1699 50 YEARS OF PRIDE This is a historic moment for the LGBTQ community. Fifty years ago, a small group of individuals banded together and decided to change the world. Perhaps that’s not how they thought of it, but that’s what happened. On a summer night in June of 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City.The raid sparked a riot, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes between bar patrons, residents and law enforcement. In what became known as the Stonewall Riots, these moments served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. One year later, the LGBTQ community took to the streets again to commemorate that occasion-the first Pride parade of its kind. Our movement started with a moment; many moments created separately and then coming together into our story. We’re all living a great story whether we know it or not. For thousands of years, entire religions, cultures and communities have been built on a foundation of storytelling. Being a part of something bigger, as we continue to honor our heritage and pride, relies on telling our story. Last year, with the expertise and collaboration of Palm Beach Dramaworks, Compass embarked on an emotional journey with our youth to capture the stories of our LGBTQ elders; the true pioneers and trailblazers of our history. Through their stories, the Legacy Project was born, and inspired us all to continue documenting our history - the stories we will never read about in books and students will never learn in our schools. We knew these great stories would allow for change as both the storytellers, and the audience, allowed themselves to transform their learned thoughts and ideas about their sense of self and the world around them.

Old and young, LGBTQ and allied - are you ready to make history with us? Though South Florida may be miles away from World Pride being hosted in New York this June, we are proud to launch this half-century, world-wide milestone right here with all of you. This year at Pride and in our everyday lives, we join with celebrations across the globe to honor that heritage of pride and the millions of moments that continue our story and the modern fight for LGBTQ equality.
