FROM THE DIRECTOR02 Jul - Sept : 2023 The Rosetta Stone and the Mona Lisa have been two objects of history that have fascinated me since childhood, and earlier this year, I had the opportunity to see them both with visits to the British Museum and the Louvre. While we may not have objects in the Bartow History Museum that attract the kind of attention these two items do, a visit to your local history museum can be just as inspiring. Be sure to come to see our current temporary exhibit, A Patchwork of Patterns: Quilts Across Time, before it closes on September 2nd. This exhibit features 11 historic quilts from the museum’s collection, as well as other related and quilted items. With the variety of patterns, colors, uses, and stories, there’s sure to be a quilt that will intrigue you in some way. Then, in October, we will open our next temporary exhibit, called The Doctor Is In, featuring objects and stories illustrating some of Bartow’s medical history. Looking ahead to some of our programs, I hope you will join us at one of the upcoming lectures on the Trail of Tears, the Great Locomotive Chase, Gordy pottery, and more. Details on these programs can be found in this newsletter and on our website. Make plans, also, to participate in Nostalgia Game Night in August and to buy tickets to our annual cemetery tour in October. Also, in October, we’re bringing back Spooky Museum, a fun-filled, family-friendly Halloween experience. If you have the chance to visit a world-class European museum, do so. If that’s not on your summer itinerary (or, even if it is), come see us at the Bartow History Museum. I can guarantee our lines will be shorter! See you soon!
03 Jul - Sept : 2023 SPECIAL THANKS Special Thank You to Leslie Bronson who taught an embroidery workshop at the museum in June. Participants learned about the art and techniques of embroidery and finished the class with a new embroidered bag! Stay tuned for future workshops.
03 Jul - Sept : 2023 LOOKING BACK SPRING TIME SIPS In April, the Bartow History Museum hosted \"Cocktales: A Spring Thyme Evening.\" Guests were invited to the museum to sip on spring-inspired cocktails and plant fresh herbs for window boxes. Our friends at Southern Cove, who recently became certified Bourbon stewards, also put together a fascinating presentation on the history of Bourbon. Guests learned little-known facts about their favorite brands of spirits and some of the interesting laws that came out of Prohibition.
04 Jul - Sept : 2023 UNCOVERING THE PAST The archives was recently gifted a donation of two paintings by a local artist that has quite an interesting provenance. The artist was Miss Nellie Faye Parker, born in 1940 to parents Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Parker of Adairsville. Though Miss Parker was left mostly paralyzed following an early childhood disease, she was able to pursue her talent for art, with the support of her friends and family. Her great Aunt, Miss Ruby Teems, was the first to teach her to paint by holding the paint brush in her teeth. She began with paint-by-numbers, but quickly advanced to her own creations. In 1961, she had her first art exhibition in Cartersville. The painting of the covered wagon, shown here, was painted that same year. She painted in oils and watercolors, as well as designed stationery and Christmas cards, and painted ceramics. Also pictured is Miss Parker in 1968 on the day the Adairsville Lions Club presented her with her very own mobile art studio. Money and supplies were generously donated to make that happen. The Lions Club said Miss Parker was an example of those helped by the many members of the organization. Nellie Faye Parker passed away in 1970 from pneumonia at the age of 29. She is buried in Eastview Cemetery. The Artwork of Nellie Faye Parker – Sandy Moore Bartow History Museum Archives Assistant
