Principal, Head Teacher, the Supervisors, Teachers and our entire school team, for working together in cohesion and successfully completing this school year. A sincere word of appreciation and love to our Staff members Mrs Helen Fernandes and Mrs Madhu Lakhwara as also to our support staff in the Primary Section Mr. Prakash Chavan who retired this year. Thank you for your labour of love, we will miss you all immensely. As I have mentioned to you personally, you are most welcome to come and visit us all at St Dominic Savio’s whenever you feel the need. Congratulations to our Silver Jubilarians, Mrs Sushila Machado and Mrs Nita Pereira. We will officially felicitate you, once things open up, on this very meaningful milestone in your journey with us. We bid adieu to our Vice-Principal, Fr Ranson D’Souza who has been appointed the Principal at Don Bosco Lonavla. Thank you for your contributions here for the last three years. We wish you God’s blessings and success in your new posting. Thank you also to our two outgoing Brothers, namely, Bro. Nevelle and Bro. Vinay. God bless you both and all the best for the journey ahead. We’ve missed our children in the school this past year; we’ve missed all the joyful noise and happiness. I have been praying and have been reminding my community of Salesians to keep praying for our children and each one of you. Keep well then, don’t let your guard down in the pandemic, and have a restful holiday. Remember: Never lose hope, just when you think it’s over, God sends you a miracle. Hence, like Dag Hammarskjöld, with deep faith and humble surrender, we pray: “For all that has been, thanks. For all that is to come, Yes!” - Warm Regards Rev. Fr. Brian Moras Rector

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Savion Family, We closed this institution’s golden jubilee year in December 2019 with grandeur and thanksgiving. We did promise then that we will not rest on past laurels but will continue to refine and innovate as the times required, always staying true to the vision of the school. With the completion of this 51st academic year of 2020-2021 we can truly say that with God’s grace we have stood by this to the best of our abilities. This has required us to dissolve the ossified structures of education as we knew it. It made us regroup, rethink and redefine with collective intelligence as we navigated through an entire year of schooling online! As a school community we have been co-nurtures of this academic year. The school re-innovating itself on the go and creating new stimulating learning possibilities for the students. Parents working towards creating ambient home environments and support systems for their child’s education to roll smoothly along and the students tapping into a renewed sense of self-responsibility and patience as they took ownership of their learning. “At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us” - Albert Schweitzer. Through this year there have been many challenges for all but we have marched on supportive of each other, rekindling each other’s spirits. We have much to be thankful to God for, to reflect upon and even celebrate this year. We are grateful to you, Fr Rector & the Management team for trusting us in every endeavor and supporting us always and we thank vice-principal, Rev Fr Ranson, Br Nevelle and Br Vinay for their valuable contributions and wish them all the best as they take on their new responsibilities. To the heads of sections & teachers, your grit and openness to not just learning afresh to teach in the digital world but also pushing yourselves to do it well speaks volumes of your dedication to your students and the school. You trained all through May and June 2020 and kept networking and upgrading your skills through the year in spite of the many constraints. I thank you for this! To the rest of the staff who helped to keep the machinery of the school well oiled and running smoothly at times when not many ventured out, we are grateful. God bless you. To our staff who have retired or turned silver this year, your many years of service have made the school resilient enough to journey through these unfamiliar times. So, here’s a shout out of gratitude to retired Pre- Primary supervisor Ms Helen Fernandes, Primary teacher Ms Madhu Lakhwara and support staff Mr Prakash Chavan and to our silver jubilarian teachers of the secondary section Ms Sushila Machado and Ms Nita Pereira. Thank you for your love and dedication! We are happy that with the support of you my dear parents & students, we did so much more than fulfill the academic pursuit. From our school-wide reading festival to section-wise events, celebration of days, assemblies, debates and workshops for students and parents we pushed ourselves to create experiences that were more holistic. These were of course with the limitations of working remotely and we do miss having the bustle, the banter and the chuckle of our Savions in the classrooms and on the grounds. We do not know what the new academic year holds in store, but knowing the united spirit we have shared I know we will circumnavigate it all with God’s grace in our sails and Don Bosco as our guide. Wishing my Savion family, a happy holiday away from the glare of the screens. God bless each of you and your families and keep you safe. We look forward to seeing you again! - Ms Valerie Mascarenhas Principal

GOLDEN This memorable day of 22nd JUBILEE December 2019, witnessed the CLOSIING culmination of the celebration of a CEREMONY milestone. St. Dominic Savio High School was blessed with the holy presence of his Eminence Oswald Cardinal Garcias as the Chief Guest. In his address, His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Garcias, thanked the Salesians for the wonderful work they do nurturing the young. We took pride in felicitating this spirit of our ex-Savion priests on this occasion of our Golden Jubilee. On this blissful occasion, the staff of this Institution too expressed their gratitude to the Almighty and took the stage to show the world ‘How Blessed are we...to be a part of Dominic Savio....How Blessed are we.’ The Golden Jubilee Festivities and Closing Ceremony concluded with the lowering of the Golden Jubilee Flag. This was followed by the Annual Day Musical : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=dshs.andheri&set =a.2937243116320069

