The greatest use of life is to spend it forsomething that will outlast you. - William James

Bill’s Notes BILL GARDINERAs we get into the summer months and our busiest season, I have some notes on attitude and customer service to share. As the quote goes, “Customer Service is not a department, it is an attitude.” There are a few simple truths to great customer service. It starts with: Clients don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. They want us to go the extra mile and feellike we’ll be their “Yes” person. Living that attitude is a lot of what has allowed GARDINER to grow to what we are today.Great customer service can also be very simple. On page 9 of this issue of the GARDINER CONNECT, you’ll see how you can makeClients feel appreciated in 10 words or fewer.. and some great examples of what customers are saying about the work you’re all doing. We have to continue to do all of these things well as we continue to grow our business.Speaking of growing, have you ever stopped to think about the qualities and characteristics that make people successful? Recently, anOlympic gold medal winner outlined four key characteristics that have helped her along the way:1. Discipline. You don’t become the best in life or sports without discipline. Push yourself every day.2. Punctuality. The value of time and goal setting helps you to accomplish in a limited amount of time.3. Do it right the first time. Don't do things halfway, go full out. Don’t cut corners and strive to do it right the first time.4. Believe in yourself. “But when I decided to do something, I do it because I believe in it.”“We should all think about the impact mentors have had on our lives and ask what we can do to provide the same support to the nextgeneration.”In summation, how’s this for a great commentary?“The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast you.” - William JamesFinally, congratulations to all GARDINER Associates for our 7th Consecutive Top Workplace Award. As our Advisor and former TranePresident Jim Schultz commented, “Outstanding accomplishment.--well earned and deserved--an outstanding team.”Sincere thanks to each of you for making this a great place to work and a great company for our Clients to do business with. And inthe process, let’s have a great second half of 2016! 2

CLIENTFOCUS “ Customer Service Matters It can be argued that customer service is the most important part of a business. Customer service, by definition, is about serving people; it should be genuine, personalized, and compassionate — or, simply put, human. For most organizations, customer service is an afterthought. And since servicing customers is primarily viewed as a cost center, Clients are often treated as a liability. Yet, Clients are a valuable resource: their feedback is integral to shaping your product and building your brand. They are not shy about sharing their experiences — good and bad — to the world. We as a company, rely on word of mouth as one of our primary ways of advertising both our brand and service within our marketplace. Therefore, it is extremely important for each of us to remember that we have the ability to alter our Client's perception of GARDINER in a positive and negative way. You may have heard the saying, “Customer Service is not a department, it is an attitude.\" If we don’t recognize the value of our customers, they may leave. If we treat them with compassion and respect, we can inspire their loyalty. Our Clients are the reason our company exists: serving and retaining them is essential. Below you will find some basic simple truths of customer service and ways to make Clients feel appreciated. 10 words I apologize for our mistake, let me make it right. 9 words Thank you for your business, please come back again. 8 words I’m not sure, but I’ll find out. 7 words What else can I do for you? 6 words What is most convenient for you? 5 words How may I serve you? 4 words How did we do? 3 words Glad you’re here. 2 words Thank you. 1 word Yes. All in all, Clients don’t care how much we know until they know how much we care. They want us to go the extra mile and be a “Yes person.\" We have to continue to do all of these things well as we grow our business. On the following page you will find Client feedback we have received through CVAP meetings from the first quarter of the year.9
