Somerset Parent Carer Forum One of the things that Parents continually tell us or ask advice about is when they are out and about and how can we make it easier for them to access things. We have listened. We are proud to introduce you to Ollie the Flamingo, the new logo for autism awareness in Somerset. Businesses who have signed up to the Ollie Flamingo Project already have agreed to make small reasonable adjustments, to make it easier for families to access their premises. For more information on this project visit: www.somersetparentcarerforum.org.uk The business pack includes a sticker for the shop / door window, a staff room poster, informing you simple ways of making small changes in your environment, that can make a huge difference to families and a booklet explaining the project and how it came about. Do you know of a business who would like a pack or to learn more? If so, please contact us, it’s free and easy to do! We have also got an Information Booklet for families, with an Ollie the Flamingo wallet where you can discreetly give instructions of how they can support you. If you would like one, please contact us! The Carers Card The Carers Card is a something we hope you will never need to use, but it’s peace of mind if you do need it. The card comes with a sticker for your windscreen, a card which you can place in your purse / wallet or even the glove box in your car and a handy shopping trolley token that can be added to your keys. Emergency services will know who to contact in case of an emergency, should you need it, but they will also be aware of the person that you care for. To purchase the Carers Card pack at £2.50, please email us: [email protected]

Holidays and Respite Activities in Somerset We are a family business based in Somerset and Devon. We have a farm in Panborough, near Glastonbury where we offer fully supported holidays and respite activities children and young people with learning disabilities. Our all-inclusive themed holiday packages often consist of staying at the farm with trips and meals out using our Holiday Bus. The farm has luxury themed bedrooms, lake views and resident horses. We offer beach holidays, Christmas holidays and fully supported holidays abroad to locations such as Disneyland Paris, Spain and Italy. Often parents and carers use our holidays as an alternative to respite, as the experience feels more like a holiday and lots of fun. Some prefer their break being catered and planned for them with a hotel feel, rather than staying at someone else’s home or at a respite centre. • Our staff are very experienced and friendly with many skills and high quality, person centred care and support • We are a CQC registered company and have outstanding reviews from all customers, carers and parents We now also offer a Children and Young People’s Holiday Club for ages 8 – 18 • Activities run during school holidays with full day timetables • The clubs are fully supported, and most needs can be met. We have a very experienced team and can offer pickups and drop-offs in Somerset using our Holiday buses. • Activities at the Farm range from arts & crafts, woodwork, painting, planting, life skills, disco’s and karaoke, movement and drama, storytelling and much more. We also do trips to the zoo’s, beaches, theme parks, nature walks, museums, activity centres and the list goes on. Shared Earth Learning Shared Earth Learning began as a venture between two women who were so passionate about nature it became their life's work to connect people with it so Shared Earth Learning Forest School cooperative (SELco) was created. SELco has been running year-round sessions for all ages since 2010 and have been supported by the Short Breaks programme to run holiday sessions for a few years; days which typically involve child-led, hands-on nature inspired activities like planting, harvesting and cooking, camp fires, stories, games, natural crafts and just 'being' outdoors. Carers are welcome at no charge and siblings can come too. Sadly, it's not great for wheelchair users, but not impossible. To find out more visit our blogsite: www.sharedearthlearning.blogspot.com/ or better still meet Alex & Alyson from SELco at the Short Breaks Family Fun day in July. Nova Sports and Coaching provides a HUGE range of sports and activities specifically for children with disabilities/ additional needs. Race Running • Powerchair Football • Wheelchair Basketball • Skiing • Multi-sports! Coaches are fully qualified and have comprehensive experience with disabilities including autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, GDD, Down's Syndrome and more. We have fun at ALL our sessions and children always leave smiling! Alex & Jenny Directors - Nova Sports & Coaching Tel: 07805 813840 www.novasportsandcoaching.co.uk

Joey writes his own songs! The Unstoppables forum is a group of young people with special educational needs and or disabilities who meet every month to have their voice heard and help to make changes in Somerset. They recently had a ‘Superhero themed session’ and talked about how their addi- tional needs can challenge them. They created a Barrier Wall to showcase these and want to now share with other children and young people, to look at how to over- come some of these throughout the year. !\"#$%&&'()*#+,'--.*-+/'))+ 8',!43!6(($(#4*G! Spotlight on Youth Work in Somerset I met up with Chiara Docherty a Youth & Community Team Leader Mendip East at Mendip YMCA who works in the Frome, Coleford and Shepton Mallet areas of Somerset......we talked about all of the projects and work she is involved in the local community which spans far wider than running regular youth groups.....read on to find out more...... • Running youth club open days to recruit new club members, inviting the whole community to come and find out more about what goes on at the local youth club building and encouraging local young people to go along to a regular group session • Partnership working on larger projects - such as The Frome Children's Festival, encouraging children, young people and families to join in the fun activities on offer • Community projects - reaching out to local young people and finding out what they would like to do as a mini project in their neighbourhood - examples of great projects have been around skate parks, sheltered areas in the community, litter picks and much more • Working closely with the local Police, Town and Parish Councils, walking the streets to meet local residents • Providing extra support outside of the youth work to help young people at school, signposting to the support they need and being that role model and regular person to check in with This will be a regular feature in our newsletter, to continue to showcase the work in the community which needs to be shouted about. If you would like to find out about youth groups in your local area visit https://www.mendipymca.org.uk/what-we-do/youth-community- work/ Laura White – Short Breaks Development Officer, Somerset County Council

Avon and Somerset Safe Places Scheme Safe Places is a service to help vulnerable people with communication difficulties stay safe when they are out and about. The service includes direct access to police support 24 hours a day via the Safe Places telephone number. When someone joins Safe Places, they are given a unique reference number which gives them direct access to police support 24 hours a day, via the Safe Places telephone number, which has a direct link into the police control room. An individual can call the Safe Places number if they find themselves in a crisis situation, such as if they are lost, feel scared or upset, and don’t know what to do, or if they have been a victim of crime. They can also visit a Safe Places building for help. All police stations with enquiry offices are Safe Places and in the near future some council offices will also be included. Safe Places buildings can be identified by the Safe Places window sticker. Find your nearest Police Station here: www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact-us/police-stations/ Who can join Safe Places? The Safe Places service has no age limit and is open to anyone who resides or frequents the Avon and Somerset force area, with communication difficulties such as dementia or a learning disability. Visit: https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/forms/rsp to complete the online registration form or visit your local police station. RAINBOW Touch Therapy and Relaxation Hello, my name is Niki of Rainbow Therapies, I trained as a massage therapist and aromatherapist 24 years ago and I love sharing my massage therapy with grown-ups and children, guided by them as to what they need from that experience. There are lots of activities I can offer like guided story meditation and kids’ yoga that ignite minds, imagination, body and movement so every young person can gain confidence and shine in their own unique way. I also share my skills through story massage using 10 massage movements that can be done on the head and body (no clothing items are removed), I also practice Indian Head Massage & Aromatherapy Massage.