Dear Readers, Transitions aren’t easy but change is the only constant. The new normal has normalised the use of electronic gadgets and so our cell phones, tabs and laptops have long replaced books, newspapers, magazines and periodicals. And therefore, keeping in trend with the new normal, we proudly present to you the e-version of Saviography : Volume VIII (2020 – 2021). This issue of Saviography is especially dedicated to our Savion warriors, our #saviosnathome : To our staff who are striving hard to constantly stay technologically updated, To our young savions who are constantly defeating the temptation of stepping out of the house, as well as staying mentally strong and acing it To our parents who are selflessly supporting their children and the school in these unusual times. I strongly believe that we will be rewarded for our efforts. St. Dominic Savio will take care of us and our loved ones! As the cover page rightly suggests, this issue of Saviography unlocks the many creative ways explored and used, through which Savion Online Education reached out to its students and various stake holders, with an effort to give them a sense of normalcy even in these extra- ordinary times. As you glance through this issue, I hope every event and article makes you smile and you whisper a prayer for the world to be back on its feet again. I conclude by extending my gratitude to our Chief Patron and Patrons for their constant support and guidance, to the Editors for their time and commitment and to our readers for their generous contribution and enthusiasm. Have a wonderful read and we hope to deliver to you a hard copy of the next issue of Saviography. We are nothing without school, like a cactus without a thorn, Many have become lazy as their writing practice has gone. Teachers’ efforts to prepare lectures have increased, Their dedication and hard work has not all decreased. WRITERS DEN MY SAVION ONLINE EXPERIENCE 2020-2021 has been a remarkable year for everyone. It changed the way we looked at life, relationships, education, careers and the world at large. Schools closed down, education came to a stop. But when light appears darkness disappears and our teachers at St Dominic Savio High School brought light to our world. They worked hard to bring our school home and every home turned into a school. Our academic year 2020-21 began online in June . We started learning on laptops and mobiles. Never did I think that at such an early age in life I would learn how to handle a laptop and be able to study on a mobile phone. Our Savion teachers could not have done better to provide us with a school like atmosphere at home. We would start our class in the morning singing our school anthem and reciting our prayers just like we did in physical school. Our teacher would then start explaining the lessons, showing us videos to understand the subject better and then provide us notes to be done along with homework. We would also have regular formative tests and quizzes that helped us to get a revision of what we learned. We also had various competitions, workshops, along with festive celebrations. Online school for me was really a nice experience and will always be a wonderful year to remember. And I do know and believe when the present situation gets better and the pandemic ends we will once again be able to come back to our physical school and meet our teachers and classmates once again. - Mast. Branson Fernandes STD IV B New Learning = New Normal Books replaced by Phones and Pens replaced by Fingers He no longer writes, He now just types A beginning of New Normal where the teaching still continues from Home I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire school management for continuing teaching during this situation. As a parent, I was worried about the quality of teaching and learning in an online module. But this was perfectly planned and executed by the school management. Information shared about the online education during the parents meeting gave me confidence. I really appreciate the efforts taken by each and every teacher to upgrade themselves on technology and prepare well for the online module. It takes a lot to come out of your comfort zone and try something new so that your students do not suffer. One more time you teachers proved that you can go to any extent for your students and continue teaching. While many other parents are still worried about their children’s education, I am not worried at all. Because I know that my son is in the right hands. During this entire online academic year, not even once my son was stressed about his assessments. Multiple parent meetings, sessions by Prafulta, regular updates helped a lot during this time. Thank you for making this journey easy for all of us. My advice to other Parents – KEEP CALM and LET THE TEACHER HANDLE. - Mrs. Aarti Patel Parent of Mast. Alvin (STD 8A)

WRITERS DEN SAVION ONLINE EDUCATION When my son completed his senior kg and the school was shut abruptly without even having a Graduation Ceremony of the Pre-Primary section, we as parents didn't really know what to expect in the coming year with this pandemic hitting the world so cruelly. However Our school St. Dominic Savio took this up as a challenge and the teachers were ready to start the new academic year Online right on time in mid June. With this sudden shift away from the classroom my son and we were wondering whether the adoption of online learning will be effective or no. However, it was a great start to something that no one would have ever imagined in our lifetime - ONLINE SCHOOL. The teachers were all ready to tackle this with a smile on their face. All the teachers tried their best to clear all the doubts after explaining the lesson, the teachers provided with notes of the lesson and assigned online homework, which was then to be submitted on Google classroom. The teachers are really giving time which is appreciable. Everything was explained very well and videos were also prepared by the school to help us parents to cope with this change. Life for the kids changed completely; from getting up early in the morning, waiting to get ready and go to school; have all the fun with their friends to now staying at home all the time. Our son always asks us, \"Mama and Daddu, when will school start, when will I get to play with my friends?\" and we have no answer to give him. Even with online classes, the school celebrated all the major events by including the kids in the events as well. They also have some competitions online which was very encouraging for the boys. As a parent, I have found the staff very friendly and approachable. I couldn’t think of a better school for my child to be in. It might be worth mentioning that his teachers are not only focused on teaching well, but also ensure that children communicate with the school team and we congratulate them for their hard work and dedication towards the students. “The roots of education are bitter but the fruit is sweet.‘’ - Mrs. Jennifer Fernandes Parent of Mast. Raphael (1A) ONLINE EDUCATION The Couid - 19 pandemic has gueatly affected various aspects of noumal life including going to office and school. As a result schools have shifted to online classes instead of traditional classes. Constantly conducting ontine classes is the only way out to keep imparting knowledge. It involves the use of digital service to create a virtual classuoonm. The teacher and students sign into a communicalion app and sit in front of their device. Our school has provided us with the Google meet app which helped us in this online education. The study materials in ontine education could be tests, audio, notes, videos and images. With the efforts of both the teacher and students, these online classes have proved to be successful. Experiencing online classes was totally new yet effective and successful. One of the important aspects of online learning is its inherent flexibility, howener there is a catch, one has to be eternally self-motivated. Online educalion enables us to learn from various mentors and teachers in different areas, increasing our knowledge and perspectives. It reduces nervousness among students as many are able to communicate more through online education than regular classes. Proper mangement was there for all the activities and assessments. - Parent & Mast. Mohammed Ayaan Chowdhary Sr. Kg. A
