Everyone counts. Everyone matters. As we enter a new decade, we have an opportunity to fully realize who we are as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people.Will we allow this decade to define us, or will we define this decade? We can define the decade by recognizing it’s an election year.As we have faced relentless attacks on the LGBTQ+ community from the White House all the way to the local level, the discrimination and hate seems to be exacerbated by those who should be protecting us.Voting starts at the local and state level. Every vote counts and we define who represents us. We have enormous challenges to face in the year ahead. Partisan beliefs aside, our efforts should be focused on getting out the vote and electing pro-equality representatives who will continue to move progress forward for ALL of us. This may feel like the sermon that preaches to the choir, but an alarming 1 in 5 LGBTQ+ adults are not registered to vote.While this number seems high, it is not surprising as voter suppression has always targeted voters of color, which includes many LGBTQ+ Americans.Worse, voter identification laws in many states require a person’s ID match their birth-assigned gender, which is an unnecessary challenge preventing a transgender person from casting their ballot. Ten years ago marked the first time in history same-sex households were counted in the census.This year, it is more crucial than ever that ALL of us are counted, which is why Compass is partnering with the US Census Bureau.

Julie Seaver CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Overcounting the privileged and undercounting the marginalized reinforces systems of power and oppression in this country.We all need to be counted so our communities can get access to federal funds for programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and public housing, and most importantly - have sufficient visibility and representation in all levels of government to enforce our civil rights. And nothing will make us more visible, and more powerful, than the unity of our community.A parent (now an ally) of one of our youngest trans youth had reminded me,“all of this- is about all of us.” Rights for one, strengthen the case for rights for all. While amazing strides have been made for LGBTQ+ rights-marriage equality among them-there’s still much more to do. Forty percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+ and transgender people, especially trans women of color, face enormously disproportionate violence in comparison to the rest of the LGBTQ+ community. So when you are enjoying the festivities at Pride, take a moment to honor how far we’ve come, and another to respect and contribute to the work we still have to do.Those of us who are visible have to show up for those of us who can’t be, and raise our voices to lift them up with us. Our strength is in our unity, and our unity is in our community.
