Proud Together. It’s time to stand together united, lift each other up and help raise a generation who know, deep in their bones, that their worth is rooted in who they are. Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone knew our value, our right to belong, and to never have to hustle for our worthiness? The story of Pride starts by remembering the first Pride was a protest led by trans women of color. Those women fought against the oppression, the silencing and diminishing of their truth. The legendary Laverne Cox once said, “it’s important for us to understand our histories, so that we don’t repeat the things that are problematic. And when we can understand the story, own the story, then we can begin to write a different ending.” How we show up in the world, for ourselves and for others, requires sharing the story and honoring the legacy of pride to be one of unapologetic and bold self-celebration. 30 years of Pride here in Palm Beach County is truly a collection of stories of the people who refused to erase parts of themselves or give their power away. Pride is a time of year when we proclaim to ourselves, and the rest of the world, that we deserve to be just who we are. Progress takes work, and while it’s important to acknowledge that things have gotten better, there are people who are still afraid to be themselves . . . and rightfully so. With the anti-LGBTQ legislation that continues to pour from our state’s capital, it’s important to recognize the evolution and the impact of allyship.

Julie Seaver CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Do we all have equal access to affirming healthcare? Can transgender kids just use the school bathroom that’s right for them? How will you show up for others when they’re not in the room? Can we please just pass the Equality Act already?! It takes a lot of courage to show up, mask off, in the world—to speak and live our truth. It requires that we be vulnerable. It requires that we do the internal work that leads to self-understanding. The journey to authentic living can be an uncomfortable one, but it’s such a worthy, and necessary, endeavor. Until we achieve full equality for all and, in spite of the work we still have yet to do, can we all hope to be our true selves? I say to the community and the Class of 2022, yes we absolutely can. But instead of hope, maybe we should expect: Expect your achievements will affect and inspire others. Expect your failures will bring you closer to your success. Expect your journey of learning will be both exciting and challenging. Expect to lead from a place of empathy, accountability and learning, and you will achieve happiness and satisfaction in the person you become. Expect the people in this space will always see your light, and will believe in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. Expect no matter how small or insignificant you may be feeling at times—living your authentic life will undoubtedly save someone else’s.
