RECOLLECTIONS a publication for members of the Bartow History Museum April . May . June 2023
FROM THE DIRECTOR01 Apr-Jun : 2023 Greetings! We’re just a few months into 2023, and it has already been a busy and fruitful year at the Bartow History Museum. Thank you to all of our members and visitors who have attended our programs, brought in friends and family, visited our temporary exhibit on the history of Allatoona Dam, shopped in our gift shop, and supported the museum so far this year. Did you know that Georgia Museums, Inc., which operates the Bartow History Museum along with the Booth, Tellus, and Savoy, was recently awarded a Governor’s Award for Arts and Humanities, recognizing organizations that make outstanding contributions to the civic or cultural vitality of the state? Melinda Lemmon, executive director of the Cartersville-Bartow County Department of Economic Development, stated in her nomination support letter, the museums “are a catalyst for Cartersville’s reputation as ‘Museum City.’ Their investments and leadership by example have encouraged collaboration that has elevated cultural arts of many types.” We are honored and humbled to be a part of an amazing organization and to be recognized for the work we love to do. We are also pleased to welcome visitors to our new office and research space. After several months of construction and moving, our offices and the Mulinix Research Center are now open in the TRC building at 1 North Gilmer Street. It’s a beautiful new space with plenty of parking and ample room for research. If you need to see a BHM staff member or want to take a look at some of our historic resources, stop by for a visit. We’ll also host an open house in the new space in June. Keep an eye out for details! Looking ahead to the next few months, we have a lineup of some great opportunities to learn more about quilting and handicrafts, the repatriation work at the Etowah Indian Mounds, local historical figures, and more. In addition to these lecture and camp offerings, we will open a new temporary exhibit this month called A Patchwork of Patterns: Quilts Across Time. This exhibit will feature quilts, quilted items, tools, and stories of local quilters from our collection at the museum. We look forward to seeing you soon at the Bartow History Museum! Trey Gaines
