A) FROM THE HOD'S DESK BY DR. JACQUELINE BRIDGE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT Welcome to another edition of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering’s (DMME) Newsletter in which we summarise some of the major events that took place over the last six months. The Department is committed to providing continuing professional development opportunities for practising engineers. In February 2019, the Department hosted a workshop on “Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Principles” facilitated by Dr. Richard Palmer, an eminent practitioner in the discipline and the author of the “Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook”. Participants in the workshop explored ways of effective scheduling of activities through a series of case studies. This was the first in a series of four (4) workshops on engineering asset management. Other presenters included Professor Andrew Jardine, Dr. Greg Buscarello and Mr. Kishore Jhagroo. Maintaining high standards in our educational programmes is very important for the DMME. This newsletter highlights three events that assist in this: the visit of our external examiner, Professor Prasanta Dey in April 2019, the exit interviews with our students in May 2019 and the upcoming quality review visit in March/April 2020. To cap off this hectic period, the DMME staff and research students attended a retreat at the Leilani Estate in Maracas Valley on 25th June, 2019. In the morning, we revisited our vision and mission statements and began discussions on how to prioritise our efforts for the next two years. The day was completed with light-hearted games and social interaction. We know that the year ahead will be challenging as we seek to provide quality engineering education, advance technology and provide solutions for regional and global development within the limitations imposed by the campus’ financial constraints. But we are excited by our vision and if you wish to be part of this journey, we invite you (whether a former/current/ prospective student, industry partner or a member of the general public) to contact us at [email protected]. 1|Page MME Newsletter July 2019, Vol.5 Issue 2

Call for Contributions – A Text Entitled, “Sustainable Supply Chain Design and Operations for Small Island Nations” to be Published in 2020 Supply chains are critical links that connect an organisation’s inputs to its outputs. Supply chain management (SCM) is the major paradigm shift of today’s business. Traditional challenges have included lowering costs, ensuring just-in-time delivery, and shrinking transportation times to allow better reaction to business challenges. However, the increasing environmental costs of these networks and growing consumer pressure for eco-friendly products has led many organisations to look at supply chain sustainability as a new measure of profitable operations. 15 | P a g e MME Newsletter July 2019, Vol.5 Issue 2

There is no exception to island nations in the Caribbean and other regions of the globe. These island nations are striving for sustainable balanced growth and high-quality services. Their overall functionality and attractiveness would rely significantly upon sustainable supply chain design, operations and procurement, based on collective capabilities for efficient use of their resources. The book could be used to fill up the existing gaps between the classical textbook knowledge and the contemporary concepts /practices in SCM, and provide cases and examples of best sustainable supply chain design and operations for island nations. A “Call for Contributions” in terms of chapters, cases and articles for a book entitled: “Sustainable Supply Chain Design and Operations for Small Island Nations” to be published in 2020. Timelines for abstract submissions would be 2nd August 2019, and for full chapter be 31st December 2019. For enquiries, contact the Editors, Professor Kit Fai Pun (Email: [email protected]), and/or Professor Prasanta Kumar Dey (Email: [email protected]). A flyer of “Call for Contributions” for the text is attached (see Annex- 3). 3. The inaugural session of the re-structured programme ran from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and was split into three segments with a total of nine MPhil and PhD candidates from the Department presenting their research. Presentations by Academic Staff/Research Supervisors were interspersed to provide appropriate guidance and advice to students. In addition, students were able to engage in discussion with each other after presentations, between sessions and during lunch. The first session was targeted at (three) candidates who are at the close-out stage of their research that is, those who either recently submitted their PhD theses or in the final stages of their PhD research and preparing for submission. Mr. Robert Birch, Ms. Geeta Ramsoobhag, and Mr. Fahraz Ali presented in this segment. Their presentations focussed on characterisation of soil dynamics, condition monitoring aspects in the oil and gas industry and a multi-objective optimisation of the FDM process. Professor Pun gave constructive feedback on focussing the final oral presentation on the significant outcomes and their implications. This was followed by presentations from three candidates at the intermediate stage of their research that is, those who recently upgraded from MPhil to PhD or those preparing for upgrade/for submission of their MPhil. Mr. Arshad Mohammed (Improving tolerances in Additive Manufacturing), Mr. Ravi Babooram (Development of low-cost prosthetic devices) and Ms. Donna Ramkissoon (Development of a method to devaluate human factors risk in the design phase of a plant) presented in this session. Dr. Maharaj advised the students that at this phase they needed to pay close attention the choice of an appropriate research methodology. This allows the candidate to be aware of the limitations of the findings and to accurately understand the data that is presented. In the third session, the three candidates presented the conceptual frameworks for their impending research. Mr. Johnny Tiu discussed his intention to develop a hybrid method for understanding vibrations in complex structures; Mr. Hollee Roberts described how he intended to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness (productivity) of Trinidad's public secondary schools using a web-based geographical information systems (GIS) GIS and economical modelling principles, multinomial logit model and regression analysis while Mr. Josh Henry proposed the development of a multi-purpose bio-inspired robot. Dr. Bachoo spoke to graduate students about defining their research at the early stages. 19 | P a g e MME Newsletter July 2019, Vol.5 Issue 2

