Sun Safety There are some essential oils that can be phototoxic in sun exposure, mostly, but not limited to, citrus essential oils. Best practice is that if you are going to spend some time in the sun, you need to wash off the essential oils with mild soap and water, and then wait 12-18 hours before soaking up those UV rays. However, if you choose to use citrus EOs and spend time in the sun, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has safe maximum dilution ratios available for some of the citrus essential oils. Here are a couple, but this is by no means a complete list. Be sure to do your own due diligence before using citrus essential oils topically in prolonged sunlight. Lime Lemon Max Dilution 0.7% Max Dilution 2% No more than 1-2 drops in a 10ml roller No more than 6 drops in a 10ml roller bottle with carrier oil bottle with carrier oil It is also important that you know whether your essential oils are cold-pressed or steam distilled. Steam distilled essential oils do not have the phototoxicity causing constituents present in them [1] . If in doubt, use extreme caution, and make sure the area of skin that was exposed to potentially phototoxic essential oils is covered or do not use these essential oils topically. Outdoor Skin & Surface Wipes Kid Friendly 2+ years Items & Ingredients needed: 2.5qt airtight container empty wipes container works really well! 1 new roll of paper towels 4oz Organic Fractionated Coconut Oil 14 drops Citronella 14 drops Geranium 13 drops Patchouli 13 drops Tea Tree 10 drops Vitamin E oil Steps to Take: Pull perforated paper towels apart into individual pieces. Fold them in half, and place them interlocking (like how the wipes in the container were) so that when you pull one out for use, the next one pops up. Place paper towels into the container. If you have to squish them down a bit to fit, that is okay. In a separate bowl, add the carrier oils, vitamin E, and essential oils. Mix well and then immediately pour your mixture over the paper towels. Close the lid and shake container well to disperse oils. Use as you would any other wipes. Bug Off Lotion Bars Kid Friendly 2+ years Items & Ingredients needed: 2oz Organic Shea Butter 2oz solid Organic Coconut Oil 2oz Beeswax Pellets 25 drops Tea Tree 25 drops Geranium 25 drops Patchouli 25 drops Citronella 10 drops Vitamin E oil Empty 2oz Deodorant Tubes (round or oval) Steps to Take: Place the Shea Butter, solid Coconut Oil, and Beeswax Pellets into a glass bowl. Use a double boiler to melt the ingredients completely. Remove from heat and incorporate in the 100 drops of essential oil & 10 drops Vitamin E oil, mixing well. Pour into empty deodorant tubes.