He focused primarily on the importance of the Literature Review. Apart from identifying the gaps, the other benefits include enhancing the student's writing style and identifying possible dead ends. He talked about the importance of developing an ‘Engineering Toolbox’ of skills to tackle problems quickly and efficiently. These range from: Programming Skills, Statistical Techniques, Mathematical Methods, and Database Skills etc. He ended by speaking about balancing research goals with available resources (equipment and otherwise), which is necessary to give the best chance for success. Over thirty persons attended the symposium. Feedback from the event was very positive; all the participants were satisfied with the event, with 18% saying that it exceeded their expectations. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are at the heart of a technological revolution which is transforming the way we live and the way we work. If Trinidad and Tobago is to be a key player of this transformation, we must be engaged in nurturing, developing and deploying STEM talent. Formulating viable STEM Education Policy and leading/facilitating its implementation in schools is a challenge that requires many stakeholders to work together. This Seminar has its theme of “STEM Education Policy and Implementation for Schools in Trinidad and Tobago”. It was sought to facilitate the nation- wide awareness and provide participants with the current thoughts and insights from different perspectives on formulating STEM Education Policy and implementation for schools in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). The Seminar programme was quite packed. There were three presentations in two sessions, followed by an open discussion forum. The guest speakers are of diverted background. They are holding positions like Curriculum Coordinator, Project/ Research Officer, and Vice Chair, from the Ministry of Education, NIHERST and a Professional Body, ASQ, respectively. They are expert of their respective areas related to STEM education and training. All invited speakers were asked to sharpen/streamline their respective presentations in 25 minutes. Individual presentations are highlighted as follows: 1. “STREAM Education: Roadmap for Implementation in the Education System” - Ms. Tricia Gilkes, Curriculum Coordinator (Ag), of Ministry of Education, T&T. The Speaker talked about STREAM Education utilizing six (6) specific disciplines namely Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. The presentation addressed the challenge to implement leaning activities that would help increase student engagement behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively, thereby positively affecting student learning and achievement. 22 | P a g e MME Newsletter July 2019, Vol.5 Issue 2

It was proposed that the implementation of a STREAM Education Programme could contribute and have been contributing to the solution for this challenge. Ms. Gilkes then introduced a roadmap advocated by the Ministry of Education to ensure that STREAM Education is embedded in the education system and by extension contribute to the development and implementation of a National STEM Policy for Trinidad and Tobago. 2. “STEMM for National Development and Sustainability: From Gap to Policy to Value Added” - Mr. Roashion Persadie, Vice Chair, The ASQ-LMC, T&T. The presenter shed insights on the contemporary issues of STEM and proposed the value of STEMM (where the second M is for Morality) as paramount to the future success and sustainable development of Trinidad and Tobago, He explained the importance of STEMM as relevant to STEM and included the non-STEM endeavours and activities. Mr. Persadie discussed issues of dominant and emerging culture, and their influences on strategic planning and execution, whilst acknowledging that the 4th Industrial Revolution has been redefining economies, jobs as well as individuals. 3. “How Can We Prepare Students for the 21st Century?” - Ms. Lovaan Superville, Senior Project/Research Officer, NIHERST’s Innovation and International Projects Units), T&T.
